Shot put specialist Maggie Wells was back in form, and jumper Kaitlyn Stewart was on top of her game at the National Capital High School Track and Field Classic run over two days at the Terry Fox Athletic fields at Mooney Bay Park on Thursday and Friday, May 7-8.

Wells won the midget girls shot put Friday, with a throw of 11.92m, well up from her third place 10.88m throw at the Thousand Island Meet two weeks ago and Stewart won open triple jump with a 10.12m jump, just slightly under her winning jump of 10.45m at TISS. Well’s other specialty, discus, was not offered at the Classic due to renovations being made to the throwing area.

Due to the high volume of athletes (over 1,500 in the last few years), this year’s Classic was run over two days and offered identical competition.

Midget athlete David Swerdfeger had another successful meet with a first in the 300m hurdles (46.14 seconds) and a pair of seconds in long jump (5.35m) and triple jump open (11.75m).

Sid Sideratos took second in high jump with a 1.50m jump (winner jumped 1.55m), and third in shot put with an 11.29m throw (12,88m won it). This was down from his 12.14m throw at TISS.

Kaeghan Lowson picked up ribbons in midget boys javelin and 300m hurdles. 

Down just slightly from his fifth place 32.45m throw at Thousands Island, he placed second in javelin at 32.03m. A 39.54m throw won the event.

Lowson was third in the 300m hurdles (50.29 seconds) and ran the 400m ninth at 1:01.40 shaving just under two minutes off his TISS time.

Also at the midget level, Shawn Dowson was fourth in high jump (1.50m). He was ninth in shot put with a 9.83m throw.

Rounding out the boys team was junior athlete, Kyle Ault who ran the 200m in 27.38 seconds and the 400 in 1:00.96 to place 10th and 14th respectively.

On the girls team, Cassie Hummel improved her pb throw of 27.60m thrown at TISS two weeks ago with a 27.67m. This gave her third place in junior javelin. (Winning throw 29.54m).

The junior girls had six athletes competing including Wells and Hummel.

Kaitlyn Stewart, along with her triple jump win, had a fourth place long jump finish at 4.45m down. The win went in 4.64m.

Izzy Burrell jumped 8.71m for a seventh place triple jump finish in the open division and was 11th in long jump with a 3.97m jump.

Quinn Horne and Holly Connolly-MacDonald ran the junior girls 100 and 200m races. Horne was ninth in the 200 with a time of 30.21 seconds and 11th in the 100 at 14.43 seconds. Connolly-MacDonald finished well back with a time of 17.47 in the 100 and 38.67 in the 200m.

Midget high jumper, Taylor Sharpley was fourth at 1.30m. She ran the 200m at 30.47 time.

The lone senior athlete was Ashley Whitteker who ran the 100 (12th at 14.83) and 200m (13th at 32.66).

A Josh Maley goal for the hosting Athens Aeros here Sunday night with just 2:24 left in the game, sent the Morrisburg Junior B Lions home with a tough 4-3 loss. 

The Lions who are in last place in the St. Lawrence Division and the Aeros who hold the same spot in their Rideau Division were evenly matched throughout the game. The Lions put up 25 shots against Aeros goaltender Alex Daley and the Aeros produced 31 shots against Lions goaltender John Gilmer.

The Lions held a slight 2-1 edge after the first period, and the game was tied after two.

It was the Maley goal at 17:36 of the third period that was the difference.

Parker Grant opened the Aeros scoring at 4:13 of the first period, but the Lions came charging back with a Justin Lefebvre goal (from Cole Fowler) at 9:10 to even it.

Dallas Blacksmith struck (with help from Landon Veenstra and Eric Evans) at 15:38 of the first period to put the Lions ahead, 2-1, going into the second period.

Play was tight for the first 14 minutes of the second period, and then the Aeros came on strong to first tie it with a Nathan Foster goal at 14:06 and, then, 25 seconds later go ahead, 3-2, with a Ty Hannaford goal.

