MORRISBURG–Last week three more senior men’s teams were off, this time to Cornwall, for a Friendly match. Keith Brannen won with his team of Sam Locke, Dave King and Lynn Loucks. Pete Zeran, Glenn Cougler, Paul Gunther and Jim Bancroft also won, while John Wilson, Karl Duncan, Keith Robertson and Wayne Pulfer tied their game.

Also in Cornwall for a one-game spiel were Sid Morrell, Raymond Benoit, Neil Williams and Bud Perry, winners in their match, while Pete Zeran, Jim Banford, Larry Ware and Earl Jeacle lost theirs.

Dave King, Jack Barkley, Rick MacKenzie and Doug Jarvis brought home steaks from a Gananoque bonspiel. Our fellows defeated a Kingston team in the morning and a Perth foursome in the afternoon to finish second overall.

Susan McIntosh took a team to Brockville. With Kathy Norg, Joanne Baker and Claire Locke, the ladies dropped their morning match to a Kingston foursome, followed by lunch in Brockville’s classy dining room. Then it was back out onto the ice against Ann Chick of Brockville, where they fought to a draw.

Four more of our ladies were at a Richmond bonspiel, this time for lunch and dinner. Alice Thompson, Susan McIntosh, Betty Locke, and Sharon Van Allen lost to Carleton Heights in the morning, and in the afternoon they played a team from Ottawa’s R.A. Centre. Our folks curled better than in their first match, but lost by three points. 

The stick bonspiel last Wednesday was a great success. Thanks to Glen Cougler for organizing it again. Also, thanks to those who assisted in the organization, food preparation, serving, maintaining the ice and tending bar. 

Kemptville, Winchester, Navan, Cornwall, Maxville, Cornwall and Morrisburg were represented. The Don McIntosh foursome from Winchester won the $80 first prize, with Malcolm MacGregor, also from Winchester, second, and Ted Herriman, Keith Robinson, Kathy Johnston and Sandra Murphy of our club, coming in third. 

In the late draw, Virginia Cunningham of Kemptville finished first, while Keith Brannen, Arnold Barkley, Eric Johnson and Bill Laurin of our club were second. The high one-gamers were from Winchester, skipped by Don McIntosh.

For the senior men, the first Parnell, which is the competition for Morrisburg, Iroquois, Cornwall and Lancaster teams, goes on Friday. Playoffs for our single entry were held last Tuesday between Dave King’s foursome and that of Sid Morrell. For the record, the tight match saw Dave King, Jack Barkley, Doug Jarvis and Sam Locke emerge victorious over Sid Morrell, Neil Williams, Andy Patenaude and Bud Perry. 

Good luck to the winner on Friday, and we invite all to come out and cheer on our champions.

The Ontario senior winter games are upon us again, and curling being one of the events, we hope to see a good crowd out to cheer on our local champs. 

For the first time in several years, the Zone 8 Championships are being held at our club. These are mixed games, and our two representatives are Andy Patenaude, Sue McIntosh, Neil Williams and Betty Locke, and Raymond Benoit, Cheryl Thompson, Pete Zeran and Ruth Kelly.

Saturday’s training session went well, and three of the people who showed up are now club members. Thanks to our coaches. Also, we’ll have the results of Sunday’s two-person bonspiel next time.

MORRISBURG–The Morrisburg Novice C2 Lions continued their great season last week, sweeping a pair of weekend games.  

The team, which has now won its last three games, moved into second place in the Novice C East Division, trailing only the other South Dundas C team, which remains undefeated through eight games.

On Saturday, Noelle Hatherall and Cooper McCooeye paced the Novice C2 Lions with two goals each in a 4-2 win over Brockville.  

Hatherall opened the scoring five minutes into the first period, with her first career goal, and added a second marker just two minutes later to give the Lions an early 2-0 lead.  Linemates Terrence Mudde and Matthew Mason assisted on Hatherall’s goals.

After Brockville got on the board to pull within a goal in the second period, McCooeye scored what proved to be the game-winner midway through the second period.  He added an insurance goal in the third.  

On Sunday, strong defensive play and great goaltending by Mason Hummel carried the Lions to a 4-1 win over Kemptville.  The defence group, consisting of Tae-lyn Rowe, Caleb Machan, Brayden Barrie, and Travis Faulkner kept the Kemptville team at bay, and Hummell made some great saves when the team needed them most.

After a scoreless first, Ruby Jansen opened the scoring for the Lions in the second period, with her second goal of the season.  After a great play at the blueline by Caleb Machan to keep the puck in the Kemptville zone, Terrence Mudde buried a rebound to make the score 2-0.  

