Kurtis Barkley, one under for fourth consecutive victory

Cedar Glen golfer, Kurtis Barkley shot a one under par 69 here Saturday, to successfully defend his Morrisburg Men’s Open title for the fourth consecutive year.

The 24 year old, Williamsburg golfer, who this year is playing out of both Cedar Glen and Upper Canada, recently qualified in the Chase the Dream event with a three-over-par 75 shot at Upper Canada.

At the qualifier he wasn’t satisfied with his putting, so he has since changed to a belly putter, and the results showed up in the 69 he shot at Morrisburg, on Saturday.

The Morrisburg course is experiencing major issues with several greens which made Saturday’s putting difficult for the 63 golfers.

“I had 31 putts today, which is below my average,” said Barkley who opened his round with a pair of bogies. Although the par five first hole is one of the troubled Morrisburg greens, Barkley said he couldn’t fault the green for the opening six. “It was actually a one-putt bogie,” he said with a laugh. The bogie four on the par three second hole, also not in good condition, was, however, the result of a three putt.

After that the talented young golfer charged back with three consecutive birdies to go to one under and that’s how he finished it on the front, with a one under 34.

On the back, Barkley stayed at one under until a three putt on the par five 15th pushed him to even.

He got the stroke back with a birdie on the par three 17th and finished the round at 69 for his fourth consecutive championship.

Next up in the 19-player A flight was Rob Kimmerly (Prescott) with a 73. Upper Canada golfer, Lance Lepage was third with a 74 and Matt Rochon was next at 75.

Morrisburg’s Kevin Duvall shot a 76 which gave him the A field’s low net with a 67, and Dave Saunders (Brockville) was next with a 77. The final two golfers to break 80, in A flight, were Peter Gilder (Brockville) and Brett Corlyon (Cornwall) with 79s.

Sixty-three golfers competed in three flights in this year’s men’s open.

The top shooter in B flight, for the second consecutive year, was Lee Beaupre (Morrisburg) with a 77. Last year Beaupre shot a 78 to tie for the top B flight position but lost in a playoff.

This year he took the title by a single stroke over Bruce Perrin of Prescott. The two were the only B flight shooters to break 80.

Coming in with an 80 for third place was Scott Hodgson of Morrisburg. Eric Wemerman, Morrisburg and Randy Mullin, Iroquois were next with 81s. Wemerman’s 81 gave him a net score of 63 for the flight’s low net win.

Greg Millard (Morrisburg) and Allan McNairn (Upper Canada) were next up, tied with 83s.

For the second consecutive year, a playoff was required to determine the C flight winner. Jason Broad and Dan McLelland, both of Morrisburg, shot 87s for the tie and the latter took the win in sudden death play.

Doug Warner (Morrisburg) was next up with an 88 and after that, the scores went into the 90s with Sean Boulerice and Steve Boucher (both Morrisburg) tied with 91s.

Local youth dominate gridiron

Four local youth are dominating the football field in Cornwall’s minor football spring league.

To ease travel issues coach Clint took a risk and drafted the four South Dundas kids, Brody Fairbairn, Charlie Gould, Aden Casselman, and Spencer Barclay, and now it is paying off in spades for the team.

Brody Fairbairn started the season on defence, but an injury to their team’s starting quarterback gave him a shot in the spotlight, and he seized the opportunity.

Fairbairn ran with it, going undefeated during the regular season 7-0, throwing for four touchdowns, and running for four.

Casselman and Gould (the two-headed monster ) are a force to be reckoned with on the line both playing defence and offence.

Gould is turning into a QB’s nightmare and a threat as a wide receiver.

He is using his hands of gold to catch touchdowns, and then on defence he is driving opposition QBs to the ground, averaging three sacks a game.

Aden Casselman is the second half of the two-headed monster on the defensive line. Casselman is always coming from the opposite side of the line to give the running backs and QBs no back door when Gould is coming for a sack.

Casselman is averaging a sack and a half per game with his famous bull rush style. He also prides himself as an offensive line man, filling holes to give Fairbairn time to make a play.

The fourth of the South Dundas group is the youngest of the team, but you wouldn’t know it by his fearless running style.

Spencer Barclay is often taking on kids two years older and twice his weight, darting and deeking would be tacklers, leaving them to wonder how they missed him.

The galloping ghost also lines up at WR to catch first down passes. The boys and their team now face their toughest test of the year.

