Curling Chatter-Off to a new fresh start

Another curling season at the Morrisburg Curling Club is well under way.

First, there are a couple of things to mention. For those who haven’t made it inside the club this fall, you’re in for a treat! Thanks to our executive for a beautiful makeover.

The handicapped washroom on the ground floor, the carpeting job, the repositioned and improved bar, the extra space we seem to have developed in the lounge, new doors, and the beautiful new ramp at the entrance are some of the many assets to our old club.

Our thanks to the Ontario Trillium grant, which helped make many of the improvements possible.

New windows behind the former bar area, as well as an entirely new wall there, granite counters for the new bar and the kitchen window, a new paint job, and our usual fine ice preparation have gotten us off to a fine start.

We missed some final news from last April. It was the senior men’s championship. Jack Barkley, Karl Duncan, Sam Laurin and Robert Martin dropped their first match to Sid Morrell, Ron Beaupre, Bud Perry and Gerald Thompson.

Also on April 3, Pete Zeran, Len Bellamy, Keith Robinson and Jim Millard dropped their first one in a tight match to Wally McDonald, Glen Cougler, Earl Jeacle and Larry Ware.

On April 5th, the ‘B’ division final saw the Zeran team win out over Jack Barkley’s foursome, taking 3rd and 4th place respectively. Curling beside them, the Morrell quartet and Wally McDonald’s team battled hard in the ‘A’ final, with Sid victorious again, and Wally finishing second.

Congratulations to all, with the Morrell team getting their names on the Fraser trophy! It was a beautiful finish to an active season. Thanks for getting the details to us.

The new bonspiel season is under way, with a team of ladies in Kemptville last week for their ten-team bonspiel. It was a one-game affair, and our ladies played Carleton Heights. The Ottawa team pulled off the win, and everyone was dressed in witches’ costumes, with prizes for all. Our curlers were Greta McGann, Cheryl Thompson, Yvonne Mabo and Linda Murphy. Good start to the season, folks!

With the 2013-14 season, we have, as always, some new curlers, and some who have dropped out. We hope that those who have retired from the game will come in to watch and visit with the others. Curling began on the week of the 15th. It wasn’t possible to schedule the ‘swing and sweep’ this year, but there will be a number of club bonspiels through the year. Stay tuned.

For those who haven’t yet registered, see the senior men’s coordinator, Dave King, for the afternoon curling, or Alice Thompson for the women’s Tuesday afternoon league.

Joe McCooeye is looking after the Tuesday night men’s league again, as they do battle for the Calvert Trophy. The Thursday morning league is again being handled by Ruth Kelly, the Thursday night competitive curlers by Ian Wilson, and the Friday night league by Mahlon Locke.

Information re outside bonspiels is posted as it comes in, and we will have a number of local ones: the first Two Person ‘Spiel will be announced shortly, the Stick ‘Spiel, coordinated by Glenn Cougler, will be held on Wed., Nov. 13, the Alzheimer’s Bonspiel on Sat. Nov. 23, and the Women’s Invitational on Tues., Dec. 3rd.

Also, we need two teams for the Gamble Mixed Bonspiel on Nov. 16 in Russell.

    Good curling to all!

Hawks, Wolves collect wins from Lions

The Morrisburg Lions handled a pair of losses in Eastern Ontario Junior B  Hockey action this past week, an 8-5 loss in the Hawks nest Saturday night, and a 7-4 loss to the hungry Wolves in Morrisburg on Sunday.

The Lions have been on a rocky road since the season began in September and have registered just one win in 14 St. Lawrence Division games.

Saturday night, the Hawks led 2-0 after the first period and 6-0 heading into the third.

The Lions got on board 1:13 into the third period with an unassisted Michael Paquette goal.

The Lions then went on to win the third period, 5-2, but it was too little, too late.

Scoring for the Lions in the third period against Hawks goaltender Brandon Lowery were Paquette, Taylor Eamon, Alex Kidd, Chris Pearson and Christian Leger.

Sunday afternoon in Morrisburg, the Lions held their own in the first two periods.

The Wolves went up 1-0 in the first period, but the Lions charged back in the second with counters from Chris Pearson and Michael Paquette to go up 2-1.

The Wolves evened it 2-2 at 12:29 of the frame, and the tie held until early in the third period.

That’s when the Wolves turned it up a notch for two quick goals at 2:36 and 3:35.

Christian Leger cut the gap to 4-3 at 6:17, but again the Wolves charged back with two goals, now to stretch their lead to 6-3.

Paquette got the Lions final counter in the last minute of play, and the Wolves flipped one more into the empty Lions net for the 7-4 win.