Near the end of the second period, Cooper McCooeye took a pass from linemate Quentin Barrie, and buried a backhand to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.  After Kemptville got on the board early in the third, Matthew Mason’s third goal of the season put the game away.

The team was playing shorthanded on the weekend, as one of the team’s top scorers, Wyatt Barkley, missed the games with an injury.  He supported his teammates from the bench and will return to the lineup shortly.

The team returns to game action Saturday when they host Athens as one of the South Dundas Minor Hockey Association’s Lions day game.  On Sunday, the first of two South Dundas showdowns takes place, as the second place C2 Lions battle the first place C1 Lions.  Game time is 5 p.m.

MORRISBURG–The South Dundas Major Midget B Lions added another three strokes to their win column in recent action with wins over Smith Falls, 3-0, Char-Lan, 5-0 and North Leeds, 4-3.

Since the Lions got off to their rough start at the beginning of the season with two losses and one tie, they have rebounded with six wins and just one tie.

In 10 games they have six wins, two losses and two ties for 14 points. This gives them a three point lead over second place Cornwall in the UCMHL Major Midget B Rep East Division.

Char-Lan is holding third place with nine points, and Alexandria is fourth with seven.

The Lions were in Smiths Falls on Sunday, November 3, for the 3-0 win, with Josh Martineau in net for the shut out.

The Lions scored a goal a period for the win, beginning with a Cameron Michels goal assisted by Aaron Smith in the first period.

Then in the second, Jordan Smail and Tanner Hummel provided the setup for a Josh Black goal on the Lions power play.

Black nailed his second goal of the game early in the third period with assists going to Drew Minish and Spencer Heldens.

One night later, the Lions were in Williamstown where again they kept their opponents from the scoreboard as they went to work on a 5-0 victory.

This time out Zack Frawley was in net for the shutout.

Josh Black had another strong showing, this time with a two goal performance.

He got it started early in the first period with help from Michels.

In the second Aaron Smith from Smail, and Black unassisted, pushed the Lions advantage to 3-0.

Riley Black, unassisted, counted early in the third period to make it 4-0, and Evan Mullin finished it off with help from Hummel for the 5-0 victory.

Back home on Morrisburg ice on Thursday, November 7, the Lions were challenged by North Leeds who turned it up a notch in the third period.

The two played to a 1-1 first period tie with Jordan St. Louis scoring for the Lions from Josh Black and Tanner Hummel.

Then in the second period, Jordan Smail connected from St. Louis and Hummel for a slim 2-1 Lions edge.

North Leeds evened it early in the third period, but they couldn’t hold on.

At 5:01 of the frame Smail counted his second of the game (from Josh Black and Spencer Heldens) to put the Lions up by one.

Then just over one minute later St. Louis found the North Leeds net for his second tally with help from Cameron Michels and Riley Black to put the Lions in the driver’s seat at 4-2.

North Leeds got one more past Lions goaltender Josh Martineau from Tynan Blair but that was it and the Lions kept their winning streak alive with a 4-3 victory.

Coming up this week the Lions are at home on Saturday evening, November 16, to Perth. Game time is 8 p.m. Then on Sunday, November 17, the Lions are at the Benson Centre in Cornwall, at 8:30 p.m.

MORRISBURG – The Morrisburg Junior B Lions gave up 11 goals and scored five as they were handed a pair of losses in Eastern Ontario Junior B Hockey action on the weekend.

The Lions travelled to Alexandria, Friday night, where the St. Lawrence Division’s fourth place Glens handed them a 5-1 loss, and then on Saturday night, they were visited by the second place Winchester Hawks who collected their 13th win of the season, 6-4.

The Lions travelled to Alexandria, Friday night with just 15 skaters. John Gilmer, who was in net for the Lions loss, faced 56 Glens shots on net, while the Lions managed just 39 against Glens goaltender Maxime Beauregard.

The Glens were first on the scoreboard at 1:28 of the first period with a Tristan Sabourin goal, but the Lions Eric Evans evened it a 7:23 with help from Liam Morrow.

The tie held until 7:22 of the second period when Bradley Gabbour made it 2-1 for the Glens. At 10:35, Alex Battistelli made it 3-1.

The Lions held their own and played tough again the Glens until the last couple of minutes of the third period.

At 18:40 of the period Simon Besner pushed the Glens lead to 4-1, and Tristan Sabourin finished it off in the last minute of play with his second of the game for the 5-1 Glens win.

