With Josh Martineau between the pipes, the South Dundas Major Midget B Rep Lions picked up their 10th win of the regular season over South Stormont, 6-1, here last Thursday night, December 5.

The Lions are now holding top spot in the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League’s East Division with 23 points, six points up on South Grenville and Cornwall who are tied with 17 points apiece.

Last Thursday night in Morrisburg, Cameron Michels and Tanner Hummel struck to give the Lions a 2-0 first period lead.

Aaron Smith and Drew Minish provided the assists on the Michels goal while Drew Minish and Michels helped out on the Hummel counter.

Nash Nesbitt made it 3-0 in the second period with Minish and Riley Black providing the assists.

Early in the third period, Jordan St. Louis pushed the Lions advantage to 4-0 with goaltender Martineau credited with the assist.

South Stormont spoiled Martineau’s shut out on a play that started with a shot from the point. The shot was deflected off a player in front of the net and on to the stick of an unguarded Stormont man at the far corner who buried it past Martineau.

The final Lions goal was scored by Josh Black from Minish and Toby Mullin for the 6-1 Lions win.

Next action for the Lions is this Thursday night, December 12 in Morrisburg at 8 p.m.

Correction: In a story that appeared in the December 4 issue of the Leader, it was incorrectly reported that a goal was scored against Brockville as the result of a great pinch and deke by Jordan Smail. The great play was in fact made by Jordan St. Louis.

Our Morrisburg ladies hosted their annual bonspiel last week. Because of health problems, two of the teams had to drop out, so organizer Alice Thompson filled the gaps with local teams.

In the early draw, the winning team was the Morrisburg entry of Greta McGann, Sharon Van Allen, Joanne Baker and Sonja Laurin. The second place quartet was Raja Wysocki’s Russell foursome, who also had a very good day. Other teams from Alexandria, Navan, Cornwall and Lancaster competed as well. 

Most of the matches were close, and a good crowd of spectators enjoyed the fine curling. 

In the second draw, Virginia Cunningham’s North Grenville rink was the class of the competition, winning both of their matches. Susan McIntosh, with her team of Betty Locke, Yvonne Mabo and Linda Murphy,  finished second. Also competing was another Russell team, a second Cornwall rink, and teams from Prescott and Ottawa’s R.A. Centre.

Alice thanked the volunteers who provided food, helped in the kitchen, looked after the ice, and assisted in myriad other ways to make the day a success. 

Our guests were impressed with the appearance of our club, the ice quality, and, as always, the meal they were served. The winning teams from each draw will have their names engraved on the Invitational trophy. It was a very successful day, and the profits earned were turned over to the Morrisburg club.

Some of our curlers were away at other bonspiels. Pete Zeran, Karl Duncan, Earl Jeacle and Jim Bancroft were in Maxville last week for their one game bonspiel. Pete reports that they had a good time, and their opponents kindly bought drinks for them after their match.

Greta McGann, Jane Connolly, Yvonne Mabo and Linda Murphy competed in a Navy bonspiel last week. In their first match, they tied Arnprior and the skips broke the tie with draws to the button. Morrisburg lost. After a good lunch, the ladies were at it again, this time against a City View rink. Our ladies finished second in this match, but enjoyed the day anyway.

Our little rockers were off to another bonspiel last weekend, this time in Manotick. Our thanks to Kathi and Ian Wilson, who coach the youngsters, and coach and teach them on Monday nights at the club. We’ll have the Manotick results for you next time.

There may still be an opening or two for the Christmas Bonspiel at the club this Saturday, and for the New Year’s Eve bonspiel and party. Sign-up sheets are in the clubhouse.

Our kitchen remake is nearly complete, with new cabinets, improved flooring, a new stove, and other improvements. Not only has the money from grants been spent wisely, but a number of members have been hard at work, putting sweat equity into our old club’s improvements. Drop in and have a look. 

By the way, you need not be a member to rent the facilities for a day or an evening. President Mahlon Locke is the person to see for details.