Their 7-1 record earned them a bye to the final coming up this Sunday, June 24th. No doubt the local Cornwall youth will not want the hardware to leave their city.

Missing Monkey in New Blue Win

The New Blue struck seven times in the third period and that was more than enough to take out the Morewood Monkeys in Men’s Roller Hockey League action here last Thursday.

It was actually a case of the missing Monkeys in the third period, as they had held the league leading New Blue to a 4-3 lead in the first period and trailed only 9-6 at the end of two.

While New Blue goaltender Will McIntire held the Monkeys from the scoreboard in the third, Monkey goaltender Kyle Shane gave up seven to the Blues for the 16-6 Blue win.

Garreth Cochrane and Lance Hodgson were the top Blue shooters with four goals apiece. Tommy Keyes connected for three goals, Justin Elliott had two and singles came from Jamie McIntosh, Aron Sherrer and Randy Markell.

Mike Thompson and Tyler Jones answered twice each for the Monkeys, and Chris Embury and Justin Heuff had singles.

The win allowed the New Blue to remain undefeated after four games. They hold a full four point advantage over White Lightning, who Thursday night, collected a 13-8 victory from the Red Rockets.

They led the Rockets 4-2 after the first period and 9-5 after two.

Steve Mattice had a huge night for Lightning with five goals while Brandon Buma and Chris Embury added three apiece, and Dave Summers and Bill Henderson struck for singles.

Summers added six assists to his one goal effort.

Answering for the Rockets, against Lightning goaltender Barret Brundige, were Chad McMillan, David Patterson and Dean Moore all with two goals and Craig Belanger and Darrel Moore with singles.

Chris Sloan handled the loss in the Rockets net.

The win allowed Lightning to take over the league’s second spot with four points. The Rockets are in third with three and the Monkeys have just one.

Jr. B Lions coach, Thom Racine packs it in

Morrisburg Junior B Lions head coach Thom Raccine has announced that he will not be returning to the bench this season.

Raccine has been on the bench for three seasons. He started as assistant coach to March Bissonnette in the 2009-2010 season.

When Bissonnette resigned his position in November of the next season, Raccine agreed to take over as head coach.

That decision resulted in several weeks of the most gratifying coaching experience, the Cornwall resident, says he could have hoped to experience. “We never gave up, we believed in ourselves and that is the part that makes you feel proud.”

He is of course speaking of the comeback the team made from January on, to turn the season around and earn a spot in the St. Lawrence Division playoffs.

That was followed by a very disappointing 2011-12 season, which finished with the Lions in the division’s fifth place with just 27 points.

Raccine says he is walking away with some great memories and is happy with the support and cooperation he received from the Lions team management.

Raccine played his junior hockey with the Metcalfe Jets during the mid-70s era when the Morrisburg Lions were on top of theleague. Until he came to the Lions three seasons ago, he had never coached hockey.

“It goes without saying, it was a life long dream, and I have to thank the Lions for the opportunity,” which allowed him not only to coach but to coach a team on which his son played. “I have to thank Ron (Casselman), Kevin (Casselman) Jack (Bjergso) and Dale (Lewis). They did everything they could to make it an easy task. They were always very good and up front with me.”

“For me it’s not selling the farm. I tried it and I believe there were parts that were very rewarding. I have some wonderful memories.”

Raccine is very busy with his career in law enforcement in Cornwall, as a published writer, and a news paper sports columnist.

“My wife Karen and I have given up our winter weekends for three years and it’s gotten to the point where it is enough.”

Raccine says he is extremely interested in getting into the research for his second book.

“It was hard at time, but it was fun. And I got to spend some time with my son. I have some really good memories.”

Seaway senior girls strong, 1-2 at SD&G

Although it was certainly far from the largest track and field team Seaway District High School has fielded, it had its moments, particularly at the senior girls level.

Leading this year’s Seaway team were veteran athletes Jessica Thompson and  Gillian Beatson who won the top one and two spots at the SD&G meeting held at St. Lawrence High School in May.

Both are established track and field athletes and both train with the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club.

Thompson scored the overall top senior girl award at the SD&G with gold medal finishes in the sprint hurdles, the 400m hurdles and the 400m.

Beatson was second with gold medal wins in long jump and the 200m, and a second behind her teammate in the sprint hurdles.

“They are both athletic kids” said Seaway track and field coach Trevor Thompson. “They are very talented and very good at individual sports. Both are successful figure skaters.”