The Lions sat out 12 minor penalties, a five minute fighting major, two 10 minute misconducts and  two game misconducts. The Glens drew nine minor penalties, one five minute fighting major, one misconduct and one game misconduct. 

Saturday night, the St. Lawrence division’s second place Hawks were in town where they picked up a 6-4 win.

Prior to the game a service of Remembrance was held which included representatives of the Morrisburg Legion Branch 48 and the Morrisburg Legion Auxiliary. The program included the playing of the Last Post, a Moment of Silence, Rouse and the National Athen.

The Hawks went up 2-0 on goals by Alex St. Marsaille and Pat Morin in the first two minutes of play against Lions goaltender Brandon Chilton. But that was it for the Hawks scoring until early in the second period.

With just under a minutes left in the first period, the Lions got one back on their power play from Liam Morrow assisted by Christian Evans.

In the second period, the Hawks again came out of the gate flying, this time with an Austin Rothe goal just 10 seconds in.

The Hawks held on to their 3-1 advantage for another eight minutes, until the Lions, sparked by an Eric Evans short-handed goal assisted by Peter Ketcheson at 8:05, came to life.

At 9:58 Justin Lefevbre and Christian Evans provided the set up for a Zach Belaire goal to tie the game 3-3.

Then at 14:16 Ketcheson from Eric Evans and Pearson on the power play, put the Lions up 4-3.

The Lions lead, unfortunately, lasted less than a minute when the Hawks Austin Rothe counted his second goal of the game for a 4-4 tie.

Third period action was intense, and the Hawks collected their go-ahead goal from Wyatt Coghill at 11:29.

The 5-4 Hawks advantage held, and although the Lions pulled goaltender Brandon Chilton in favour of the extra attacker, they were unable to come up with the tying marker.

The sixth and final Hawks goal was scored in the empty Lions net by Rothe.

The Hawks produced 40 shots on net, while the Lions answered with 32.

The Lions sat out seven minor penalties, two five minute fighting majors, one misconduct and two game misconducts. The Hawks were assessed  five minor penalties, a five minute kneeing major, two five minute fighting majors and four game misconducts.

Coming up Saturday, November 16 the Lions will visit the Akwesasne Wolves. Game time is 7 p.m. Sunday, November 17, they are at home to the Char-Lan Rebels. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

BROCKVILLE – The Seaway District High School intermediate cross country team of 23 runners finished a very rewarding season at Memorial Park in Brockville on Wednesday, October 30, in the first running of the Upper Canada Cup Cross Country Championship.

According to  a school board press release: The event brought together 1,270 junior and intermediate athletes from schools across the Upper Canada District School Board.

The winning team in the Intermediate category was the cross country powerhouse Thousands Islands Secondary School (TISS) of Brockville, while Queen Elizabeth Public School of Perth took the junior category.

Finishing in second spot overall in the intermediate division was the Seaway Team, which, along with TISS were the only two schools to score points in all four divisions, grade 7 boys and girls and grade 8 boys and girls.

“Finishing second to a school who has twice as many students as us and beating all other schools big or small was a result of hard work from our athletes and the philosophy of team first-individual second,” said Seaway coach Robin Gibbs. “I am extremely pleased with the performance of this team at the championship meet as well as all the meets this season.”

“Despite our small team in numbers, we were able to compete with any school out there,” added Gibbs.

In the media release, meet convener Randy Givogue said the event was organized to provide our students with an additional athletic opportunity at a time when issues of childhood obesity and wellness are concerns in our society. The high school teacher said that in his youth he did not have access to high-quality athletic events such as the Upper Canada Cup, and he knows how beneficial they can be for students.

“When you have an end goal of creating student wellness, hosting a first-class meet like this snowballs into success for students because they are training in the weeks leading up to it,” said Givogue. “There is no sport as good for your heart and lungs as running.”

The awards ceremonies were presided over by former NCAA All-American track star Matt Leeder, a graduate of TISS.

Individual champions at the event were: Mason Gavin, grade 8 boys, TISS; Lilly Meek, grade 8 girls Athens District H.S.; Claire Cushing, grade 7 girls, TISS; Dylan Butcher, grade 7 boys, Brockville Collegiate.

The Seaway High team had some big results with the Grade 8 boys leading the way for a second place finish overall. They were led by Grant Wells with a sixth and David Swerdfeger with a ninth. Adding their points for the second place finish were Noah Pederson, Devin Dumoulin, Kurt Cutler and Hunter Murphy.

