Seaway’s Senior Spartans at OFSSA Volleyball

Canada Golf Club took a big step forward on Sunday, July 15 when they hosted and won Division J of the Ottawa Valley Golf Association’s Intersectional match play tournament.

The 10 member team (plus two spares) collected 40 points to narrowly edge out the Canadian Golf and Country Club who settled for second place with 38 points. Royal Papineau was third with 23 points, and the Copperdale Golf Club at Woodlawn, Ontario was fourth at 19 points.

For their first place finish, the Upper Canada golfers will move up to compete at level I next season and Copperdale will drop down to level K.

Winning top spot in the A division this year was the Ottawa Hunt Club. The Hunt Club edged out Rivermead by a single point (42 to 41) for the win and the title of the top Intersectional Team in the Ottawa Valley which includes 80 member clubs in the geographical area from Deep River east to Thurso, Quebec, south to Alexandria and west to Brockville.

Other local results saw Prescott win level C with 43 points to the Royal Ottawa’s 39. Prescott will  move up to play at level B next year.

Cedar Glen, Williamsburg golfers played in the I division where they will play again next year with their third place finish. Hammond won level I with 42 points and moves up. Metcalfe was second at 30 and DVB Petawawa finished in fourth and will drop down to level J.

Their spot at level I will be filled by Upper Canada.

At level L Eagle Creek and Iroquois finished tied for 27 points and Poplar Grove was third.

At level O Morrisburg finished second behind Falcon Ridge.

Although South Dundas Soccer Association chair Phillip Blancher would like to see better communication  between the municipality and volunteers running various programs it appears that an issue between the municipality and the association has come to an amiable solution.

The municipality of South Dundas had dropped the ball, the soccer ball to be exact, and Blancher didn’t feel it should be the Association that served the penalty that came with a price tag of about $450.

In a letter dated March 5, to South Dundas Public Works Manager, Chris Bazinet, the Association made its annual request for the closure of Lakeview Drive in Iroquois, between College and Elizabeth Streets for the Saturday soccer mornings, beginning May 24 and running through July 25.

In a return e-mail dated Friday, April 11, Bazinet replies: “I am in receipt of your request road closures/parking restrictions in support of South Dundas Soccer Activities. The Municipality will require proof of Liability Insurance in the amount of 5 Million dollars with the Municipality identified as an addition to the policy. Once we receive this document we will proceed with your request.”

In year’s past, the liability amount was $2 million and so the increased amount came as a surprise to the soccer association. It also came with a cost of $450 more for the coverage.

“Our registrations are done,” Blancher told The Leader after the April 11 reply. “If this is a requirement then fine, it’s a requirement, but you have to let people know ahead of time. There was nothing anywhere that I can find that announced this change. The letter was a standard thing we do every year. And our request to close the road is for the safety of the kids, that is why we do it.”

“We purposely budget things down to the wire to keep this program as low cost to the community as possible,” says Blancher. “That is why we are one of the largest programs in the community. We provide a good, length of time program at a low cost.”

Blancher questioned what became of “all of the talk of cutting red tape and making things easier for volunteers working in the community. Last minute changes like this are counter-productive. Ever since we asked that the road be closed it’s been $2 million. The closure saves the municipality, otherwise they would have 400 kids and parents running across the road. It’s done for safety, and it’s done to lower liability.”

“I’m not complaining about the $5 million, but I am complaining about the total lack of communication in this municipality.”

Blancher says the Association is not in bad shape financially, but the money to pay for this unexpected cost will have to be found somewhere. “Registrations are done. Our supplies are ordered, our shirts are ordered, and we are just over a month away from starting.”

Since the soccer association paid the $450 insurance increase to obtain $5 million liability coverage, Blancher has been contacted by Bazinet who has asked for the financial impact the increase will have on the association. In an e-mail dated April 23, he wrote, “I can tell you that any liabilities related to Road Authorities has been moving towards the $5 million mark and our broker has advised us the same. We may be able to do something for this year given the timing of the request.”

And so with everyone apparently back on the same page and working together…it’s game on.

MORRISBURG–The visiting Athens Aeros collected a goal from J.P. Augustine at 9:56 of the third period that broke a 3-3 tie and turned out to be the decider as the Lions lost to the Aeros, 5-3, on home ice Saturday night.

The Aeros managed their fifth and final goal of the game in the last minute of play in the empty Lions net, as Lions head coach Mark Evans, elected to go with the extra attacker in a effort to tie the match and force overtime.

The Lions were first on the scoreboard in Saturday night’s game, as they went up 1-0 at 6:15 of the first period on a Christian Leger goal assisted by Andrew Jarvis and Eric Evans.

It would be the first of four power-play goals, two by each team, to be scored in the game that saw 49 minutes in penalties assessed in 15 offenses. 

The visiting Aeros were assessed just four minor penalties, while the Lions sat out eight minors, a five minute head contact major and two game misconducts.

The Aeros came charging back in the second period. 

At 3:38, Liam Widdowfield beat Lions goaltender John Gilmer to tie the game and at 12:53 Drew Powell (power play) gave them a 3-2 lead.

Before the period ended however, Leger again would be heard from, on the Lions power play, this time assisted by Dallas Blacksmith and Taylor Eamon.

A flurry of goals got started in the third period, three counted in just over two minutes.

At 7:34 of the third  period, the Aeros gained the advantage with a Damian Levesque goal, but again the Lions charged back, this time with Liam Morrow counting at 8:48 with help from Peter Ketcheson and Blacksmith.

Then at 9:56, Augustine connected for what would turn out to be the winner.

Liam Widdowfield put the puck in the empty Lions net at 19:39 to ice the cake.

In other league action, it was a strange one for the St. Lawrence Division’s first place Casselman Vikings who hold the spot with 38 points, eight up on the Winchester Hawks.

The Vikings got it rolling on home ice on Thursday, Nov. 21 with a big 9-1 win over the Hawks, but then lost their first game of the season on Friday night, Nov. 22 to Gananoque.  Then on Sunday they were nabbed for a 7-6 overtime win by the Akwesasne Wolves.

The Char-Lan Rebels are in the division’s third spot with 27 points, while Akwesasne holds fourth place with 21 and the Alexandrian Glens are right on their heels with 19.

The Lions have just five points.

Coming up this week, the Lions are on the road to play Prescott on Saturday night, November 30. Then on Sunday, December 1, they host Alexandria. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