Coming up this week, the Lions host the division’s first place Casselman Vikings, Saturday night, November 2. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Jr. B Lions nab first win

MORRISBURG–Coming off a tough 4-2 loss to the Metcalfe Jets in the Fall Classic played at the Glengarry Sports Palace, the Morrisburg Lions turned it around here Saturday night on home ice, to finally, after 11 games, register their first win of the season.

The 5-4 win was against the visiting Brockville Tikis and was a come from behind effort which saw the Lions trailing 2-0 after the first period.

A strong three-goal, second period got them back on track and put them in the lead, 3-2.

Christian Leger, on the Lions power play, got it rolling just 2:13 into the frame with help from  Eric Evans and Chris Pearson.

Liam Morrow (from Pearson and Michael Paquette) tied the game, 2-2, at 4:02 and then at 7:17 Paquette pushed the Lions ahead with help from Pearson and Dallas Blacksmith.

The Lions couldn’t hold on and the Tikis nabbed Lions goaltender John Gilmer for one more to end the second period even at 2-2.

Then 3:04 into the third period, Patrick Rock reclaimed the lead for the Tikis, but the Lions didn’t let up.

Less than one minute later, Liam Morrow tied it 4-4 (Paquette and Alex Kidd assisting), and that is the way it stayed for the next 13 minutes of action.

Then at 17:30 veteran Lion, Michael Paquette collected the winning goal giving the Lions their first win of the season.

Assisting Paquette for the winner was Blacksmith and Eric Evans.

A total of 64 minutes in penalties were handed out. The Tikis counted their two first period goals on their power play.

John Gilmer faced 34 Tikis shots while Mack Frere handled the loss against 40 Lions shots.

Friday night at the Glengarry Sports Palace, the Metcalfe Jets and the Morrisburg Lions opened the annual Fall Classic, the Jets claiming a 4-2 win.

The Jets went up 1-0 in the first period and increased it to 2-0 early in the second.

Taylor Eamon put the Lions on the board at 6:28 of the frame  with help from Chris Evans and Robbie Scott, but that was it until the final five minutes.

Chad Robillard restored the Jets’ two goal edge at 15:08 of the second, but Eamon came charging back for his second of the night to close the gap to 3-2.

A highly entertaining third period followed with Joel Cunningham scoring the insurance goal against Lions’ goalie Brandon Chilton at 15:45.

A total of 50 minutes in penalties were assessed. The Jets counted once in five power-play opportunities while the Lions were unsuccessful in seven power plays.

Coming up this weekend, the Lions are in Winchester, Saturday night, October 26 for a 7:30 p.m. start. Sunday they are at home to Akwesasne. Game time is 2:30.

Major Midget Lions double Demons 4-2

WINCHESTER – After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the South Dundas Major Midget B Lions turned it around here Monday night (October 21) to claim a 4-2 win over the North Dundas Demons.

The Demons went up 1-0 in the first period on a Patrick Gibson goal assisted by Spencer Carruthers, and that was it until the Lions regrouped in the second.

Nash Nesbitt got it rolling just a little over one minute into the second period with help from Trey Suddard.

The 1-1 tie held until the final minute of the frame when Jordan Smail struck to put the Lions up by one with help from Riley Black.

The game remained close, and although the Lions carried the majority of the play, they had trouble staying out of the penalty box in the third period.

That provided the stage for a Demons power play goal from Gibson (his second) which tied the game 2-2.

Then the Lions took over.

Smail added his second of the game (again with help from Riley Black), to give the Lions a 3-2 lead with 2:59 left on the clock.

Thirty-six seconds later, Evan Mullin (assisted by Riley Barry) beat Demons goaltender Cashelle Baldwin for the insurance.

The game ended with 1:13 remaining on the clock (game running time had expired).

Josh Martineau was in net for the Lions win.

The  Midget B Lions are at home to Alexandria tonight, Wednesday, October 23. Game time is 8 p.m.

Lions in it, but can’t hang on

MORRISBURG –Despite being in both of their games for a good portion of the 60 minutes, the Morrisburg Lions were still unable to put a stroke in their win column in Eastern Ontario Junior (B) Hockey League action this past week.

The Lions, along with their five counterparts in the St. Lawrence Division, played cross-over action with the Rideau Division this week, and in all but four of the 11 games, the St. Lawrence Division teams were successful.

In the four unsuccessful games, the Lions accounted for two, a 3-0 loss to the Tikis in Brockville Wednesday night, October 9 and an 8-4 loss to the Westport Rideaus on Morrisburg ice, Saturday, October 12.