Unfortunately, Seaway’s track team will be saying goodbye to Thompson who is in her final high school year.

According to coach Thompson, she is planning to attend the University of Windsor, “and is hoping to run track and field with them next year.”

Both of the girls advanced from the SD&G to EOSSAA which was held in Belleville.

Thompson qualified for the East  Regional with a third in the 400m hurdles at EOSSAA and a fourth in sprints.

Although she competed at Regional, she wasn’t feeling well and did not complete her events.

Beatson claimed a third place finish in long jump at EOS
SAA but did not compete at Regionals.

Another highlight for Seaway was an SD&G gold medal win by Brodie Casselman in the senior boys 200m. Casselman also qualified for EOSSAA in the 100m. He competed in both at EOSSAA but did not claim a East Region qualifying position.

Also at the SD&G senior boys level, Monty Hamadi qualified for EOSSAA in the 400m. He did not compete at EOSSAA.

Ryan Douma qualified in shotput and the 400m hurdles at the SD&G and distance runner Denzil Barkley qualified in the 1500m and 3000m.

Neither was able to advance out of their EOSSAA  events.

At the midget level, runner Riley Barry won the SD&G 100m and qualified in the 200 and 400m runs.

Matching him was Ali VanHoof who picked up a gold medal in triple jump and qualifying finishes in the 300 and 800m hurdles.

Neither of the two advanced past EOSSAA.

Overall, the kids worked hard,” said Thompson. “We started in the second week of March and travelled to three invitational meets.”

“For the most part, they all achieved personal bests. I really enjoyed working with them all. They are all great kids.

Luke Whitteker second at Cornwall

It was a busy weekend for Luke Whitteker and the Whitteker Motorsports team, with events scheduled at Autodrome Granby in Quebec on Friday night, Brockville Speedway on Saturday and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday,

Unfortunately, Mother Nature would once alter their Friday night plans with Granby canceling their racing program early. That gave the team an opportunity to implement a backup plan to return to Mohawk International Raceway, only to wait out a rain delay, and eventually get cancelled there as well.

At Brockville on Saturday night, Whitteker finished sixth in his qualifying heat race, and would have to start the 30 lap main event from 16th place.  Despite an ill-handling car, he was able to climb to 11th place at the checkered flag.

The final stop on the weekend was Cornwall Motor Speedway.

Whitteker began the night with a second place finish in his preliminary heat race.

After making some adjustments on the car, Whitteker rolled off the starting grid from third place, and quickly moved to second.

Whitteker had several restarts on the outside and would challenge for the lead each time, but would end up finishing second.

While the young Iroquois driver has been running as much as he can with the DIRT Modified, attention will soon start shifting to the Race 101 pavement Late Model, as he looks forward to a test session at the end of the month at Southern National Speedway in North Carolina.

Whitteker will be testing in preparation for his three starts at the track later this summer.

This coming weekend, Whitteker will race at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, Brockville Speedway on Saturday, and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday.

With a great run this past weekend, he will be looking to capture his first win of the 2012 season.

Another shut out for U13 Kickers

The Seaway Kickers U13 Mixed soccer team scored their second straight shut out, 4-0, Thursday night (June 7) when they traveled to Regina Elementary School in Ottawa, to take on the Ottawa Royals.

Seaway got on the board 10 minutes into the game with a break-away goal by Kurt Cutler.

There was plenty of back and forth action midfield with both Seaway and Ottawa trying to keep the ball out of their end.

At the 38 minute mark, David Swerdfeger scored on Ottawa from a pass from Cutler.

In the second half, Ottawa rallied and tried to cut through Seaway’s defensive line but could only muster three shots on goal. Seaway answered the rally with multiple charges in Ottawa’s end and at the 77 minute mark, Aaron Tibben scored to it 3-0.

In the dying seconds of the game, Brayden Blacquiere-risk shot from the side low and in the corner making it 4-0.

Goalie Shawn Dowson recorded his second shut out of the season. The team faces Nepean City Thursday, June 14 at the Merkley Soccer Fields in Iroquois.

Other Seaway Kicker results:

The U18 Mixed team beat the Ottawa Internationals 4-1, June 7th in Iroquois.

The U15 Girls team hosted Nepean City June 6th, winning 1-0.

The U18 Girls team beat Nepean City 4-2 in Ottawa, June 4th.
