The South Dundas “Signature Homestyles” Novice B Lions continued their hot streak last week racking up two more wins to move into first place in the East Division. 

The Lions, who jumped over Brockville #2 and South Grenville in standings, won both their games with a 4-3 win over Kemptville #2 and 7-0 win over Athens.

On Sunday afternoon in Athens, the Lions jumped on the Aeros and controlled the play and game earning Brendan Shaver his first shut-out of the season. Although he wasn’t busy in the Lions pipes, Shaver made a couple of big saves to preserve the shut-out.

Ben Lapier led the Lions offensively with four goals. 

He started things off in the first period when he picked up a pass from Spencer Barclay and broke in on the Aeros goalie who made the save on his first shot. Lapier then tapped home the rebound.

Kayne McCadden scored on a Kolby Latulippe rebound as the right winger moved the puck up the side boards and got a shot on net. McCadden was there to shoot the rebound home and Nolan Henry picked up the secondary assist.

Lapier scored again in the second when Trent Rae was able to keep the puck alive at the blue line, where Owen Fetterly set in up by burying his backhand shot. 

Joshua Broad gave the Lions a 4-0 late in the second scoring into a wide open when Lapier’s shot was stopped. Broad, wide open in the crease, to scored his seventh of the year.

In the third, Latulippe scored and Ben Lapier netted another two for a the 7-0 Lions win. 

Cassidy Bilmer and McCadden picked up assists on Latulippe’s goals, while Owen Fetterly and Joshua Broad picked up two assists each on Lapier’s goals.

Wednesday night in Kemptville, the Lions held on to a 4-3 lead as the Panthers pressed for a tie late in the game.

The Lion’s built a 4-1 lead heading into the third period but two third period goals by the Panthers turned it into a nail bitter. 

Shaver was sharp in the Lion’s net as he stopped several Panther break aways, while Emytt Fetterly, on defense, kept the Panthers on the outside to eliminate scoring chances.

Ben Lapier opened the scoring on a broken play when Trent Rae iced the puck and the Panther goalie stopped it near the crease but did not get the whistle. When he went to play it away, Ben Lapier was standing right there to knock it in.

Kayne McCadden gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage, when he took the puck off a face-off at the blue line and weaved around two Panther defenders before scoring. 

The Panthers made it 2-, but Ben Lapier restored the two goal lead in the second during a Panther line change. Lapier took advantage of the line change to burst through the middle of the ice, earn a breakaway and score on a shot to the glove side.

Owen Fetterly rounded out the Lions scoring from Broad and Lapier who dug the puck out from along the left wing boards and found a wide open Fetterly in the slot.

The ladies took over the Morrisburg Curling Club last Tuesday for the annual Women’s Invitational Bonspiel. The early draw saw the Russell squad, led by Sharon Courneyea, victorious, with Candy Alexander’s Prescott foursome second. In the late draw Alexandria, skipped by Andrea Lauzon, took both of their games, to win out by a single point over a Morrisburg team, who filled in on short notice. Greta McGann, Betty Locke, Sonja and  Rosemary Laurin, played well and won both matches, against Lancaster and Cornwall. 

The winners will have their names inscribed on the champions’ plaque.

Organizer Alice Thompson thanked the many volunteers who helped make the day a success, as well as the ladies who provided a delicious lunch. 

The club and the bonspiel earned appreciative words from the curlers, who hope to be invited to next year’s bonspiel. Special thanks to Wally Baker, who made sure the ice was at its best for the visitors.

Sid Morrell, Raymond Benoit, Jack Barkley and Bill Magee were in Metcalfe for a senior men’s bonspiel. They lost their first match to a very strong team from Rideau, but won their second against a Metcalfe foursome.

A senior mixed team travelled to Carleton Place for a 2-2-2 bonspiel on Thursday. Jack Barkley, Ruth Kelly, Fred “Boomer” Langlotz and Sharon Van Allen had a good day. They defeated Smiths Falls in the morning, but lost a tight match in the afternoon to Arnprior, who finished second overall, just behind the champs from Renfrew. In spite of the long drive, they enjoyed the outing, and finished third overall in the bonspiel.

Friday saw three Cornwall teams were in town, to pay a return visit to the senior men at our club.