The Akwesasne Wolves accounted for the division’s third loss, to the Prescott Flyers 3-2, and the Alexandria Glens and the Athens Aeros played to a 4-4 draw.

The Lions now find themselves in the St. Lawrence Division’s basement position, two points behind the Akwesasne Wolves who picked up their first win of the season Saturday night,  3-1 over Gananoque.

At Brockville last Wednesday night, the Lions hung on until well into the third period when they gave up two goals in less than one minute (the first to the Tikis power play) in the 3-0 loss.

Dylan Casselman counted for Brockville late in the first period, and that was it until 7:28 of the third when Tanner Casselman struck on the Tikis power play to up their advantage to 2-0. Less than one minute later Tanner Benton made it 3-0, and Tikis goaltender Nathan Peters held on for the shut out.

John Gilmer was in the Lions net for the loss. He gave up the three goals on 26 Tikis shots, while the Lions were unable to put any of their 35 shots past Peters.

The game saw a total of 98 minutes in penalties handed out, 66 of them to the Lions on eight minors, three 10 minute majors and two misconducts. The Tikis capitalized on one of five power-play opportunities.

Again in Morrisburg on Saturday night, the Lions kept pace with the Rideaus, but again a couple of quick goals (less than one minute apart in the third period) was their undoing.

After first period action, they trailed the Rideaus by just one goal (3-2), and at the end of 40 minutes they were still just one goal back at 4-3.

Goals were traded early in the third period when Alex Szabo put the Rideaus up 5-3 at 6:03 and Dallas Blacksmith (from Brandon Mullin) answered on the Lions power play at 7:46.

Then, the Rideaus took charge scoring two goals at 830 and 9:21. They added one more at 16:58 for the 8-4 win.

Scoring for the Lions were Peter Ketcheson (from Mullin), Alex Kidd (unassisted), Christian Leger (from Tyler Young and Michael Paquette) and Dallas Blacksmith (from Mullin).

Brandon Chilton was in the Lions net for the loss, and Spencer Emery collected the Westport win.  Chilton faced 50 Rideaus shots, while the Lions managed just 22 against Emery.

A total of 58 penalty minutes were assessed, the Lions collecting 27 minutes on six minors, a five minute fighting major and a 10 minute misconduct. The Rideaus were assessed eight minor penalties and the corresponding fighting penalties.

Coming up this weekend is the annual “Fall Classic” Games which will see 11 hockey games played from Friday night, October 18 through Sunday, October 20 at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria.

The Lions will see opening game action, Friday night at 6:15 p.m. against the Metcalfe Jets. The Clarence Castors and Casselman Vikings will tangle following the Lions game at 8:45.

Action will resume Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m. when the Stittsville Royals and the Winchester Hawks hit the ice. Five games will be played on Saturday and another four on Sunday. Sunday’s action starts at 9:45 a.m. with a game between the Ottawa Junior Canadians and the Char-Lan Rebels.

Admission is $10 (all day passes) for adults and children 12 and under, $5.

By the end of the weekend all of the 22 teams in the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League, (featuring two conferences, the Rideau/St. Lawrence in the south and the Metro/Valley in the north) will have seen action in the “Fall Classic” event.

Jr. B Lions still looking for a win

MORRISBURG – Despite being in every game and having the opportunity to rack up some marks in the win column, the Morrisburg Junior B Lions are still looking for that elusive first victory.

Five games into the regular season, the Lions have just one point for a tie against the Char-Lan Rebels. This past weekend, they were in Winchester, Friday night, where they lost a close one to the St. Lawrence Division’s first place Winchester Hawks, 3-2. Then Saturday night, on home ice, they gave it up to the Alexandria Glens, 8-6, after holding a 4-1 advantage early in the second period.

“Friday night in Winchester, was an excellent hockey game,” said Lions general manager, Kevin Casselman.  “It was a great game. We had plenty of opportunities to have won it. The boys worked really hard and played with discipline.”

“Although we lost, we were pleased with the work ethic. If we continue like this, good things will happen.”

The Hawks went up 1-0 at 12:43 of the first period on an Austin Rothe goal. Just 1:28 into the second period, Wyatt Coghill made it 2-0.

The Lions got one back at 2:10 of the second from Christian Leger (Brandon Mullin and Dallas Blacksmith), and that’s how it stayed until 17:24 when Shawn Simms pushed it to 3-1.

At 7:29 Peter Ketcheson scored, unassisted, while the Lions were short-handed, but that was it. The Hawks held on for the 3-2 win.

Brandon Lowry was in the Hawks net for the win, and John Gilmer handled the loss. The Hawks had 36 shots on net, while the Lions answered with 32.