The South Dundas Midget B Rep Lions have been busy racking up points in the win column, their only blemish coming in a tournament in Prescott when they lost their opening game to the Kemptville Panthers, 2-0.

But they cleared up that issue, and then some, when they worked their way through the Sunday, November 24 tournament to meet the Panthers for a rematch in the championship game and came out the winners by a 3-0 count.

In addition to the tournament championship, the Lions posted league wins 2-0 over Brockville last Wednesday night, November 27th and 7-1 over  Alexandria last night, December 2. They are now undefeated in 11 consecutive league games.

Their busy schedule all started when the Lions kicked off South Dundas Minor Hockey Lion’s Day event on Friday, November 22 with a 3-3 exhibition game tie against a visiting Leitrim squad.

Scoring for the Lions in the tie were Jordan Smail with two goals and Nash Nesbitt with a single. 

The Prescott tournament was played in a round robin format and used a point system, with each period won worth one point and the game result worth two. With five points up for grabs in each game, the Lions fell behind in their opening game, 2-0 loss to Kemptville.

They recovered in game two with a 4-1 win over the Pontiac Lions, to pick up five points and force their way into the championship final for a rematch with the undefeated Panthers.

Providing the four goals against Pontiac were Nick Lalonde, Evan Mullin, Josh Black and Cameron Michels. Josh Martineau was in net for the win. 

Nesbitt, Jordan St. Louis, Black and Lalonde picked up assists.

The Lions skated into the championship final looking for revenge for their opening game 2-0 loss, and to get it they put together a complete game of hockey. The Lions featured tight defence and aggressive forechecking, and they were rewarded for their efforts with a 3-0 victory.

Goaltending was shared between Martineau and Zack Frawley.

After a scoreless first period, the Lions knocked the wind out of the Panthers with a pair of goals less than one minute apart in the second period.

Nick Lalonde started it with help from St. Louis and Jordan Smail, and Spencer Heldens (from Tanner Hummel and Toby Mullin) added to it for a 2-0 Lions lead heading into the third period.

Early in the third, Riley Black put the icing on the cake with help from Riley Barry for the 3-0 Lions win for the tournament championship.

In league action, the Lions were in Brockville on Wednesday, November 27th where they blanked their hosts 2-0. Zack Frawley was in the Lions net for the shut out.

The Lions dominated the play, out-shooting Brockville 29-18 and keeping the puck in their end throughout much of the contest.

The Lions were also called for the Lions share of penalties, 11 to Brockville’s six, but the penalty killers did a great job and in fact killed off three, five-on-three Brockville power plays.

After the scoreless first period, Tanner Hummel counted a second period goal on a scramble in front of the Brockville net with help from Trey Suddard and Jordan Smail. 

Riley Black made it 2-0 in the third period thanks to a great pinch by Jordan Smail at the blue line. After gaining the puck Smail deked around a Brockville defenceman and made a beautiful pass to Black.

Monday night, December 2, the Lions were in Alexandria where they picked up a lop-sided 7-1 win. 

The last time the two teams met the game ended in a 4-4 tie. This time out the Lions fore-checked relentlessly and took advantage of their turnovers.

The Lions led 1-0 after the first period on a Jordan St. Louis goal, and in the second Aaron Smith counted two while Cameron Michaels and Jordan Smail were good for singles.

Tanner Hummel and Drew Minish finished it off in the third period.

Josh Martineau, who was in net for the win, had his shutout spoiled by a deflected shot.

The South Dundas Midget B Lions will be back in action this Thursday night in Morrisburg, at 8 p.m. against South Stormont.

The Ontario Senior Games curling division, the Zone 8 Playdowns were held at our club over the weekend. Four teams, one from Winchester, one from Alexandria and two from Morrisburg, competed. 

In the Saturday morning game, Morrisburg’s Andy Patenaude, Sue McIntosh, Neil Williams and Betty Locke defeated Alexandria’s Brian and Joy Clinton, Bob Youmelle (who filled in for an ailing Graham Vickers) and Linda Vickers. 