The Lions evened it on their power play at 16:56, with Evans getting the goal which set up by Dallas Blacksmith and Michael Paquette.

Third period action saw no results in the scoring department until Maley counted what would turn out to be the winner for the Aeros at 17:36.

The Lions sat out 22 minutes in penalties on seven infractions, and the Aeros were assessed five infractions for a total of 10 penalty minutes. The Lions were successful in one of three power-play opportunities while the Aeros did not score on their power play in six opportunities. 

Coming up, the Lions are on the road to play the Char-Lan Rebels on Saturday night, December 20. Then on Sunday, December 21 they will host the Akwesasne Wolves. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

The Wolves are in fourth place in the St. Lawrence Division with 23 points, while Char-Lan is fifth with 17 points. The Lions have 14 points.

The Casselman Vikings have pulled well away from the rest of the St. Lawrence division with 45 points, while the Alexandria Glens are in second spot with 27 points and the Winchester Hawks are right on their heels with 26.

The Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey season got underway in Kemptville on the weekend, and for the Morrisburg Lions, it wasn’t a bad start.
After losing their opening game in the second annual Fall Classic, 3-1 to the Ottawa West Golden Knights on Friday night, the Lions turned it around Saturday, for a 5-3 win over the Stittsville Royals.

In their opener against the Knights, the two were tied 1-1 after two periods, before the Knights capitalized on a bad Lions’ clearing attempt, to set them up for a late power-play goal to seal the game.

Alex Steingruber scored the lone Lions’ goal in the second period with the assists going to Ryan Ward and goaltender Mikael Dion, who was called upon to make 37 saves during the game.

“I was pleased with our effort against a very good Ottawa West team,” said Lions’ coach Thom Racine. “We showed if we move our feet and skate like we can, shift after shift, we can play with these good teams.”

“We made them earn the win, and we have to take something from that.”

On Saturday night, against the Stittsville Royals, the Lions got off to a slow start, but got out of the first period in a 1-1 tie.

It was a big goal for both the Lions and Drew Veenstra who collected his first Junior B goal after going the entire season without one last year. He was assisted by team captain Matt Ouimet.

Early in the second period, Ouimet put the Lions ahead, 2-1, on a pretty set up from Ty Hodgson on the power play.

Unfortunately, the Lions couldn’t hold on and gave up two late period goals to trail 3-2 after 40 minutes.

A relentless forecheck to begin the third period saw Sylvester Bzdyl tie the game, 3-3, just over a minute in, from a Drew Veenstra rebound.
Brayden Girard then scored on a solo effort to push it to 4-3 at 2:44.

The fifth and final goal, at 7:47 of the third, came on a Clark Veenstra set up to Michel Thurler who rifled a wrist show low to Erik Miksik’s glove side.

Dion was in net for the Lions first win of the 2011/12 regular season.

“Clark Veenstra was huge all night long, as he frustrated the Royals defenders with punishing body checks,” said coach Racine.

As a result Veenstra was named the game star to join goaltender Dion who was the named the Lions’ game star in the loss to Ottawa West.
The Fall Classic was sponsored by the Ottawa Senators who provided 88 home game tickets for the MVPs on both teams of each of the 22 games played, as well as Senator ball caps.

Coach Racine says he was very happy with the weekend split.

“I looked at our division before the second game, and I knew we had to win to keep pace (everyone else that had played had earned a point their first games), and the kids really responded.”

“The win can be enjoyed, but we get the defending champs (Winchester) Sunday in our home opener and that will be another early season test.”

The Alexandria Glens and the Casselman Vikings both won their Fall Classic games for four points each. The Hawks posted a win and a tie for three points, and the Lions are next with two points. Akwesasne produced one tie and Char-Lan lost both games.

The Lions are at home this Sunday, September 25 to the Winchester Hawks at 2:30 p.m.

Their next action is on Friday night, September 30 when the Char-Lan Rebels come to town for an 8:30 p.m. game.
