Zippity Do Dah!

Oh those grandkids….They do keep us young. Such was the case for Olive MacIntosh of Williamsburg, who, with her daughter Marilyn and son-in-law Jim (Adams) visited her granddaughters Kylie and Katherine in British Columbia in September. In addition to a visit to Whistler and a tour of the Olympic site, the family took Olive, who turned 84 just last week, ziplining. Granddaughter Katherine works for Ziptrek Eco Tours, a world leader in the design, development and operation of zipline-based eco adventures. The company’s flagship location is in Whistler.  Top left, Olive gives a thumbs up as she is about to take off. Left she is pictured with son-in-law Jim Adams and above she is photographed as she ziplines through the treetops.

Novice Bs start season with win/tie

The South Dundas “Pioneer Gas” Novice B Lions started their regular season on the road last week with a tie (3-3) in Kemptville and a win in Westport (6-2). Kayne McCadden led the offense by netting five goals in the two games.

Saturday afternoon, the Lions rolled into Westport, where they defeated the North Leeds Stars 6-2.

With the game tied 2-2 late in the second period, Joshua Broad picked up a Ben Lapier rebound and fired it home for his first goal of the season and a 3-2 Lions lead which they would not relinquish.

In the third period, Broad, standing behind his own goalie, knocked down a North Leeds shot that had beat Lions goalie Brendan Shaver and was going in the net. Broad then made an outlet pass to Owen Fetterly who went the distance to score the Lions forth goal.

Broad followed that effort when he used his Howitzer Hockey Stick to pick up his second goal of the game for a 5-2 Lions lead.

Capping off the Lions scoring was Nolan Henry who received a pass from Emytt Fetterly and broke in and beat Stars goalie Westwader. Cassidy Bilmer also picked up an assist on the play.

Spencer Barclay and Trent Rae continued their strong play on the Lions blue line as they turned away several Stars attackers. Defensemen Emytt Fetterly and his partner Cassidy Bilmer, who both picked up an assists in the game, also had a strong game keeping the puck alive at the offensive blue line and chasing down Stars attackers.

The Lions had grabbed a first period lead on two goals by Kayne McCadden.

McCadden continued his strong play to start the season as he picked up pucks in his own end and would go “coast to coast” beating the Stars defenders before beating the Stars goaltender.

The Stars tied the game with two goals from Matthew Taite in a two minute span, late in the first period and early in the second.

Lions goalie Brendan Shaver had a quiet game in the Lions’ cage.

In Kemptville last Wednesday night, McCadden netted the Lions second hat trick of the year in a 3-3 tie.

With the Lions leading 3-2, and under two minutes left to play, the forward line of Joshua Broad, Ben Lapier and Owen Fetterly were on the ice to protect the lead.

They carried the play in the offensive zone for over a minute with several shots on net and hard pressure down low until the puck squirted out over the blue line and the Panthers converted on a goal by Noah Penney with 19 seconds left.

The Lions grabbed their first lead of the game with 5:05 left in the third period on a nifty move by centreman Kayne McCadden.

With Kolby Latulippe pressuring the Panthers right defenseman along the boards, he forced the puck into the middle right where McCadden was standing.

A quick toe drag around a Panther forward, quick acceleration around the defenseman and he broke in alone a netted a shot in the top corner over the goalie glove.

The story throughout the game was the amazing goaltending of Brendan Shaver, who faced and turned away dozens of shots. Shaver received the “The Big Stick Award” for his outstanding play and his hard work.

The Panthers opened the scoring at 4:05 of the first period and the Lions responded with 55 seconds left when Emytt Fetterly kept the puck alive at the blue line getting it in deep so McCadden could pick it up and score his first of the game.

In the second period, the Panthers went up 2-1, before McCadden netted another when yet again a puck went over the net and goalie from behind the goal line and ended up in front before being knocked home. Nolan Henry picked up the lone assist on play.

The South Dundas “Pioneer Gas” Lions open their regular season home schedule Saturday, October 15th at 7 p.m.