In their first, our other Morrisburg team, Raymond Benoit, Cheryl Thompson, Pete Zeran and Ruth Kelly played Winchester’s Gary Price, Janet Thompson, Don McMillan and Ann Cook. Winchester, which has been to the provincial finals on several occasions, prevailed.

In their second matches, our two Morrisburg teams met in the round robin, while the Winchester and Alexandria foursomes squared off. Alexandria upset Winchester, while Raymond Benoit’s foursome won out over Andy Patenaude. This left the four teams with identical win/loss records, and set the stage for Sunday morning’s final round robin games.

In case of a tie, the gold, silver and bronze medal winners were to be determined by wins against opponents, ends, etc. 

Graham Vickers was back in the mix for Alexandria, so our “Bad Bob” Youmelle retired with thanks from “his” team. The matches were hard-fought, with some crucial missed shots from all teams.

Winchester’s Price rink managed to eke out a win over our Patenaude foursome, while Alexandria defeated the Raymond Benoit quartet, also from our club. This set the statisticians to work, and they awarded the gold medals to Alexandria, because of their win over Winchester, who took silver. 

Raymond Benoit, Cheryl Thompson, Pete Zeran and Ruth Kelly, because of their win over Andy Patenaude, Sue McIntosh, Neil Williams and Betty Locke in the round robin, earned bronze medals.

Special thanks to Monique Patenaude, the Zone 8 coordinator for the Ontario Sr. Games. She watched over the stats, presented medals, and with her committee, put on a fine lunch on Saturday for the curlers. 

All Ontario residents 55 and over are eligible to compete in the games. Winter games in the near future are in Billiards, Pickleball, Duplicate Bridge, Skating, Nordic Skiing (Prediction and Time Trials), and Alpine Skiing. In other news, a correction: in last week’s Winchester bonspiel, Sid Morrell had Bud Perry with him and not Andy Patenaude. With Neil Williams and Don O’Brien, the fellows won both of their matches in Winchester and finished second on the day.

In another correction, in the first of the season’s Parnells last week, Lancaster was the champion team. The next match will be held in Cornwall on January 3. For this one we are allowed two teams, so playoffs, if needed, will be held this month to determine our finalists.

In the Alzheimer Society bonspiel last Saturday, curlers, along with Scotiabank, raised $4,280. In the late draw, the winners were Sam Locke, Greta McGann, Dave McIntosh and Linda Murphy. It was a great bonspiel for a worthy cause. Thanks to all who made it such a success.

Congratulations again to the club’s little rockers, who competed last Saturday in the Kemptville Bonspiel, and whose results were covered last week.

The Morrisburg Junior B Lions were handed another pair of weekend losses in the St. Lawrence Division of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey league, by the Prescott Flyers in their barn Saturday night, and the Alexandria Glens in Morrisburg on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions played tough in the first two periods of Saturday night’s match against the Flyers, but it all fell apart in the third period as the Flyers collected four in a row to work their way to a 6-4 victory.

Then on Sunday afternoon, in front of a crowd of 75 fans, the Lions were upended by the Alexandria Glens who were in control all the way to the third period, when the Lions were finally heard from for their three goals in the 8-3 loss.

Saturday night in Prescott, a Brandon Mullin goal, assisted by Chris Pearson, gave the Lions a 1-0 lead at 7:18 of the first period.

The period closed with an Andrew DeKroon goal at 18:36 to even the game at 1-1.

Then in the second period, Michael Paquette struck for the Lions at 4:09 and again at 14:03, both assisted by Christian Leger, for a 3-1 Lions lead.

The Flyers got one back to end the period behind 3-2.

Just 1:53 into the third period, Liam Morrow connected on the Lions power play with help from Isaac Brownlee, and the Lions again were in charge with a two goal, 4-2 lead.

