Forty-six women welcomed the first real blast of hot summertime weather on Wednesday evening, July 3 for their weekly night sponsored by Brister Group.

The game played was “How close can you get’ with hidden scores created for each hole through a pick from the hat. The players got one point for each score away from the hidden hole score. 

Players with the least points were Paula Locke, Lise Steinburg and Sharon Annable with 18 point totals. Way off base with 356 points was Betty Lou Casselman.

A total of 80 men were out for men’s night on Thursday, July 4 with Lance Lepage leading the field with a 32 for the low gross in A flight. Charlie Moore won B flight with a 39 and Bob Barclay won C with a 44.

Net winners were Lindsay Weegar in A flight, Jim Annable in B and Gus Dickson in C.

Closest to the pin winners were Jeff Barclay on the par three fifth hole and Doug McNairn on the par three eighth.

The evening was sponsored by Harland Veinotte Transport.

The weather has finally cooperated and the remaining sod for the second green and the area around the putting surface on the third hole is in place and doing well. The sod for the  new green on the number three hole was laid several weeks ago, and has mended really well.

Morrisburg Golf Club members are now looking forward to the upcoming club championship tournament to be played the weekend of July 20-21. In August, the men will host their annual Men’s Open on Saturday, August 10 which was moved from its usual June date to August due to the green construction on the second and third holes.

Greg and Loretta Vandellan kicked off the month of July with a hot round on a hot night that saw them shoot a 33 to win the weekly Tuesday Night Scramble (July 3) at the Cedar Glen Golf Course. The evening’s low net winners were Bill and Connie Collins.

With the great summer weather still cooperating on Wednesday, July 3, Chris Yelle and Cory Witteveen stepped to the tee for the longest drives of the night. Yelle won long drive for the combined A/B flight, while Witteveen was the longest shooter in the C/D flight category.

The remaining ladies night winners were selected by draw.

Thursday night, Kurtis Barkley led the Men’s Night field on Cedar Glen’s back nine with a 37 for the low gross in A flight. Duane Young posted a 40 to win B flight’s low gross, while Byron Brunt won C with a 43. The low gross shooter in D flight was Steve Wells with a 50.

Net winners were J.P. St. Pierre in A flight, George Bloom in B flight and Bob Porteous in C flight.

The long drive hitter was David Casselman, while the closest to the hole winners were George Bloom on the par three 12th, and Duane Young on the part three 15th.

Coming up, members of the Cedar Glen Golf Club are preparing for their club championships on July 20-21.

The annual Memorial Day tournament was played on a rainy Sunday, July 7. Taking home this year’s win was the mixed team that included Bruce and Sharon Whitteker and Barry and Janice Casselman. The men’s team win went to Lyle Schell, Mitch Hutt, James Morrell and Billy DeJong.

On June 8th, 2013, at the ODHA Annual General Meeting, a motion was passed by the delegates to change the name of the “Ottawa and District Hockey Association” to “Hockey Eastern Ontario”, commencing July 1, 2013. 

The name change will become more consistent with what is used by the other Branches across Canada; it will clearly define the area serviced and will provide for increased marketability and branding opportunities.

The Ottawa and District Hockey Association was founded in 1920, by Captain Edward Archibald, and is one of thirteen Branches of Hockey Canada. 

The participant base consists of associations, leagues, players, coaches, trainers, officials, and volunteers. The ODHA has jurisdiction over that part of Ontario lying East of, and including the counties of Lanark, Renfrew, and all of Leeds (except the town of Gananoque and the portion of Highway No. 32 and south of Highway No.15 in the Province of Ontario. 

The ODHA is the voice of all its members and participants at the Hockey Canada level. As a not-for-profit organization, the ODHA is guided by a Board of Directors.

The objectives of the Association are: To promote and improve the sport of Amateur Hockey within the territory under its control; To secure the enforcement of the rules of the game as adopted by the ODHA; To conduct elimination competition for the different Association Champions as well as Challenges for

Inter-Branch and Canadian Championships; To adjudicate on all questions arising from and pertaining to Amateur Hockey within this Branch of Hockey Canada

A new logo depicting the name change will be produced, and unveiled at a later date.