A total of 60 minutes in penalties were handed out. The Lions sat out four minors and one 10 minute misconduct, while the Hawks were nabbed for six minors and three, 10-minute misconducts.

Saturday night in Morrisburg, there was a big offensive assault from both sides with the Glens recovering from a 4-1 deficit early in the second period to skate to an 8-6 win.

“Hopefully, we learned something from the game,” said Casselman. “That being, a lead, any lead can disappear quickly when you get off the game plan and revert back to playing as individuals and playing without discipline.”

“We took too many undisciplined penalties, and the Glens took advantage and gained the momentum.”

“We did re-group and tied the game in the third (6-6 tie at 10:02).”

Bradley Gabbour put the Glens on the scoreboard at 13:15 of the first period. After that, the Lions took over starting with a goal from Brandon Mullin.

Two power play goals, from Dan Fyckes and Eric Evans, gave the Lions a 3-1 advantage heading into the second period.

Isaac Brownlee put them up 4-1, just 3:21 into the second.

Former Lion, Michel Lefebvre started the Glens’ comeback when he beat Lions goaltender Brandon Chilton at 7:05. Glens’ goals followed from Yan Belec at 11:08, Simon Besner at 15:21 on the Glens power play (tied it 4-4) and T.J. Burns at 15:59.

Early in the third, Brandon Barillaro made it 6-4 for the Glens.

The Lions got back into it with quick goals from Eric Evans 9:19 and Alex Kidd 10:02 to even the playing field at 6-6.

But they couldn’t keep it going.

Bradley Gabbour counted what would be the winner for the Glens at 14:06, and Charlie McKoewn added the insurance just over a minute later.

“We have a young club and emotions and adrenaline can rise quickly,” said Casselman. “Every game is a learning curve for these young players.  The season is still young, and we aren’t panicking. We had the opportunity to earn four points on the weekend.”

Brandon Chilton was in the Lions net for the loss while Pat Nadeau picked up the win for the Glens. The Lions were out shot 42-27. Ninety-six minutes in penalties were assessed. The Glens were successful in two out of eight power play opportunities while the Lions scored twice on their power play in four opportunities.

Coming up Saturday, October 5, the Lions are on the road to Char-Lan for an 8 p.m. match. Sunday, October 6, they are at home to the Casselman Vikings. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

The Vikings are in second place in the St. Lawrence Division, one point behind the first place Hawks.

300 students participate in Seaway’s Sports Day

Seaway District High School’s second annual Sports Day on Friday, September 27, proved to be even more successful than its first with 300 of the school’s 400 students participating in an assortment of activities and the annual Terry Fox Run/Walk.

Seaway’s Sports Day on Friday, kicked off with an assembly and the school’s annual Terry Fox Run/Walk.

“I was very impressed with out students’ participation in this year’s Terry Fox Rally and Seaway Day of Sports,” said SDHS Principal Terry Gardiner. “I asked a number of students to speak to the entire student body about who they were walking for during our Terry Fox Rally, and it was very touching. I think it set the tone for the day.”

“Our Director of Education, David Thomas, was present for our Terry Fox Rally at the beginning of the day and gave a very heartfelt address to staff and students. He had high praise for our efforts to support the Terry Fox Foundation.”

“This is my favourite day of the school year,” said Gardiner. “Terry Fox is my hero and, as principal, I get a chance to draw the line between Terry’s generosity and perseverance and what we try to teach our students every day about good character.”

Following the Terry Fox Walk, some 300 plus Seaway students hit the fields, the courts, the diamonds and the water to participate in Seaway’s second Annual Sports Day.

Students were provided the opportunity to select two sports/activities from a huge list…some opting to go with their favourite sports while others trying something new. Activities included kayaking/canoeing, bowling, kick-boxing, soccer, softball, cycling, tennis, golf, badminton, ball hockey, trailer park games and a nature hike.

Sports day is a huge event that requires a lot of planning and organization. “Sharon Last, Heather Thompson and Maggie Perry were invaluable in the planning process,” said organizer Trevor Thompson. In addition, a huge number of Seaway staff/teachers are on board, running and overseeing the activities/sports that they personally specialize in.

“Yes, kids did try new activities…canoeing had a larger group than last year,” said Thompson. “Some were eager to cycle the 60 km route with only one student not finishing and that was due to a mechanical failure. A great day was had by all staff and students.”

“I think we will be looking at doing a winter version of the sports day in February.”

Thompson was also excited that Director Thomas had stopped in at the school, to participate in the Terry Fox portion of the day, and learn more about Seaway’s Sports Day.
