Good results for Morrisburg skaters at Interclub

“There were  63 teams taking part at the 2015 EOSSA track and field competition held at Thousand Islands Secondary School in Brockville May 21-22,” said track coach, Mark Lewis. “Seaway ended up 14th in the team standings. We sent just 13 participants. For that many athletes to go to EOSSA and do so well is really impressive.”

The Seaway team numbers may be small, but there is little doubt that they are ‘mighty’. The results of the two days of competition tell the story.

David Swerdfeger took first in the Men’s 300 Meter Hurdles Midget,  (43.78), first in Men’s Triple Jump Midget (12.05m) and fifth in Men’s Long Jump Midget.

“David had another great day. He won the hurdles Thursday night by 30 meters or 3 seconds, which is a lot,” said Lewis. 

“He won the triple jump very, very convincingly with a jump of 12.05 m. And he was one centimeter off his personal best in the long jump. He simply had a really big day out there.”

Maggie Wells had outstanding results in her events. She placed second in Shot Put Junior (11.22 m), and third in discus throw junior (30.55m). 

Grant Wells qualified in 1500 Meter Midget (4:36:68) and 3000 Meter Midget (10:00:39). “Grant ran his personal best in both those events,” said Lewis. 

One surprise for coaches Lewis and Lindsay Waddell (described as a “track coach extraordinaire” by Lewis) was Sid Sideratos’ showing in Men’s Shot Put Midget. He placed second with 12.61m. 

“Sid actually posted a personal best of a half meter,” said Mark Lewis.

Julenea Barnhartd placed fourth in Women’s Long Jump Midget (4.42m) while Jaycie Maville came 6th in Women’s Shot Put Midget (9.6m).

Kaitlyn Stewart was 5th in Women’s Long Jump Junior  (4.55m) and third in Women’s Triple Jump Junior (10.24m)

Cassie Hummel placed third in Women’s Javelin Throw Junior (25.48m).

“I was really impressed with how these kids competed,” said Lewis. “They had a competitive mind set, they focussed on technique and they went out there and did what they had to do. We had these great results up and down the board.”

Seaway is sending eight athletes to the eastern Regionals May 28-29, also at TISS. 

If they are successful, four could move on to OFSSA competition: the stakes for Seaway are high.

“We have some kids who I feel have a good shot,” said coach Lewis. “Our kids are young and they listen. They are focussed on technique and on race strategy, and they go out there and get the job done. They’ve ‘overcome’ a lot of coaching this year,” he added laughing.

The South Dundas Soccer season got underway on Saturday with just over 400 soccer kids taking to the fields.

This year’s program is offering action in five age categories with eight teams in each of the U-6, U-8 and U-10 categories, six teams in the U-13 and four teams in the U-18.

Our numbers are about the same as last year, says association president Phillip Blancher. 

“We have just over 70 coaches and 20 volunteers who are helping with the canteen and field maintenance. We opened on a beautiful morning, and had a great turnout and we are looking forward to a really good season.”

Although the canteen was open Saturday, it was not at full capacity. Thanks to two volunteers who have come forward to run it there will be expanded items available this Saturday, and “definitely some coffee”, says Blancher with a chuckle.

The association is pleased with the answer to the call  that went out early this spring for more volunteers, but Blancher says a few more are still needed to help with field maintenance and the end of the year tournament in July (both for organizing and implementation of both the Friday night parade of nations and the Saturday soccer.)

The 2014 program got rolling Saturday with few changes with the exception of the teams at the higher age levels. 

The U-12 was increased by one year to U13 to allow enough kids 14 to 18 years to make up a U-18, four-team division.

With this change a time adjustment was also made allowing for 90 minutes, 30 minutes for skills work and full 60 minutes for games with referees.

“We cut one team out, but we’ve enhanced the experience for the older kids,” says Blancher. “We got a lot of positive responses from this and also acquired a few new sign ups because of it.”

Blancher says the Association is absolutely delighted with the number of sponsors this year which include from Morrisburg: Tim Hortons, Home Hardware, Giant Tiger, Riley’s Valu-mart (sponsoring both sweaters and canteen), The Building Centre and Sports Fix; from Iroquois W.O. Stinson.

“Thanks to our sponsors, we are able to keep the costs down and our registration fees at $40,” says Blancher.

Led by a shut out performance from Braydon Lalonde-Thompson, the South Dundas Novice C1 Lions wrapped up their four point series against the North Dundas #1 Devils with a 5-0 win here, Sunday afternoon.

The four point series opened in Morrisburg, last Wednesday, February 5, when the Demons scored an upset 2-1 victory over the regular season first place Lions, and then continued in Chesterville on Thursday, February 6, with the Lions evening it at two points apiece with a 3-1 win.

That set the stage for Sunday’s game that saw the Lions take charge early with three first period goals.

James Martens led the Lions attack with three goals and one assist, and Devon Honders and Zack Scarbeau added singles. Jack Croteau and Honders picked up single assists.

The Lions now move onto their second playoff round, also a four point series. They will meet the South Dundas Novice C2 Lions in round two, but the game schedule was not available at press time.

Last Wednesday, February 5, the C1 Lions were surprised by the Demons who swept into town to claim a 2-1 upset victory.

After a scoreless first period, Paul Hyndman put the Demons up 1-0 late in the second period.

Then, early in the third period, Nole Thompson made it 2-0, with help from Chloe Sharpley.

That was it for the Demons, but that was all they needed. 

Martens struck for the Lions lone goal late in the third period, too little too late.

The Demons again challenged in game two played in Chesterville on Thursday, February 6.

Although the Demons held the Lions to a 2-1 first period lead, a Martens goal in the second period put it out of reach.

Martens opened the Lions scoring with an unassisted goal nine minutes into the first period. Then at 12:46 of the frame, Devon Honders counted, from Emerson McMillan and Zack Scarbeau, for the 2-0 Lions advantage.

Nathan Thompson scored the lone Demons goals against Lions goaltender Braydon Lalonde-Thompson to close the gap to 2-1, but the Lions held on, and Martens second goal cemented their win.

Coming up this weekend, the Novice C1 Lions are in a tournament in Cardinal.