The Seaway Kickers U13 Mixed team extended their undefeated season record to 7-0 at the Merkley Soccer Fields in Iroquois June 27, with a shutout over Nepean City’s M4 team.

Scoring started early in the first half with a one-timer in the corner by Oakley Beavers making it 1-0 Seaway. 

Less than five minutes later, Aaron Tibben planted a goal past Nepean City’s goalie, 2-0 Seaway.

Still in the first half, Beavers landed his second of the night on the Nepean City net, 3-0 Seaway. 

Devin Dumoulin and David Swerdfeger also scored making it 5-0 at half-time. 

Nepean City’s change in goalies at half-time ended Seaway’s scoring run. However, Nepean could not get a rally started in the second half. 

Final score for the game, Seaway Kickers 5, Nepean City 0. Travis McInnis and Oakley Beavers shared the shutout. They face Nepean City’s M3 team on July 4, in Iroquois. Game start will be at 6:30 p.m.

Seaway Kickers U15 Girls defeat Nepean Hotspurs

NEPEAN – The Seaway Kickers U15 Girls team visited the Nepean Hotspurs June 26 at l’école secondaire publique Omer-Deslauriers in Nepean. 

Final game score was Seaway Kickers 3, Nepean Hotspurs 1. 

Goals were scored by Julia Paulino and Jessica Ferguson (two). Courtney Moreau was goalie for the game. 

The U15 Girls host Nepean City’s G1 team July 3, before playing three games in Ottawa on July 6.

The South Dundas Minor program continues every Saturday morning with the 450 players that started the season on May 25 now well on their way to their World Cup Finale planned for July 26-27.

The ladies night on Wednesday, June 26 was decided by draw. Closest to the pin winners were Ann Cook on the par three sixth hole and Sheila Bush on the par 3 ninth.

On Wednesday, June 19, it was Cheryl Lowe leading the way with a 44 to claim the A flight low gross prize while close behind was Lynne Shaw with a 46. A flight net winners were Sheila Bush and Pat Reaney.

In B flight, it was Christina Yelle with the win thanks to a 45, while Barb Barkley zeroed in on the low net win. Sandra Julien posted a 55 for the win in C flight, and Jane Hess was the top D flight shooter with a 62. Cory Witteveen scored the low net in C flight. Closest to the pin shots were made by Gerry McEwan on the par three sixth hole and Sue McMillan on the par three ninth.

Dave Bird fired a 36, at Men’s night on Thursday, June 27 for the low gross in a Flight. He narrowly edged out Rick Barkley with a 37.

Jeff Whitteker and Harold Chalker tied for the low gross in B with 40s, while Darwin Bird also counted a 40, his to win low gros in C flight. A 57 carded by Allan Crowder was the low for the evening in D flight.

Net winners were Lonnie McIntosh in A flihgt, George Bloom in B, and Byron Brunt in C.

Jeff Byvels and Jeff Taylor dropped the closest to the pin shots  on the part three sixth and ninth holes respectively and David Casselman had the long drive.

In men’s action on Thursday, June 20, Kurtis Barkley led the field with a 36. Jeff Whitteker was the now shooter in B flight with a 41 and Liam Morrow shot a 44 to win C flight. The first low gross prize in D flight was claimed by Josh Freak. Net winners were Greg Vandellan in A flight, Mitch Hutt in B and Ron Rutley in C.

The week kicked off at the Morrisburg Golf Course with the weekly ladies night on Wednesday, sponsored by Lloya and Dwayne Sprague at the Morrisburg Home Hardware Store.

The biggest crowd of the ladies night season was on hand last Wednesday, and says club captain Monique Patenaude, “everyone had a wonderful time.” 

The evening game was “the closest”… Closest to the chipping basket on the 10th hole won by Deanna Cassell, Closest to the hole on 14 won by Barb McWhinnie, Closest to the line on 16 won by Lillian Noon and closest to the pin from off the green on 18 won by Brenda Stitt.