Split Decision for Bantam Bs

The South Dundas Bantam B Rep Lions kicked off the season on home ice, Monday, October 3, with a 3-2 loss to the South Grenville Rangers, but then got on the right track for game two with a 5-2 victory against the South Stormont Selects in Long Sault, on Friday, October 7.

The first league game against South Grenville proved the Rangers were out for revenge from the previous week’s 3-0 exhibition loss to the Lions.

At 5:28 of the first period, former Lion, Drew Gillard scored on a two-on-one, when his shot beat Lion goaltender Zach Frawley cleanly on the blocker side.

It wasn’t until the final seconds of the period that the Lions were able to tie the game on an Andrew Jarvis goal assisted by Josh Black and Quinn Bennis.

In the second period,  the Rangers went ahead when an unprotected Frawley stopped the original blast from Nicholas McColl and Devan Miller pounced on the rebound.

That effort was negated when the Lions Randy Fawcett, after successfully fighting for possession of the puck, delivered it to the top corner of the Rangers net to again even things up. Evan Mullin picked up the assist.

Early in the third, Andrew Hanna beat a screened Frawley for what would turn out to be the Rangers winning goal.

The remainder of the period featured end-to-end action, and with 24.6 seconds remaining, Frawley was pulled for an extra attacker.  The Rangers, however held on for the win.

On Friday, October 7th, the Lions were in Long Sault where they clipped the South Stormont Selects for their first win of the young season, 5-2.

Riley Barry (from Spencer Heldens) kicked off the Lions scoring at 1:29 of the first frame with a blast from inside the blue line that beat Drew Nichol cleanly.

Minutes later, Cameron Chayer scored for the Lions on a nice wrist shot to the top corner with Heldens setting it up on a two on one opportunity.

After Selects Alex Cleary, on a breakaway, was knocked down by defenseman Toby Mullin, his penalty shot beat Frawley and the Selects were back in it, now trailing just 2-1.

Early in the second period, the Lions Andrew Jarvis made an end-to-end rush with the Lions playing shorthanded, and his shot left a rebound for a waiting Heldens  who made it 3-1.

With 18 seconds left in the second period, Andrew Lalonde (Tavish MacLeod) was finally able to put one past Frawley when his slap shot beat him on glove side. That cut the gap to 3-2 heading into the third period.

Early in the third, Mullin drew a four minute (hit to head)  penalty, and Josh Black was assessed his first penalty in two years for cross checking which gave the Selects a five on three, power-play opportunity. The Lions penalty kill, however, was up to the task, and the Selects were held from the scoreboard.

Half way through the period, Barry scored his second goal, from Jarvis, and Randy Fawcett, assisted  by Bennis,  rounded it out on the Lions power play  for the 5-2 victory.

Quinn Bennis, who was moved to defence, played a strong game, along with Spencer Heldens who had a three point performance and Riley Barry who skated hard for a two-goal performance.

The Lions were at home to Brockville on Monday,  October 10. They travel to Athens, this Friday night October 14th for a 6 p.m start, and on Monday, October 17 they host Perth at 8 p.m.

Bantam Rep Lions shut out Rangers in exhibition action

The South Dundas “Pizza Hut” Novice B Lions kicked off the 2011/12 hockey season with back-to-back 5-4 and 4-2 wins against the South Stormont Selects.

Here on Thursday night, the Lions opened the season with a 5-4 win over the South Stormont Selects as they held on tightly to their one goal lead late in the third period. With their net emty, the Selects pressed to get the equalizer before the final buzzer but were turned away the Lions defense.

Lions goaltender Brendan Shaver was tested in the last couple of minutes but stood his ground and kept the puck in front of the goal line.

The Selects opened the scoring at the 3:30 minute mark of the first period and that score held with saves by goalies Keaton Woodside (Selects) and Brendan Shaver (Lions).

With 1:04 left in the period, the Lions got on the board when Kayne McCadden grabbed the puck in the offensive zone and made a few moves around the Selects defenders before burying the puck behind Woodside.

The Selects re-claimed the lead with 10 seconds left in the second when the Lion defence were caught up ice leaving Joshua Broad the lonely Lion to try and stop the Selects charge.

