The “Terrdale Farms” South Dundas Atom B Rep Lions closed out their regular season with a convincing 6-0 win over the Akwesasne Wolves here on Saturday, February 13, to take fifth place in the east division and advance to their first four-point playoff round against fourth place NGS
The Lions struck first on the backhand of Cam Shaver with the helper going to Cooper McCooeye, and closed out the first period with a couple of late goals to go up 3-0.
The first was compliments of the “CCM” line as the ‘hot handed” Nick Connors hammered home a rebound, with brother Sam grabbing the assist.
The last goal of the opening period came off the stick of Monty Dejong who pounced on a loose puck in the slot and quickly shot it past Keegan Delormier, assisted by Shaver.
The “CCM” line was flying again in the second as Sam Connors’ constant motion drew a Wolves tripping penalty.
Connors made them pay late in the power play when he went upstairs after taking a pass from McCooeye to make it 4-0.
The Lions drew another Wolves penalty shortly after at 6:04.
This time it was goaltender Quade Mullin’s turn to shine as he stopped a Wolves forward on a shorthanded breakaway to maintain the four-goal lead.
The Lions defence pairing almost scored a beauty midway into the third when Alek Larocque made a D to D pass with Ben Radley.
Radley took two strides and released a hard shot from the point that Delormier had to make a nice save on.
Shaver broke loose on a rush and fought off a Wolves defender to slip the puck past the Wolves tender with 6:12 left on the clock and Nick Connors capped off the scoring in the last minute of play to make the final 6-0. Dejong picked up the lone assist.
There were several choices for the “Game Champ” in this one.
McCooeye’s slick passing, Kloe Lewis’ forechecking, or Larocque’s decision making.
The nod went to the five man defensive unit (Larocque, Radley, Terrence Mudde, Devon Honders, Austin Roy) and goalie Quade Mullin for blanking the Wolves.
The Lions went penalty free in this one, helping them capture the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League’s Sportsmanship Award.
The fifth place Lions will open the playoffs Tuesday, February 16th in Finch against the NGS Braves. They will return home for game two on Saturday, February 20 at 11:30 a.m.
The season series between the two was a close one. The Lions had a 3-2 victory at home before dropping the next two contests in Finch by scores of 5-3 and 4-3. The two haven’t faced each other since mid November.
The first place Char-Lan Rebels have a first round bye, while second place South Stormont plays seventh place North Dundas. Cornwall (third place) and Akwesasne (6th place) will meet in a third series.