The Grade 8 girls posted a third place finish overall. The team consisted of Abigail Jordan, who led the girls with an eighth place finish, and included Katie Buter, Grace Brooks, Sydney Piquette, Maiah Horne and Julenea Barnhartd.

At the Grade 7 level, the boys team of Trystan Pos, Aaron Tibben, Owen Orendi, Ryan Wiltshire and Colin Minish finished fourth overall. Tibben crossed the finish line in fourth, and Minish added a 10th place finish.

At the grade 7 level, the girls team of Keira Cameron, Kristin Van Hoof, Rebecca Ferguson, Sarah Backes, Cameryn Broad and Ashley Hanna finished sixth overall. Cameron crossed the finish line in seventh spot.

MORRISBURG–Led by a hat trick performance from Devin Desnoyers, the Casselman Vikings had a fairly easy time of it here Saturday night as they skated to an 8-2 victory over the Morrisburgh Lions.

The Vikings used the win to push their winning streak to 13 games as they sit on top of the St. Lawrence Division standings with 29 points. Their closest opposition comes from the Winchester Hawks who are nipping on their heels with 26 points.

The lowly Lions are nestled into the division’s basement position with just three points.

Saturday night in Morrisburg, the Vikings were on the scoreboard twice in just over a minute of play. By the end of the first period they were up 3-0. 

They stretched it to 6-0 in the second period, before the Lions blinked the light behind goaltender Philippe Quesnel with a goal from Taylor Eamon, assisted by Chris Pearson at 18:28 of the frame.

Christian Leger counted the Lions second goal at 8:40 of the third period, with Pearson getting his second assist of the game.

Desnoyers led the Vikings scoring with his hat trick performance in the second period.

The Rideau-St, Lawrence Conference scoring leader, Taylor Widenmaier added two goals and singles were scored by Thierry Gibeault, Miguel Laurin, and Joel Adam.

Widenmaier leads the conference scoring with 37 points and joining him in the top scoring positions are teammates Joel Adam with 26 points in third place and Maxime Choquette in fourth spot with 24.

Brandon Gilmour of the Prescott Flyers breaks into the Vikings dominated scoring race at second place with 30 points.

Penalties in Saturday night’s game came in bunches, most occurring in the third period. 

Just five minor penalties were handed out in the first period, three to the Lions. Then in the second the Vikings had three players skate to the penalty box for minor infractions.

In the third period the Lions drew three minor penalties, a five  minute fighting major and five 10 minute misconducts. 

The Vikings drew four minors a five minutes fighting major, and five 10 minute misconducts.

Brandon Chilton was in net for the Lions loss. He gave up the eight Casselman goals on 49 shots on net, while Quesnell handled 30 shots from the Lions.

Coming up this Friday, November 8, the Lions at on the road to Alexandria for an 8 p.m. game. Saturday night, November 9, they host the Winchester Hawks. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Last week Alice Thompson, Betty Locke, Cheryl Thompson and Sharon Van Allen competed in the Ottawa R.A.’s Ladies’ Invitational Bonspiel. 

In the early draw of the 24 team event, our ladies first defeated a local R.A. foursome, enjoyed an excellent lunch and afterwards won out over a Navy team. 

Both games were close, and the Morrisburg quartet finished second overall in their draw. The same ladies are off to Cornwall this week for a bonspiel there.

For Wednesday night’s women’s league, Claire Locke and Susan McIntosh report that there are still openings for curlers for that night. If you haven’t curled before, come on out anyway. They have some excellent coaches for that league. We’d love to have more curlers out there, and for Tuesday afternoons as well.

A curling clinic will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for novices and those who wish to return to the game. Experienced curlers will be there, and all equipment will be provided. Just bring a clean pair of running shoes, and enjoy a light lunch at no cost. Bring along your sweetheart if you like, and sweep him/her off his/her feet.

The first two-person bonspiel will be held on Sunday, Nov. 17. There will be a sign-up sheet with full details in the lounge.

Also, a reminder of the stick bonspiel, scheduled for Nov. 13. There is a sign up sheet at the club.

The 2-2-2 schedule is out and is in the lounge. This is a series of mixed club bonspiels, with two men, two women, two games, and total age of the participants at least 222 years. Anybody care to organize one for our club? 

By the way, remember the Founders Bonspiel? This was an open men’s competition, and was always an exciting bonspiel. It would be nice to see that on again. We have still have the famous trophy and everything.

We enjoyed watching some of the best women’s and men’s curling teams in the world over the weekend. 

For the men, Canadian Glenn Howard, a world champion, triumphed over Kevin Martin, another Canadian, the current Olympic champion.