 Our first squad consisted of Neil Williams, Raymond Benoit, Wayne Pulford and Jim Millard/Bud Perry. The second was Don O’Brien, Martin Schneckenburger, Eric Johnson and Ken Wilson.  Third were Sid Morrell, Peter Zeran, Earl Jeacle and Al Gowanlock. 

Halfway though the match the local fellows moved one sheet to the right to take on a fresh challenge from a new Cornwall foursome. Meanwhile, the kitchen and the lounge were humming with activity as a fine luncheon was being prepared. 

When the dust settled, the local fellows were victorious on sheets B and C, while the visitors prevailed on sheet A. Another busy day for the club.

    Saturday, Mahlon Locke and his committee ran our friendly bonspiel, while Greta McGann and her committee prepared a fine lunch. Ten teams took part, playing two games each. While the matches were friendly, the competition was keen. 

Sid Morrell, Betty Locke and Len Bellamy won the day with 18.5 points, while Wally McDonald, Raymond Benoit and Greta McGann finished second with 18 and Susan McIntosh, Carolyn Beckstead and Claire and Paula Locke finished third, a point behind. 

Representatives from most of the leagues competed, and $500 was raised towards a new carpet. Thanks, Mahlon, Greta, and all of the others who made this happen.

It’s the season for parties, with the Thursday morning folks having a catered lunch from Subway again. Still a few openings there. Many of the other leagues are also arranging for various wind-up events before Christmas. Curling really wears on you, doesn’t it? 

Arrangements are being made for a New Year’s Eve bonspiel and party. There’s a sign-up sheet at the club. Should be fun! Good curling to all.

While most racers from the Northeast put the 2011 season to rest long ago, and are waiting out a long cold winter, Luke Whitteker has stretched his season right through to the end of the 2011 calendar year.  

The 18-year-old Iroquois youth’s involvement in the Race 101 program has opened plenty of doors of opportunity this year. Whitteker has made several trips to North Carolina to attend classes, plus weekly online seminars that were also part of the curriculum for Race 101.  One of the program was the opportunity to run laps at the famous Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, North Carolina.

Aside from the on track portion of the Race 101 program, and the wealth of knowledge that he learned over the course of the year, Whitteker has also enjoyed meeting new people, and making several connections that will last a lifetime with prominent people in the racing community. 

As a group, some of the Race 101 staff, and several of this year students attended the annual P.R.I. (Performance Racing Industry) Trade Show that was held in Orlando, Florida recently.   The objective of attending this show was to learn, and also to interact with other people from the racing community,

The P.R.I. Trade show hosts over 1000 racing related vendors, and takes in sellers from all over the United States, Canada and many other countries.  The opportunity to interact with people from other forms of racing at a large trade show such as this is phenomenal.

“The PRI show was well worth the time,” says Whitteker.  “I would recommend any racer that is looking to get a jump start for the upcoming season or learn more about new and up and coming products to check out similar expos. I made a lot of great new connections and learned a lot about products available to the dirt racing market”.

Whitteker also had other exciting events in November, as he was able to take to the track in the Race 101 house car at the famed Hickory Motor Speedway.  

This was the first time Luke ever raced a car on pavement, and posted very consistent lap times that were comparable to other students with pavement experience.  The Race 101 premiere driver will be chosen in January when the class returns to North Carolina for their graduation.

“We had an awesome practice session with Tony Blanchard from Race 101,” says Whitteker.  “Asphalt racing is a lot of fun. It is very comparable to the go-kart racing that we did earlier in my career, and we enjoyed a lot of success with that.”

Whitteker also attended the annual Parts Peddler trade show in Syracuse during the month of November.  The show is similar in nature to the P.R.I. Trade Show, only more scaled down, and typically more specific to the Northeast region.

Also the Whitteker Motorsports team participated in the annual Christmas Parade along the streets of Morrisburg.  The Whitteker team prepared a float that included the race car, as well as a Christmas tree, and several Christmas decorations.

“I’d like to thank everyone that helped put the float together and represent Whitteker Motorsports in Morrisburg’s annual Christmas parade,” says Whitteker.  “I hope every one appreciates the hard work that was put into the float as much as I do.”

Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry skating, and oh yeah Merry Christmas too! 

As you can tell it’s Christmas month at M.D.S.C and to get in the mood we’re playing Christmas songs all month. This may seem odd since Christmas still seems very far away, but there are only 12 days until the big guy comes!  

However, Santa wants to check up on our Canskaters, so he’ll be at the rink in just five days, on the 19th, for all our Monday and Saturday Canskaters!  If you really want to get in the Christmas spirit remember to wear red and green to the rink on the 17th.

Christmas may be all that’s on your mind right now, but for many of our Starskaters, competitions  and test days all they are worrying about.  There is a competition  on the 21st and 22nd of January in Prescott and one on the 28th in Arnprior. 

In Morrisburg, on the 27th of January, we have a low test day, and on the 20th of January in Athens, we have a high test day. 

Finally, just a reminder for our skaters that skating is cancelled form the 24 of December to the 2nd of January.  Canskaters don’t come back until the 9th of January, but the Starskaters are back on the 4th.

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions mixed it up with the Rideau Division this past weekend and when the play was finished they had picked up a pair of points.

In front of their home town fans on Friday night, the Lions put it together for a crushing 10-3 win over the Rideau division’s fifth place Brockville Tikis.

Sunday night, they were on the road to Athens to tackle the second place Aeros, but came out on the wrong side of a 5-2 final score.

“It was 3-2 at the end of the first period and we were coming on,” said Lions coach Thom Racine of the Athens game. “Then we gave up a soft goal early in the third period and we tanked. We just didn’t have anything in the third period which was sad because we had played so well in the first two periods.”

“We probably outplayed them in the first period, but we couldn’t score.”

The Aeros led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by J.P. Augustine.

They went up 3-0 in the second with goals added by Damian Levesque and Michael Byrne.

Then late in the frame, the Lions regrouped and came back for two to tighten the count to 3-2.

Chris Rutley got it rolling with help from Clarke Veenstra, and then with 25 second left on the clock Veenstra struck on the Lions power play.

Setting up the power-play counter were Michael Paquette and Marc Antoine Kamel.

It was less than two minutes into the third period when Kyle Mazerolle counted “the soft goal” and “we just died,” said Racine.

“We had a good intermission and felt good. Mik (goaltender Mikael Dion) was giving us good goaltending.”

As for Friday night’s win against the Brockville Tikis, Racine said, “It was a big night for us. Our power play was good and we got some short-handed goals. We weren’t really in any trouble all night.”

The Lions got it rolling with four consecutive first period goals. Less than two minutes in, Ryan Ward struck for goal number one from Sylvester Bzdyl and Alex Steingruber. Then Chris Rutley counted on the Lions power play at 7:46 from Sam Hodgson and Michel Lefebvre.

Two minutes later Brayden Girard (from Lance Hodgson) scored short handed for a 3-0 Lions advantage.

Bzdyl (from Matt Ouimet and Michael Keenan) finished off the Lions first period scoring, again while they were on the power play.

The Tikis got one against goaltender Mikael Dion, before the buzzer sounded to end the frame, from Jordan Sourwine.

Second period action was again dominated by the Lions with goals from Michael Poapst (from Rutley and Lefebvre), Michel Thurler (from Rutley and Lefebvre) and Ryan Ward (from Steingruber and Michael Keenan).

The Lions led 7-3 heading into the third where another three unanswered third period goals gave them the 10-3 win, their eighth of the season.

Scoring this period were Lefebvre (from Rutley and Poapst), Ward (from Michael Paquette and Steingruber) and Brayden Girard (from Kamel and Lance Hodgson).

The Lions out shot the Tikis 44-41 and scored two power play goals in eight opportunities.

Coming up this week, “we have a huge game against Akwesasne,” says Racine. “Akwesasne always plays tough in our barn.”

The Wolves are in town this Friday night, December 16. Game time is 8:30 p.m.

Then on Saturday night, the Lions are on the road to Westport to take on the Rideau Division’s first place Rideaus.

The Lions are currently in the St. Lawrence Division’s fifth spot, five points back of the Char-Lan Rebels. 

This past weekend the Rebels picked up a single point in an overtime loss (shoot out) to Westport. They lost 7-5 to Athens on Saturday night.