But then it all fell apart as the Flyers worked their way back, beginning with a Ryan Romans goal at 2:39 and the tying counter from Andrew DeKroon at 6:40.

Just over three minutes later, Matt Soubliere put them up 5-4 and Chris Poulin ended it at 14:44 for the 6-4 Flyers win.

Brandon Chilton was in net for the Lions loss. He faced 45 Flyers shots.

Flyers goaltender Dallas Slack faced 29 Lions shots.

Sunday afternoon in Morrisburg, the Glens were all over the Lions, going up 2-0 in the first period and leading 5-0 after two.

In the first two minutes of the third period the Glens added another pair for a 7-0 advantage.

At 6:34 of the third period, AJ Jarvis put the Lions on the scoreboard with help from Cole Blanchard.

Luca Ciale counted the Glens final goal at 12:27 to make it 8-1.

Christian Leger, assisted by Michael Paquette and Jarvis, scored on the Lions power play at 14:19 and Chris Pearson (from Paquette and Taylor Eamon) counted the Lions final, also on their power play at 19:24.

John Gilmer handled the Lions net duties, giving up the eight goals on 32 shots. Brett Ayers saw action for the Glens. He gave up the three goals on 38 Lions shots.

The Lions scored all three of their goals on their power play. The Glens scored twice on their power play and once while short-handed.

Coming up this weekend, the Lions are at Athens for an 7:30 p.m. game on Sunday night, December 8.

This Saturday, December 7 three of the Lions players will be at the JR. Brisson Complex in Casselman for the EOJHL’s Prospects Games featuring the top 16 and 17 year old players in the league.

Game 1 is at 4:30 p.m. between the Valley and Rideau Divisions and game two, between the Metro and St. Lawrence Divisions, is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Appearing in the St. Lawrence Division lineup are Lions defencemen Kieran Devine and Andrew Jarvis and forward Isaac Brownlee.

MORRISBURG – Good, Better, Best….that was the combination Morrisburg and District Figure Skater Trina Dykstra-MacPherson was aiming for when she started skating  at the Junior Bronze Level last winter. And that is the combination she completed with a gold medal skate performance at the 2013 Asticou Skating Club competition in Aylmer, Quebec, on Sunday, November 17.

Trina had the Good performance at her first competition at the Junior Bronze Level in Morrisburg last January for a third place finish. Then in April, she accomplished the Better to land a silver medal performance at a competition  in Gloucester.

She finished it off in Aylmer with the Best skate for her gold medal trip to the podium.

For the two minute and nine second program in Aylmer, Trina says, “I had a clean skate. Even the whole day, I didn’t fall at all. My technical marks were my strongest. My jumps and spins are both good.”

Included in Trina’s gold medal program are a Double Toe Jump, a Double Salchow and two Axel Jumps, one with a Loop. She also includes a Flip Loop and a Lutz.

“It was her first time trying her double toe in competition which she landed successfully,” says Trina’s coach Louise Dimmick. “Trina had a strong performance that really built on her training and previous competitions. She works hard at the rink and is very focused. It was nice to see her have this success.”

Twelve-year old Trina, is a grade 7 student at St. George Roman Catholic School in Long Sault. She has been skating since she was six years old and she says it is her “absolutely most favourite thing to do. My friends say to me ‘Trina, it is always skating…skating, skating, skating all the time’.”

Her love of the sport and her talent shows in her quick movement through the various skating programs. A member of the Morrisburg and District Figure Skating Club and a guest skater with the Nepean Figure Skating Club, Trina skated one year in the CanSkate program, one year in Junior, two years in Intermediate and is now a senior skater.

Trina says of her gold medal performance in Aylmer, that it “felt good” and she knew she had “skated really well,” when she left the ice.

In addition to winning gold with her solo skate as a Morrisburg club skater, Trina teamed with Nepean skaters Chloe Sills and Kiara Hartnell to claim a second gold medal at the Aylmer competition in Team Elements on behalf of the Nepean Skating Club.