Throughout the second and third period, the Lions offense carried the play as defenders Emytt Fetterly, Cassidy Bilmer and Spencer Barclay kept the play alive many times at the offensive blue line.

At 6:26 the Selects took a 3-1 lead when a shot by Chase Duchesne squeaked a puck by Brendan Shaver.

With the game closing in on only a few minutes left the Lions offense went to work.

At 9:24 Joshua Broad passed the puck around a Select defender to Ben Lapier who went in on the Selects goalie and beat him glove side. At 11:23 Nolan Henry took a pass form Trent Rae at the Selects blue line and broke in on Woodside to beat him with another great shot.

On the very next shift Ben Lapier went to work scoring two goals in eight seconds to record the first three goal performance of the year. Owen Fetterly picked up the lone assist on the goals.

In the rematch and resulting 4-2 win, Ben Lapier (from Kolby Latulippe) opened the scoring for the Lions on the power play with 19 seconds left in the first period.

Early in the second, Lions goalie Brendan Shaver kept the Selects off the board with a huge glove save on a Selects shot from the slot.

Owen Fetterly gave the Lions a 2-0 lead when he carried the puck down the right wing and wristed a shot just as he approached the slot.

The Selects finally got on the board when Owen Carter banged in his own rebound when he pounced on a loose puck by the Lions net.

The Lions regained their two goal lead when Kayne McCadden got the puck from Latulippe in the right wing corner and flipped the puck over the goalie to Nolan Henry who was standing all alone in front of the net.

To his surprise the puck landed flat on the ice, right on his stick. The puck bounced away, but Henry quickly regained control and shot the puck off the Selects goalie’s right pad into the net.

Kayne McCadden scored with 1:31 left in the second period unassisted.

In the third period, Lions defenseman Spencer Barclay used his head (literally) in taking a scoring chance away from Selects Owen Carter.

It started when Carter crossed over the Lions blue line, cut into the middle of the ice and let a wrist shot go. The puck hit Barclay on the helmet and deflected out of play.

The South Dundas “Pizza Hut” Lions open their regular season to-night in Kemptville and travel to Westport on Saturday.

The Skater’s Edge

Scuba gear, flippers, bathing suits and skates, all the things needed to make a great October at the Morrisburg and District Skating Club (MDSC).

Now, I bet everybody knows to bring skates to the rink, but this month we are  going  under the sea!! All through October the arena will be an underwater fish adventure for the Canskaters.

Since we want as many people as possible to enjoy our underwater adventure October 3rd and 8th are bring  a friend nights!! The Canskaters can register their friend when they arrive, and both the Canskater and friend have a chance to win a Webkinz donated by Gilmer Pharmacy.

There’s nothing better than skating with a friend and possibly winning a Webkinz.  And for those who have fun skating with their MDSC buddy they can consider signing up for skating to enjoy the fun all season long!

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and enjoys lots of turkey. Moms and dads are reminded that there is still skating Thanksgiving Monday so have your dinner early!

The Starskaters arena are busy brushing up on their skills and dances. They are also busy selecting new music and working on their new solos for the competition season this winter. Ali VanHoof, a competitive skater who has been practicing hard and competing all summer, is now getting ready for Sectionals in November. Good Luck Ali!

Finally, an event a lot of us are looking forward to…dressing up and getting candy…Halloween! Probably the best holiday of the year, if you’re a kid. The rink is also getting into the spooky spirit and on Saturday, October 29th is our Halloween party!! All canskaters (Saturday and Monday) skaters are welcome to dress up, come out to skate and have a blast! If you want to get a preview of the little ghosts and goblins drop by the arena Saturday morning.

Canskate is cancelled Monday, October 31st so everyone can go and show off their costumes door-to-door, and get more treats. Maybe some will dress as their favourite skater.

That pretty much sums up what’s happening in October for our club. More details can be found on our website.

Remember, skate great and have fun!

Junior B Lions split games

Morrisburg Junior B Lions coach Thom Racine sees the St. Lawrence Division as one that could develop into two tiers and to keep that from happening he says his Lions have to get tougher.