“We gained a point on the Rebels on the weekend to keep pace and are now six points ahead of Akwesasne,” says Racine.

Racine says that with school exams now over he is expecting to ice a full squad this weekend, a welcome change for the Lions.

The South Dundas “Parcoll Auto Parts” Novice B Lions continued their hot streak adding two more victories to their win column. 

The Lions finished the first half of their schedule with a record of 6-2-4 and were looking to improve their standings coming into the weekend games.

On Saturday, during Lions Day, the Lions faced-off against the North Dundas Demons and defeated them 7-1. 

Offensively for the Lion’s Nolan Henry and Kayne McCadden both scored hat-tricks, while line mate Kolby Latulippe added a single.

The Lions scored early and often, building a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period. 

Kayne McCadden scored at 8:33 on a breakaway pass from Nolan Henry with Trent Rae picking up the secondary assist.

McCadden scored five minutes later on a shot from the slot after getting another pass from Henry off the left wing boards. 

A minute later, while shorthanded, McCadden got a breakaway pass from Trent Rae toachieve the ‘natural hat-trick’.

Nolan Henry then picked up the scoring stick to net one while playing 4-4. Henry broke into the Demons end and shot a puck on the ice just inside the right corner of the net. 

Kolby Latulippe would net one for himself jumping on a McCadden rebound for a 5-0 Lions lead.

Joshua Foley responded for the Demons on a shot from the blue line which beat Lion’s goaltender Brendan Shaver on a shot from the blue line. 

Henry responded for the Lions when he picked up a loose puck in front of the net and shot it home for his second of the game.

In the third period, Henry finished off the scoring. He completing his hat trick when he caught a pass from Emytt Fetterly at centre ice and deked out both Demon defenders before depositing the puck in the top corner of their net.

Sunday, the Lions hosted the Smith Falls #2 Bears and defeated them 5-3. 

The Lion’s again scored early as Joshua Broad banged home a pass from Ben Lapier from the front of the net. 

Owen Fetterly had dug the puck out along the right wing board getting it to Lapier who made the nice centering pass.

A few minutes later the Lions grabbed a 2-0 lead when Kayne McCadden made a lead pass to Kolby Latulippe. The puck deflected back to McCadden who broke in to beat the Bears defender and goalie. 

Before the period ended the Bears tied it 2-2 on a pair of goals by Owen Watson.

Opening the second period, McCadden won the face-off forward. He chased it down to break in on the Bears goalie alone and beat him to give the Lions the lead again, this time for good. 

The Bears had some chances but were cut off many times by the Lions’ defenders. 

Spencer Barclay and Cassidy Bilmer continued their strong play, cutting down would-be attackers as they crossed the blue line. 

Bilmer played a big role on defense moving the puck well out of the Lions end and keeping the puck in at the offensive line.

Ben Lapier scored late in the second period, and Owen Fetterly scored in the third. Joshua Broad and Lapier picked up assists on the Fetterly goal.

After giving up four short-handed goals in a 9-2 loss to the Vikings in Casselman Thursday night, the Morrisburg Junior B Lions turned it around on home ice Sunday, for a 7-1 win over the St. Lawrence Division’s third place Alexandria Glens.

The Lions went up 1-0 in the first period against the Glens, Sunday with an unassisted goal from Chris Rutley, his first since his return to the Lions lineup a week ago.

In the second, Philippe Paquette beat Lions goaltender Mikael Dion to answer for the Glens.

But then, according to Lions coach Thom Racine, a strange thing happened, which seemed to bolster the Lions and completely shake up the Glens.

“Rutley scored a real beauty from his belly and from that point they seemed to disintegrate, while we picked up momentum. He was tripped and as he slid on his belly he got control of the puck and scored.”

After that it was a power-play frenzy for the Lions, as the Glens took one penalty after another and the Lions took advantage to score another five counters. Four of them were while they were on their power play.

“Four power-play goals were something we needed. And they came from all over. It was a good team effort.”

Drew Veenstra (unassisted) scored the first of the power play markers late in the second period to give the Lions a 3-1 advantage.