For her part of the team event, Trina complete an Axel as her first element and a spiral sequence, which included a Biellman spiral and a Y spiral, as her second element.

Along with Trina’s Axel, “Chloe did an Axle Toe Loop and she landed it and Kierra did a Lutz and it was good.”

With the Aylmer skate behind her, Trina now turns her attention towards her season goal. “I want to get through all three stages of EOSIC and make it to Trillium.”

This year’s EOSIC (Eastern Ontario STARskate Invitational Championship) is being hosted by the Cornwall Figure Skating Club at the Benson Centre, February 14-16, 2014.

Trina skates six days per week, four in Morrisburg and travels to Nepean two nights per week, all the while working hard to keep up with her schoolwork. She is also a Canskate PA with the little ones in Morrisburg on Saturday mornings. 

She skates year-round and in the summer she adds ballet classes to her schedule which is an extension of her skate program in Nepean. 

In Nepean she works with three coaches including her Morrisburg coach Louise Dimmick. “Dan [Gordon, Nepean coach], says I have a good presentation and a good style of skating.”

Sue McIntosh’s first two-person bonspiel went off well last Sunday. The ‘C’ champions were Mahlon Locke and Bud Perry. The ‘B’ champs (one loss) were Andy Patenaude and Paul St. Pierre, and the ‘A’ champs, who won every game, were Jim and Wendy Casselman. Thanks again to Sue, the organizer, to those who arranged for lunch, and to all who helped in any way to make the day a success.

Our curlers were involved in a mixed bonspiel, the Gamble, last Saturday. Wendy and Jim Casselman and Sam and Claire Locke played well, but were not able to win the A or B title. Greta McGann and Paul St. Pierre had to pick up two Russell curlers to flesh out their team, and in spite of good play, could not bring home the A or B trophy either. As usual, the curlers had a good meeting after the dinner and the finals. Better luck next year, folks!

Two teams of senior men entered a Winchester bonspiel. Jack Barkley, Wally Baker, Doug Jarvis and Bud Perry split their games, while Sid Morrell, Andy Patenaude, Neil Williams and Don O’Brien won both of theirs and finished second in their draw.

Last Wednesday our daytime senior mixed curlers hosted Russell in a friendly bonspiel. Sue McIntosh, Len Bellamy, Arnold Barkley and Keith Robinson defeated their Russell counterparts, as did Alice Thompson, Fred Langlotz, Denis Thibault and Lise Steinberg. Andy Patenaude was a friendlier host, letting his guest foursome win. He was abetted by Ted Herriman, Cheryl Thompson and Bob Youmelle. 

 Four of our senior men played last week in Navan’s over-70 bonspiel. Keith Robinson, Fred Langlotz, Arnold Barkley and Glenn Cougler did battle with Carleton Heights in the morning and Buckingham in the afternoon. The fellows played hard, but dropped both matches. There are some top curlers in this group, with at least one team former Provincial finalists. Keep trying, folks!

The first of the season’s Parnells, the competition for Morrisburg, Prescott, Cornwall and Lancaster men’s teams, was played on Friday. Dave King, Jack Barkley, Doug Jarvis and Sam Locke were our representatives. They defeated Gary Cook’s Prescott team, the  eventual Parnell winners, but lost to George Delaney of Lancaster. The food and fellowship were great, but they hope to enjoy things even more in the next Parnell competition.

Last Tuesday, the senior men finished league play in their two-man competition. Winners were Neil Williams and Bob Bechard. Well done, fellows.

We witnessed a great charity bonspiel for the Alzheimer society last Saturday. A tidy sum of money was raised, and while everyone had a good time and received some sort of a prize, there were noteworthy awards for the victors. 

In the early draw, Jack Barkley, Ray Benoit and Donna and Jeff Trumble took top honours. It was good to see people out from various leagues, and many curlers from outside the club as well. We’ll have the remaining stats next week.

MORRISBURG–The visiting Athens Aeros collected a goal from J.P. Augustine at 9:56 of the third period that broke a 3-3 tie and turned out to be the decider as the Lions lost to the Aeros, 5-3, on home ice Saturday night.

