Two games into their round-robin playoff setup and the Dundas County Girls Bantam House team is looking very solid.

The girls got it rolling on Saturday, March 3 in Kemptville, with a 3-2 win, an effort that required a major comeback after they trailed the Storm 2-0 in the first period.

Then in game two, back on home ice on Sunday, they posted a 4-0 victory over Clarence/Rockland with Emma Pintal in net for the shutout.

Saturday in Kemptville, the Storm went up 2-0 in the first period on goals by Clea Spencer and Katie Craig.

Marcy Smith answered with one for Dundas in the second period to tighten the count to 2-1. Smith was assisted by Ally Weegar and Janis Hall.

Midway into the third period, Kalleigh Young, assisted by Lauryn Henry, tied the game 2-2.

The winning goal came seconds later from Cassandra Young, assisted by Paige Morris and Young. 

Dundas counted two goals late in the first period against Clarence/Rockland on Sunday and never looked  back as they added singles in the second and third periods for the 4-0 win.

Janis Hall got it rolling with the two first period goals, the first assisted by Smith and Anna Gruich and the second unassisted.

Smith counted in the second period with Hall providing the assist and Paige Morris finished it off with help from Molly Garlough.

Dundas will play two more games (all teams in the league play four playoff games). The top two teams after the four games then move on to the Championship Day set for Kemptville on March 31.

Game three for Dundas is scheduled for Saturday, March 17 in Smiths Falls. Their final home game will be played in Chesterville on Tuesday, March 20 at 8:30 p.m. against Outaouis.

The men’s and ladies’ teams, representing the Morrisburg Golf Club in the Ottawa Valley Golf Association’s Intersectional Match play have stalled in their respective divisions

For the third consecutive year, the men’s and ladies intersectional teams have finished in second spot, the ladies to remain in Division K and the Men to remain in Division O.

This past week, each of the teams hosted their leg of the Matches. Last Monday, July 9 the ladies finished in second spot behind Eagle Creek, the latter earning 41 points out of a possible 42 while the Morrisburg entry picked up 25.

Intersectional match play involves teams of seven players each with golfers from four clubs at each level. Each team member plays a match against the three opposing clubs and each has the potential of six points.

For Eagle Creek, it was almost a clean sweep. The only golfer who stood in their way was Lori Ann Davies of Morrisburg who collected a single point from her Eagle Creek player, Kendra Read.

Davies led the Morrisburg entry with five points, while Anita Cooper, Linda Barclay, Judy Laurin, Stephanie Cochrane and Monique Patenaude all added four points. Carolyn Weegar and Vicki Boivin contributed two points apiece.

The other two teams competing in the level K division were from Poplar Grove and the Iroquois Golf Club.

Nelly Leightizer led the Iroquois entry with four points, while Sally O’Brien and Betty Locke contributed two points apiece, and Majorie Lapier and Mary Jean Craig collected one point each.

The Morrisburg men’s club hosted their action on Sunday with just three clubs competing.

Finishing in first place for the right to move up a division in next year’s play was Falcon Ridge with 32 points.

Morrisburg was second with 21 and Rideau Glen in third with seven. (The men’s teams consist of  10 players each).

Larry Cooper, Ron Lapier and Robert Mann collected four points apiece for Morrisburg, while Jordie MacDonald, Gary Breyer, Kirk Barkley and Brian McNairn added two points each. Eric Wemerman collected a single point and Charlie Moore and Lee Beaupre were blanked.

The Intersectionals are ladder type events with the winner moving up a rung, second place having to host the next year’s event and last place dropping down a rung. The object is to climb to the top rung.

Because their second place finishes were the third in a row for the two Morrisburg teams, neither will have to host next year.

On Monday June 18th the Seaway Kickers U18 girl’s soccer team hosted the Nepean Hotspurs. 

It was the Hotspurs who had handed the Kickers their only loss of the season in an early match and Seaway was looking for a big win. And it was a big win they got, by a 4-0 count.

Ashley Smith got it rolling when she picked up a rebound off a save by the Nepean keeper. Smith made a good pass to Sarah Gudlaugsson who scored into the open net. 

After a good defensive play, Leah Wells passed the ball through to Kaitlyn Geurkink who scored bottom left corner. 

The third goal was a great individual effort by Kaitlyn Geurkink, who had a nice run up the left side and surprised the Nepean keeper with a strong left foot shot. 

Mid-fielder Kaitlyn Merkley had a nice pass and setup for Jessica Hartle, but she just couldn’t finish. 

The final goal of the game came off a Nepean goal kick which was intercepted by Lesley-Ann Tupper who dangled around the defence and scored through the keeper’s legs. 

The Kickers had very nice passes and controlled the ball well. Emily Vanveen was strong on the free kicks, and Keepers Jade Millward and Kailyn Douglas earned the shutout.

Next game is June 25th, at 6:30 p.m. in Iroquois at Seaway High School.