Then brother Clarke matched the effort with an unassisted counter at 1:38 of the third before providing the assist for a Marc Antoine Kamel power-play counter and a 5-1 Lions advantage.

Sylvester Bzdyl scored from Zach Seguin at 10:11 and Ryan Dunbar finished it off from Bzdyl and Zach Seguin on the Lions power play at 16:29.

“We played it like a game seven,” said Racine. “We knew we had to win if we wanted to keep within reach of CharLan.”

“We needed to play well and we needed to play smart and we did both on Sunday.”

In fact, even with the win, the Lions now find themselves six points behind the fourth place Rebels who are on a run. This past weekend, the Rebels added another pair of victories over Brockville, 5-3 and Akwesasne 4-2 as they set their sights on third place currently held by the Glens.

The first place Winchester Hawks have a slim three-point edge over the Casselman Vikings.

Thursday night in Casselman, the Lions just couldn’t get it together.

They trailed the Vikings 3-1 after the first period and 5-1 after two.

Michael Paquette scored their lone first period goal on the power play from Alex Steingruber and Michael Keenan. Clarke Veenstra added their second late in the third with help from Michel Lefebvre and Keenan, again on the Lions power -play.

In fact, the Lions power play was a big factor throughout the match as the Vikings collected four of their goals while they were short-handed.

“We weren’t paying enough attention. We forgot about Casselman’s ability to sneak in behind you and steal the puck.”

Mikael Dion started in the Lions net and was relieved midway into the second period by Ryan Cooper.

“I pulled Mikael after four goals and let Ryan play,” said Racine. “Mikael was disappointed, but he bounced back and gave us a great game Sunday. He was awesome on Sunday.”

Coming up this Friday night, December 9, the Lions host Brockville at 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, December 11 they are on the road to Athens to take on the Rideau’s second place Aeros.

The annual Dundas County Junior Girls Volleyball tournament was played at Nationview Public School on Thursday and upon the completion of some 40 plus games, Russell emerged the winners with 20 points. Close on their heels were the teams from Iroquois Public and St. Mary/St. Cecilia’s who tied for second spot with 18 points

Gretta McGann entered a team in the women’s Navy bonspiel in Ottawa last week. With her were Alice Thompson, Yvonne Mabo and Claire Locke. They dropped their first match to a foursome from the Ottawa R.A. Centre, and after a fine lunch, tackled a Perth quartet. It was a good game, and our folks emerged victorious.

Their scores put them in third place on the day, and some prizes were available. The two teams ahead of them were tied, and, unable to break the tie, the organizers split the first and second place money for them. 

The skip of one of the teams had fallen in the first end of their initial match, and was unable to continue. When the three curlers finished the end, they decided to forfeit their match, but the organizers found them a replacement. Good thing they kept playing!

One of our senior teams is in Metcalfe this week for that club’s invitational bonspiel. We’ll have the results next time. Also our men host three Cornwall senior teams in a return friendly match this Friday, and we’ll have those results for you

Alice Thompson and her committee are hosting a women’s invitational bonspiel this week. Same story concerning reporting there. 

Teams from Navan, Prescott, Maxville, City View, Russell, two from Cornwall, Lancaster, Kemptville, Alexandria, and Ottawa’s R.A. Centre are here. One club had trouble getting a team together, so our Gretta McGann volunteered to fill in with three other local ladies. 

As always, the organizers have an all-volunteer group to staff the kitchen, the bar, and prepare the ice. And to maximize profits for our club on the day, all of the food has been prepared and donated by the local women.

At time of writing, there are still a few openings for the club bonspiel this Saturday. It’s a fund raiser to support getting a new carpet for the club. Looks like a nice event, with a great lunch provided. If there’s still room on Wednesday, why not sign up for what promises to be a very pleasant day.

The notices for renewal of club supporters’ signs are in the mail, and we hope all will continue their club sponsorship. We value your assistance and will continue to support your businesses.

Coming up later this month are the friendly bonspiel for Saturday, December 17, and the two-day OCA competition for senior curlers, Friday and Saturday, December 23 and 24. Hope we have some local teams entered!