The Aeros managed their fifth and final goal of the game in the last minute of play in the empty Lions net, as Lions head coach Mark Evans, elected to go with the extra attacker in a effort to tie the match and force overtime.

The Lions were first on the scoreboard in Saturday night’s game, as they went up 1-0 at 6:15 of the first period on a Christian Leger goal assisted by Andrew Jarvis and Eric Evans.

It would be the first of four power-play goals, two by each team, to be scored in the game that saw 49 minutes in penalties assessed in 15 offenses. 

The visiting Aeros were assessed just four minor penalties, while the Lions sat out eight minors, a five minute head contact major and two game misconducts.

The Aeros came charging back in the second period. 

At 3:38, Liam Widdowfield beat Lions goaltender John Gilmer to tie the game and at 12:53 Drew Powell (power play) gave them a 3-2 lead.

Before the period ended however, Leger again would be heard from, on the Lions power play, this time assisted by Dallas Blacksmith and Taylor Eamon.

A flurry of goals got started in the third period, three counted in just over two minutes.

At 7:34 of the third  period, the Aeros gained the advantage with a Damian Levesque goal, but again the Lions charged back, this time with Liam Morrow counting at 8:48 with help from Peter Ketcheson and Blacksmith.

Then at 9:56, Augustine connected for what would turn out to be the winner.

Liam Widdowfield put the puck in the empty Lions net at 19:39 to ice the cake.

In other league action, it was a strange one for the St. Lawrence Division’s first place Casselman Vikings who hold the spot with 38 points, eight up on the Winchester Hawks.

The Vikings got it rolling on home ice on Thursday, Nov. 21 with a big 9-1 win over the Hawks, but then lost their first game of the season on Friday night, Nov. 22 to Gananoque.  Then on Sunday they were nabbed for a 7-6 overtime win by the Akwesasne Wolves.

The Char-Lan Rebels are in the division’s third spot with 27 points, while Akwesasne holds fourth place with 21 and the Alexandrian Glens are right on their heels with 19.

The Lions have just five points.

Coming up this week, the Lions are on the road to play Prescott on Saturday night, November 30. Then on Sunday, December 1, they host Alexandria. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

MORRISBURG–The first weekend under new head coach, Mark Evans, and the Morrisburg Junior B Lions  hung in for an overtime-shoot-out win against the Char-Lan Rebels here on Sunday afternoon.

Lions management announced late last week that they had made a coaching change that saw Evans move into the head coach position, replacing Dan Frawley. Also no longer behind the Lions bench is assistant coach Andrew Scott, who gave up his position due to work commitments.

That leaves Evans with the task of putting together a coaching team, which Lions General Manager Kevin Casselman says he is now busy doing.

“Clearly with only one win in 14 games, things weren’t happening,” explained Casselman of the coaching change. “We felt we needed a change of spirit, and it is easier to change one or two faces than it is to change 25. That’s the nature of the game, and we appreciate the time and commitment Dan put in.”

Casselman says that Sunday’s win was a dose of good medicine for the team. “While we have played well, we haven’t been able to get a win. So Sunday’s, win was very upbeat, very emotional for the boys. This year’s kids are staying positive. They know they have played well. It’s different when you have been blown out of every game, but we haven’t.”

Evans steps into the Lions head coach position with a solid resume. He originally came to the Cornwall area to play hockey with the Cornwall Royals under coach Orval Tessier. He played for three years, two as a defenceman before Tessier moved him to a forward position.

In 1991, he coached in the Seaway Valley Rapids Association at the Bantam Level. Then in 92-93 he became assistant coach of the  Colts, that being the year they moved from Massena to Cornwall. He became the Colts head coach for the 1994-95 season and took them to the CJHL Championship and was voted the league’s Coach of the Year.

