The South Dundas “We Can Contracting” Atom B Rep Lions moved back into the win column Friday night after a rough stretch of games. 

The Lions, who were sitting in fifth place after a loss at the hands of the NGS Braves on Tuesday night, travelled to Long Sault on Friday night looking to move ahead of the Selects who were sitting one point ahead of them in fourth place in the tight East Division  standings.

A 2-1 Lions win, did the trick, however, they needed a big third period to overcome a 1-0 deficit in a tightly battled game. 

The Lions out shot the Selects through the scoreless first period and had an excellent scoring opportunity when Jaeden Phifer-Shaver found a wide open Joshua Broad on the right wing. Broad skated in alone but his backhand missed the net wide as Selects defenders closed in on him. 

Some great Lions goaltending from Brendan Shaver kept the game scoreless until a Lions turnover created a scoring chance for Selects forward Jacob Willison who buried a backhand shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 Lions lead.

As the third period began, the line of Ben Lapier, Nolan Henry and Owen Fetterly pressed hard and were rewarded with a goal to tie the game 1-1. 

It started when Dana Domanko kept the puck alive at the point. She fed it down low to Henry who battled with a Select defender but was able to get it free to Lapier who walked out front and slid the puck home on a wrap-a-round.

Minutes later, the Lions found themselves on the power-play. The Lions gained control of the zone and when a Selects defender attempted to ice the puck Nathen Verhey cut it off. 

Verhey then wristed a shot high towards the goal that deflected off a South Stormont stick into the net for a 2-1 Lions lead.

The Lions held off the Selects late push, killing a penalty in the final two minutes with the Selects goalie on the bench for a six on four advantage. 

Shaver and the Lions defense held strong and the Lions left town stealing the 2-1 victory.

Tuesday night, in Finch the Lions scored before the ice was dry when Ben Lapier banged home an Owen Fetterly rebound thirteen second into the game. 

The NGS Braves however responded once in the first period and again in the second to take a 2-1 lead into the third.

They scored early in the third period to take a 3-1 lead that might have been considered insurmountable. 

But, with time ticking away, the Lions broke out of their end with Ben Lapier carrying the puck. Spotting a wide open Nolan Henry on the left wing Lapier made a tape at tape pass  which sent Henry in alone on the Braves goalie. Henry’s shot which sailed high over the glove hand cut the Braves lead to one. 

Moments later Lapier and Henry teamed again, this time with Kieran Geurkink jumping up from the blue line to back hand the puck over a sprawling Braves goaltender to tie the game, 3-3.

The Braves responded to take a 4-3 lead, but Lions pressured one last time to get the equalizer on their power play.

With the Lions goaltender Brendan Shaver on the bench for an extra attacker the Lions pressured, but the buzzer sounded before they could create any scoring chances.

The South Dundas “We Can Contracting” Atom B Rep Lions will face the Kemptville Panthers in Morrisburg on Saturday night at 7 p.m. followed by the Major Midget B Rep Lions who host the North Dundas Demons.

The Seaway Intermediate Spartans defeated South Grenville 1-0 in the championship game of an all-day tournament on the home field last Tuesday to earn the right to advance to the Intermediate Soccer Championships coming up in Kemptville on Tuesday, October 18. On their way to the local championship the girls defeated St. Mary/St. Cecilia, 5-0, St. Marks, 4-0, and South Grenville 4-0 behind the unbeatable goaltending of Kendra Buter. “It was an outstanding team effort,” said coach Robin Gibbs of the Spartans win. The Morrisburg Junior B Lions finished the 2014-15 season with a win and a loss in weekend action against the Akwesasne Wolves.

They got it started on Cornwall Island, Saturday night, February 14, with a 5-4 overtime victory and then brought it back to Morrisburg on Sunday, where this time it was the Wolves coming out on top by a 5-3 score.

The two games ended the season for the Wolves (30 points) and Lions (25 points) who finished in the last two positions in the St. Lawrence Division of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League and failed to earn a playoff spot.

The Casselman Vikings finished first with an enviable 70 point season, while the Alexandria Glens and the Winchester Hawks finished tied with 49 points. The Char-Lan Rebels claimed fourth spot with 39 points.

The St. Lawrence Division semi-final series will see the Rebels take on first place Casselman, while the Glens and the Hawks square off. The Glens got the nod for second place and will enjoy the extra home game in the semi-final series by virtue of their record.

Saturday night the Lions took a 1-0 first period lead over the Wolves on a Jacob Kendrick goal assisted by Tanner Hummel.

The second period was a seesaw affair with the Wolves coming out on top 3-2 for a 3-3 tie going into the third period.

Scoring for the Wolves in the second period were Brock Daze with a pair and Tylor Alguire. 

Lions leading scorer, Michael Paquette provided both Lions goals, the first on the Lions power play, assisted by Jacob Kendrick and the second by Cole Fowler.

Kendrick made it 4-3 Lions, 2:25 into the third period with help from Alex Sifton on the Lions power play and goaltender Keiran Weir protected their lead until 11:44 when he gave up one to Jacob Swamp.

That is the way it stayed through regulation time to force the overtime.

It all ended just 44 seconds into the overtime with an unassisted Jacob Kendrick goal for the 5-4 Lions victory.

Sunday on Morrisburg ice, goals were traded in the first period with Dallas Blacksmith scoring for the Lions at 5:26 and Nicholas Talarico answering for the Wolves.

Again the second period featured a seesaw battle, this time with the Wolves getting three past Lions goaltender Brett Hahn and the Lions answering back with just two, both from Michael Paquette.

That allowed the Wolves to carry a 4-3 advantage into the third period.

The Wolves got one more from Derik Dionne at 4:33 of the third period for the 5-3 victory.

Cory Garrow was in net for the Wolves, Saturday night, and Logan Gauthier got the win on Sunday.

Semi-final playoff action will see the Hawks open against Alexandria in Alexandria tonight, Wednesday, February 18 and game two is set for Winchester this Friday, February 20 starting at 8:15 p.m.

Char-Lan will travel to Casselman,  Thursday, February 19 and will host the Vikings for game two, Saturday night, February 21. Game time is 8 p.m.