After a weekend that saw the Lions start strong with a 7-2 win over the Char-Lan Rebels on home ice Friday night, and then fall victim to the Glens in Alexandria, 7-1, Sunday, Racine says “I think we were a little intimidated by them (Glens). They are a big physical team, and we didn’t have the match for them.”

“We have to get tougher, and I have to find a way to motivate them on the physical side of things. They have to learn to play tough, and they have to have each other’s back. They talk about how the game has changed, but intimidation is still there.”

Friday night, the 7-2 win gave the Lions a good start to the weekend.

They scored their first goal, on the first shot of their first shift in the first 10 seconds of the match when Ryan Ward (from Clarke Veenstra) put the puck past Rebels goaltender Robbie Chapman.

“Scoring nine seconds into a game usually works well,” said Racine and work well it did.

Clarke Veenstra gave the Lions a two-goal lead at 9:02 of the frame with help from Alex Steingruber and Ward, and Ryan Dunbar made it 3-0 with help from Marc Antoine Kamel at 12:18.

The Rebels got one back from Quinlin MacDonell at 14:08 to cut the gap to 3-1.

In the second period “Michael Poapst (from Sylvester Bzdyl) got his first goal of the season to get the monkey off his back,” said Racine.

The 4-1 Lions lead carried well into the third period until Tyler Filion counted for the Rebels at 9:10.

“When they made it 4-2, that old nervousness started to come back,” said Racine recalling the number of times last year, the Lions collapsed to give up a lead and settle for a disappointing loss.

This time out however, the Lions held on, and an unassisted Brayden Girard goal at 15:58 ended the jitters and put them back on track.

“Brayden is a great skater, and he doesn’t score many goals. So when he goes in and scores a goal it is huge,” said Racine.

Seeing his first full game, was rookie goaltender Ryan Cooper. “Ryan played well,” said Racine. “He was promised that game as a start and he played well.”

Charged up by the Girard goal, the Lions finished it off with goals from Clarke Veenstra (from Steingruber) and Lance Hodgson (from Michael Paquette) for the 7-2 win, their second of the young season.

Then on Sunday, the Lions were on the road to Alexandria where they managed only one goal against the Glens from Lance Hodgson (Brayden Girard and Zach Seguin) early in the second period.

They held the Glens to a 1-0 first period lead, but fell behind 2-0, 2:38 into the second period. Hodgson’s goal at 3:15 kept it close at 2-1. Just over a minute later, the Glens upped it to 3-1, and they stretched it with a short-handed goal at 18:27 of the frame.

Three unanswered third period goals gave them the 7-1 win.

“We were hanging in,” says Racine. “We were 2-1 in the second period, then a mistake and before you know it you are down a couple of goals.”

“The three goals, in three minutes, in the third period put us away.”

Also hurting in the effort was a short bench. The Veenstras were unable to make the game, and Michel Thurler was sitting out his second game of a six game suspension.

Racine was relieved that Steingruber was in the lineup after he was injured the week before.

Racine is looking forward to playing at full strength, sooner rather than later.

“We are trying to be a skilled team with four lines, but we haven’t been able to ice that (full) team yet.”

Coming up this weekend, the Lions are in Winchester against the Hawks Friday night, October 7 for an 8:15 p.m. start. Sunday, October 9, they host the Alexandria Glens at 2:30 p.m.

The Casselman Vikings and the Glens are currently tied for the St. Lawrence Division top spot with 12 points each, both with six wins and one loss.

The Winchester Hawks have nine points on four wins, one loss and one tie, and the Lions have four points on a pair of wins.

Akwesasne has one tie and Char-Lan is still looking for their first point of the season.

Sweet Cherry Wine, drinks to ‘champion’ success at Trillium

Although they knew they had a good pony on their hands, they didn’t know how good she really is.

They found out on the weekend of September 8-11.

That’s when four Sarabeau Stable riders and their ponies competed at the Trillium Provincial Equestrian Championship at Caledon Equestrian Park at Palgrave, Ontario, and while “everybody did amazing, and everyone had good rounds,” it was Sweet Cherry Wine who stole the show.

Owned and ridden by Rayanna Marcellus in the Medium Pony Division, Sweet Cherry Wine was judged overall champion thanks to some really good rides.