In men’s night action on Thursday Brian McNairn and Greg Millard led the field of 71 golfers with 71s.

McNairn’s 71 gave him the low gross in A flight, while Millard claimed the low gross prize in B flight. Right on their heels was Ken Rundle who posted a 38 to win C flight.

Net winners were Shawn Hummel in A flight, Jeff Cassell in B and Al Graham in C.

Millard won closest to the pin on the par three 14th hole and Rob Murphy won closest to the hole on the par three 17th.

The evening was sponsored by Bill Barclay and Brister Insurance.

A small crowd of just 38 women attended the weekly Wednesday night Ladies Night on June 19, but a good time was had by all. 

After a regular evening of play with great weather finally, the ladies took their evening game to the ninth hole to decide this week’s prize winners.

The game called for the wearing of a pair of silicone oven mitts to drive and a pair of regular oven mitts for putting…a new fashion in golf clubs which completely eliminated any possibility of an interlocking grip says club captain Monique Patenaude. 

The low score winner in A flight was Brenda Stitt with a par 4 with one putt, while Barb Sheridan won B flight play with a par 4 (two putts). Lise Steinburg and Deanna Cassell tied for the win in C flight both with fives (one putt) and Helen Zeran won D flight with a five (using two putts).

High scores were carded by Lori Anne Davies with a six (two putts) in A flight, while Linda Barclay had the high in B flight with a 7 thanks to three putts.

Also three-putting was Candace Jamieson who won C flight with a nine, and Lydia Eamon who won D flight with a nine.

The evening was sponsored by Horner and Pietersma and coming up this week the sponsor is Home Hardware.

The flight winners were Lindsay Weegar in A, Larry Gallinger in B and Darryl McDonell in C. Net wins went to Brian McNairn in A, Mitch Cassell in B and Pieter Ozinga in C.

Coming up this Thursday, June 27 the men’s night sponsor is Brister Insurance.

The ladies completed their qualifying rounds for the 2013 Valley League team on Sunday. This year’s qualifying consisted of two rounds, the first played on an open date determined by the individual golfers, and the second played Sunday.

Davies, Boivin share top qualifying spot

Vicki Boivin led Sunday’s field with an 86 which she added to her previous 90. Boivin and Lori Anne Davies led the team with 176 totals. Davies kicked it off with an 87, and then added an 89, Sunday. The third Valley League spot in A flight was claimed by Monique Patenaude (90-95).

In B flight Linda Barclay took top spot with a 188 total. Barclay shot a first round 88 and added a 100 on Sunday. Laurie Dillabough took second spot with a 192 (91-101), and Judy Laurin was third with a 200 total (97-103).

Kitty Moore led C flight with a 211 (109-102). Next up was Carol Armstrong at 223 (115-108) and Candace Jamieson claimed the third spot at 241 (122-119). D flight qualifiers were Helen Youmelle at 228 (110-118) and Linda Henderson 285 (139-146). Barb Sheridan will play in the senior spot with a 186 (94-92) total.

This year’s Ladies Valley League is set for August 18, at Cedar Glen, Williamsburg.

Duvall, Barry lead men’s team qualifying

The top shooters in the men’s qualifying rounds were Kevin Duvall and Blake Barry who tied with 36 hole totals of 146. Duvall posted 71-75 and Barry shot 70-76 to secure the top two spots on the Border League team, the top two A flight spots on the Valley League team and the top two spots for the men’s Intersectionals.

Rounding out the remaining six Border League and Intersectionals spots are Ron Lapier (74-80), Lindsay Weegar (73-83), Lee Beaupre (77-80), Dave McClenaghan (83-84), Larry Cooper (82-82) and Larry Gallinger (85-83). Gary Breyer claimed the senior Border League spot with a 169 total (79-90), and he and Charlie Moore picked up the final two spots on the Intersectional team.  The Border League will be played August 11, at the Brockville Country Club, and the Intersectionals  is set for July 14, at Whitetail in Eganville.