Ian Wilson and family members are looking after the Little Rocks program again this year. The 16 curlers practice on Monday nights, and will be competing in bonspiels in the new year. They are also hosting teams from Metcalfe, Russell and Winchester in their Big Four tournament

For those aspiring to greater things on the ice, last weekend could have been an inspiration, as TSN covered the semi-finals and finals for the men’s and women’s Canada Cup. Jennifer Jones won the title for the ladies, defeating Chelsea Carey, and Kevin Martin edged Glenn Howard on the men’s side. Besides the money and the prestige, the winners guaranteed themselves a place in the “curling sweepstakes” leading to qualifying for the Olympics.

Bolstered by the return of two former scoring heavy weights,  Michele Lefebvre and Chris Rutley, the Morrisburg Junior B Lions gave the Winchester Hawks a run for their money here Friday night.

Still hurting from an 11-2 loss to the Hawks on their home ice on November 4, the Lions, according to coach Thom Racine, “retooled and came back to play a solid game.” 

The Lions kept pace throughout Friday night’s  game against the division leading Hawks only to give up a 6-5 loss on a Hawks’ power-play goal with just 54 seconds left on the clock.

Coming through solid for the Lions, once again, was Alex Steingruber who put together an outstanding three goal performance. 

Steingruber’s first goal was scored on the Lions’ power play (assisted by Chris Rutley), and the  second was assisted by Ryan Ward and Clarke Veenstra. The third he scored, unassisted, to tie the game 5-5, at 14:43 of the third period while the Lions were short-handed.

“We battled them hard,” said Racine. “Then we took a horrible slashing penalty in the neutral zone (with 2:20 left in the third period and the score tied 5-5) and that cost us.”

“Steingruber had a great game. We have the offense now (with the addition of Rutley and Lefebvre). Now we have to start winning games.” 

It is the second time this year that Lefebvre has signed with the Lions, but this time with the December 1 card deadline here, he understands the Lions can’t afford to waste a card.

The card deadline means that all teams must go down to 25 cards (signed or unsigned) and that is it for the rest of the season.

Lefebvre was the Lions’ Rookie of the Year last season and second in the Lions’ scoring. He also finished in the St. Lawrence Division’s top 10 scoring race.

“He’s a dynamic player and he is happy to be back,” says Racine.

Chris Rutley started his junior hockey with the Lions. In the 2009/10 season he was the team’s top scorer and finished eighth overall in the St. Lawrence Division’s scoring race. That year he was named the Lions best forward and picked up team silverware for top scorer and most assists.

The following season he was off to college in Kingston and with the travel situation, the Lions traded him to the Westport Rideaus.

His return to the Lions this past weekend was the result of trades involving the Rideaus, the Lions Char-Lan, Rutley and former Lions’ goaltender Erik Plummadore who ended up in Char-Lan.

Rutley is in his final season of junior age and next year will be an overage player.

“They (Rutley and Lefebvre) are both very dynamic players and they make us better,” says Racine. They make our kids better. In Winchester, we never led the game, but we were never really out of it either. With seconds to go, Steingruber had a wide open net. He shot and the puck hit something that deflected it away. We were that close to the tie.”

Dylan Chessell scored the lone first period goal for a 1-0 Hawks lead.

Steingruber tied it at 12:51 of the second period, but a pair of  quick counters from Josh Stubbings (14:18 and 14:30) gave the Hawks a two-goal edge.

The Lions, however, weren’t ready to roll-over, and before the period ended they had tied it on goals from Clarke Veenstra (assisted by Chris Rutley) and Steingruber (from Ward and Veenstra).

In the third, the Hawks again went up by two (Brock Burge at 3:42 and Steven Johnston at 4:41) to again force the Lions to recharge.

Vincent Bauline-Charland scored on the Hawks power-play at 19:06 for the 6-5 win.

The game did start but was cancelled due to ice conditions just seconds after the puck was dropped.

According to Racine, safety became an issue in the area just seconds after the game started and as a result it was cancelled.

With just one game on the weekend and that the loss to the Hawks, the Lions now find themselves trailing the CharLan Rebels in the St. Lawrence Division standing by four points.

The Rebels put together a pair of weekend wins over Alexandria 5-2 and Akwesasne 5-4.

Coming up the Lions are in Casselman Thursday night. They host the St. Lawrence Division’s third place Alexandria Glens at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