After a three year hiatus, he returned to the game, like many dads, to coach his sons in minor hockey. He became familiar to the Lions last year when son Eric was on the roster. This year both Eric and Curtis are Lions.

We put together two really good games on the weekend, says Casselman. Saturday, against Akwesasne, we gave up the third goal with just under three minutes left. It was anyone’s game.

The third goal for the Wolves broke a 2-2 tie and gave them a 3-2 win in their home barn, Saturday.

Hiio Herne opened the scoring for the Wolves late in the first period. The 1-0 lead lasted until 15:09 of the second period when Dallas Blacksmith got the Lions on board to even it.

Then just over three minutes later Christian Leger gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage. 

Three minutes into the third period, Oakley Thomas put the puck past Lions goaltender John Gilmer to again even it up.

At 15:51 Sean David struck to give the Wolves the 3-2 win.

Sunday on Morrisburg ice, Brandon Chilton was in the Lions net for the 6-5 shoot out win.

The Lions led 1-0 after the first period and the game was tied 2-2 after two. It was a high flying third period that saw three goals traded to close the game tied at 5-5. Chilton and Boileau, in net for the Rebels, kept the overtime scoreless and set the stage for the shoot out.

Scoring for the Lions in regulation time were Dallas Blacksmith with two goals, and Taylor Eamon, Isaac Brownlee and Peter Ketcheson with singles. Assists went to Brandon Mullin, Ketcheson, Justin Lefevbre (2), Liam Morrow (2), Kieran Devine and Chris Pearson.

Coming up this weekend the Lions are at home, Saturday night November 23, against the Athens Aeros. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

MORRISBURG–It was another good week for the South Dundas Major Midget B Lions as they kept their undefeated string alive with a 5-3 win over Perth/Lanark in Morrisburg, Saturday night, and a 2-2 tie against Cornwall, Sunday in Cornwall.

This brings the Lions record to seven wins, two losses and three ties for a share of the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League’s East Division’s first place spot with Cornwall. It also stretches the Lions undefeated streak to 10 games.

Friday night, the Lions hosted Perth/Lanark, who hold first place in the UCMHL’s Major B west division, and after playing to a one goal first period draw, the Lions pulled ahead 3-2 after the second. Two early goals in the third period put it away.

Cameron Michels put the Lions on the scoreboard at 5:32 of the first period with help from Evan Mullin. The 1-0 Lions lead held until late in the frame when Brett Harrigan tied it.

The early goings of the second period were scoreless, but with 6:41 left on the clock, Josh Black made it 2-1 for the Lions with Drew Minish and Evan Mullin providing the assists.

Thirteen seconds later, Perth Lanark was right back in it with a Jacob Buffam counter that evened it at 2-2.

But the Lions weren’t finished yet, and charged back one minute laster this time with a Spencer Heldens goal (from Trey Suddard and Tanner Hummel) to carry a slim 3-2 lead into the third period.

The fired up Lions hit the ice hard for the third period with first Cameron Michels collecting his second goal of the game at 2:24 with help from Toby Mullin, and then Jordan Smail pushing it to 5-2 with Suddard providing the help.

Perth Lanark managed to put just one more past Zack Frawley in the Lions net, leaving the Lions with the 5-3 win.

Sunday, the Lions were on the road to Cornwall where they built a 2-0 lead over their hosts thanks to single goals in each of the first and second periods.

Tanner Hummel opened the scoring on the Lions power play at 9:45 of the first period with help from Evan Mullin and Toby Mullin.

Then at 7:56 of the second period, Suddard made it 2-0 with David Plamondon and Evan Mullin providing the assists.

In the third period, Cornwall took over putting two goals past Lions goaltender Josh Martineau to even the game 2-2.

Scoring for Cornwall in the third period were Alex Primeau and Frankie David.

This weekend the Major Midget Lions will be part of the South Dundas Minor Hockey Association’s Lions Day with a Friday night exhibition game against Leitrim beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The Midget B Lions will wrap up their weekend in a South Grenville Tournament in Prescott on Sunday.