In the women’s division, Ottawa’s Rachel Homan, the current bronze medalist in world championship play, defeated Scotland’s Eve Muirhead, the reigning world champion. 

One of the wonderful things about the sport we love is that we can curl throughout our lives. However, for Glenn and Kevin, they’re nearing the end of their competitive curling years, while those young women have a lifetime of competitive curling ahead of them. What a wonderful life!

The Seaway D.H.S. Spartans picked up a pair of S.D.&G. basketball wins over the visiting North Dundas Devils last Wednesday. In junior play, the Spartans led throughout the game, 18-5 at the half for the 38-27 win. Top Spartan shooter was Jane Van Moorsel with 14 points. Maggie Wells had eight points. In senior action, it was a different story as the Spartans trailed through the first half, 10-6 at the quarter and 22-14 at the half. They re-grouped for the game’s second half and were successful in shutting down the Devils’ top shooter Julia Wouters as they worked their way to a 40-38 victory. In the first half of the game, Wouters counted 13 points, throwing three, three pointers, but in the second the Spartans held her to just seven points as they edged ahead 28-26 at the end of three quarters. They came out strong in the final and just two minutes in were up 36-29.  It was a tight finish, but Seaway held on for the 40-38 win. Tiffany Roskell dropped 18 Spartan points while Shannon Van Moorsel added 10. Christyn Veinotte counted six, Danielle Quenneville four and Danielle Whitteker two. Another curling season at the Morrisburg Curling Club is well under way. 

First, there are a couple of things to mention. For those who haven’t made it inside the club this fall, you’re in for a treat! Thanks to our executive for a beautiful makeover. 

The handicapped washroom on the ground floor, the carpeting job, the repositioned and improved bar, the extra space we seem to have developed in the lounge, new doors, and the beautiful new ramp at the entrance are some of the many assets to our old club. 

Our thanks to the Ontario Trillium grant, which helped make many of the improvements possible. 

New windows behind the former bar area, as well as an entirely new wall there, granite counters for the new bar and the kitchen window, a new paint job, and our usual fine ice preparation have gotten us off to a fine start.

We missed some final news from last April. It was the senior men’s championship. Jack Barkley, Karl Duncan, Sam Laurin and Robert Martin dropped their first match to Sid Morrell, Ron Beaupre, Bud Perry and Gerald Thompson. 

Also on April 3, Pete Zeran, Len Bellamy, Keith Robinson and Jim Millard dropped their first one in a tight match to Wally McDonald, Glen Cougler, Earl Jeacle and Larry Ware. 

On April 5th, the ‘B’ division final saw the Zeran team win out over Jack Barkley’s foursome, taking 3rd and 4th place respectively. Curling beside them, the Morrell quartet and Wally McDonald’s team battled hard in the ‘A’ final, with Sid victorious again, and Wally finishing second. 

Congratulations to all, with the Morrell team getting their names on the Fraser trophy! It was a beautiful finish to an active season. Thanks for getting the details to us.

The new bonspiel season is under way, with a team of ladies in Kemptville last week for their ten-team bonspiel. It was a one-game affair, and our ladies played Carleton Heights. The Ottawa team pulled off the win, and everyone was dressed in witches’ costumes, with prizes for all. Our curlers were Greta McGann, Cheryl Thompson, Yvonne Mabo and Linda Murphy. Good start to the season, folks!

With the 2013-14 season, we have, as always, some new curlers, and some who have dropped out. We hope that those who have retired from the game will come in to watch and visit with the others. Curling began on the week of the 15th. It wasn’t possible to schedule the ‘swing and sweep’ this year, but there will be a number of club bonspiels through the year. Stay tuned.

For those who haven’t yet registered, see the senior men’s coordinator, Dave King, for the afternoon curling, or Alice Thompson for the women’s Tuesday afternoon league. 

Joe McCooeye is looking after the Tuesday night men’s league again, as they do battle for the Calvert Trophy. The Thursday morning league is again being handled by Ruth Kelly, the Thursday night competitive curlers by Ian Wilson, and the Friday night league by Mahlon Locke.

Information re outside bonspiels is posted as it comes in, and we will have a number of local ones: the first Two Person ‘Spiel will be announced shortly, the Stick ‘Spiel, coordinated by Glenn Cougler, will be held on Wed., Nov. 13, the Alzheimer’s Bonspiel on Sat. Nov. 23, and the Women’s Invitational on Tues., Dec. 3rd. 

Also, we need two teams for the Gamble Mixed Bonspiel on Nov. 16 in Russell.