Lapier and Weegar will make up the remaining two Valley League A flight spots.  Cooper, Gallinger, Breyer and Charlie Moore (87-83) will make up the B flight team. Qualifying for the C flight spots were Bob Barclay (91-85), Mitch Cassell (95-88), Danny Youmelle (98-86) and Bob Youmelle (99-86). Lee Beaupre qualified for the senior spot on the Valley League team. Valley League will be played August 24, at Sandy Row.

U13 Girls defeat Ottawa Internationals

The Seaway Kickers U13 Girls team defeated the Ottawa Royals G2 team 4-2 at the Merkley Soccer Fields in Iroquois, on June 18. 

Ottawa claimed the lead early in the first half with back-to-back goals, making it 2-0. Late in the first half, Kicker Helene Bygott scored, with Sydney Piquette landing the tying goal moments later. At half-time, the score was 2-2. 

A goaltending change at half-time led to no further scoring by Ottawa. 

Early in the second half Piquette scored her second of the night, giving Seaway a 3-2 lead. Kiana Fredette scored on a penalty kick for added insurance. Final score, Seaway 4-Ottawa Internationals 2. 

They visit the Ottawa Royals G3 team at Bruff Park in Ottawa June 24. 

Kickers U13M team continues undefeated season

The U13 Mixed team hosted the Ottawa Internationals M1 team in Iroquois June 20. Scoring started early with a Seaway goal by David Swerdfeger, low and in the left corner. 

Moments later, Seaway’s Conner Dumoulin planted a strong shot in net, for a 2-0 Seaway advantage. 

Late in the first half, Ottawa landed a successful shot on Seaway goalie Shawn Dowson, to cut the Seaway lead to 2-1 at the half. 

Early in the second half, Seaway’s John Coligan netted a hard shot in the top right corner of the goal. 

Kurt Cutler and Jacob Byvelds finished it off giving the Kickers the 5-1 win.

The Kickers U13 Mixed team season record is six wins, no losses and no ties. They host the Nepean City’s M4 team in Iroquois, June 27. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

U15 Girls lose to Ottawa

The Seaway Kickers U15 Girls team lost to the Ottawa Royals G2 team, 2-1, at St. Joseph’s High School in Nepean on June 19. Jessica Ferguson scored for Seaway. 

The U15 Girls visit the Nepean HotSpurs G1 team on June 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Des Laurier High School in Nepean.

Another U18 Girls win

The Seaway Kickers U18 Girls team defeated Nepean City on June 17 in the second game of a home and home series, 6-1. 

Leslie-Ann Tupper scored four goals in the back-to-back rout. The U18 girls visit the Ottawa Internationals on June 24 at Hillcrest High School in Ottawa.

ILLIAMSBURG – Cheryl Lowe shot a 43 to kick off the week at the weekly ladies night last Wednesday, June 12 at the Cedar Glen Golf Course. Lowe’s 43 gave her the low gross in A flight over Shari Boyd who finished with a 47.

In B flight, it was Janet Levere in the lead. Levere shot a 54 to edge out Sue McIntosh, who was one stroke back with a 55. The win in C flight went to Sandra Julien with a 57, while Jane Hess led the D flight golfers with a 52. 

Net winners were Pat Reaney in A flight, Elise Muir in B and Gerry McEwan in C. 

Barb Barkley landed her shot closest to the pin on the par three 12th hole, while Cheryl Lowe won the closest shot on the par three 15th.

In men’s night action on Thursday, June 13, Kurtis Barkley stepped into the A flight winners circle thanks to a 35. Darrell Shelp was next with a 37, while Lonnie MacIntosh and Lyle Schell posted the low net scores in A flight.

Harry Lalonde won B flight with a 40, while Hubert Barkley stole the show in C flight with a 45. Steve Wells rounded it out with a 51 for the win in D flight.

Nets wins went to Jeff Whitteker in B flight and Darwin Bird in C flight. Closest to the pin winners were Shaler Hill on the par three 6th hole and Harold Chalker on the ninth. Lyle Schell hit the longest drive.