On her first day, Sweet Cherry placed eighth and 10th, over fences. Day two saw her finish first and second over fences and third on flat. The combined points gave her the overall ‘medium pony’ championship.

“It’s a tough competition,” said Sarabeau Stable trainer Cheryl Levere. “There are a lot of horses there that compete at top level shows. We are just doing a little local circuit.”

“Sweet Cherry’s two rounds were absolutely amazing. I was able to watch 10 others go and none of them compared to Sweet Cherry’s rounds.”

While the competition is judged on the horses, Levere credits Marcellus for her part in the win. “It’s purely judged on the horse. However, it’s an overall picture, and you have to have a good rider.”

Also riding at the Trillium were Courtney Casselman on Piccolini, Julie Julien on Palakari and Josee Marleau Vallieres on Sentimental Journey. In addition, Marcellus rode Short Notice in Small Pony and Picco in B Equitation.

“It was a great learning experience for all of them,” said Levere. “They all had amazing rounds and you have to remember that none of them had ever done anything like this before. They all stepped up. It was a great first year for Sarabeau. Every year is going to get better. They all know what to expect now.”

Sarabeau Stable owner Sandy Marcellus (Rayanna’s mom) was extremely proud of the riders and the horses, particularly Sweet Cherry Wine.

“We knew she was a good pony, but for us to have a champion pony is fantastic. We were up against a lot of big barns and there was a lot of competition there. Every division had between 35 and 50 riders. It’s great.”

Lions lose to Hawks in home opener

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions played their first regular season game on home ice, Sunday, for a start that coach Thom Racine says was disappointing.

After falling behind the visiting Winchester Hawks early on, the Lions managed to pull out of the first period behind by just two goals (4-2).

They got it together in the second period, with back-to-back counters early on to even it, but that was it.

The Hawks added two goals in the second and another three in the third to claim a 9-4 win.

“We really responded in the second period and tied it up, but then we forgot who we were playing,” said coach Racine. “You can’t give the puck away and make mental errors against the best team in the league.”

“In the third period we were skating with them, but then we had one of those kind of errors I am trying to cut down on.”

“Winchester is a good team. They are physical and don’t get me wrong, they played very well. They are a veteran team and they know how to intimidate.”

The Hawks went up 4-2 in the first period on goals by Evan Walker, Graham Loyst, Paul Bernard-Corbeil and Josh Stubbings.

The Lions answered with goals by Ryan Ward (unassisted) and Alex Steingruber (on the power play from Clarke Veenstra and Francis Roberge).

Rookie Lion, Ryan Dunbar got it rolling in the second period with the first junior B goal of his career from Marc Antoine Kamel and Brayden Girard.

According to Racine, the goal and resulting celebration didn’t sit well with Hawks’ defenceman Paul Bernard-Corbeil whose blow to Dunbar resulted in a match penalty.

“Ryan left the game, but he came back.”

The Lions also took advantage of the five minute penalty with Steingruber scoring on the power play from Ryan Ward and Clarke Veenstra to tie the game 4-4.

That however, was it for the Lions. The Hawks got two more from Stubbings and Loyst (short-handed) to end the second period in the lead 6-4.

Stubbings, Brock Burge and Evan Walker made it a 9-4 Hawks win.

Mikael Dion started in net for the Lions and after 7:30 was relieved by Ryan Cooper.

“We didn’t get the goaltending and Mikael knew it,” said Racine. “He was fine with being yanked. Ryan did a good job going in, in relief. For his first taste of Junior B action, I thought he was good.”

Unfortunately, Racine says he may have lost Steingruber for a couple of weeks with an injury. “It’s a huge loss if we lose him for any length of time. He’s a great player.”

Racine says the loss on their home ice was tough for the Lions, but “I expect them to learn from their mistakes. It was a quiet dressing room after the game, and I let them wallow in it for a couple of minutes. They were disappointed.”

This week the Lions are preparing to take on the Char-Lan Rebels in Morrisburg, Friday night (September 30) at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, they are on the road to Alexandria to take on the Glens at 2:30 p.m.
