Midget B Lions add win and tie, now share first

The South Dundas Novice B Lions capped off a hugely successful season in Brockville, on Monday, March 26, when they played to a 1-1 tie against the Brockville #1 Braves to win the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League Championship, five points to three. The win capped a playoff run in which the Lions did not lose a game.  Their final five point series went four games, with three of the games ending in a tie and the Lions scoring the lone victory in Brockville on Friday, night March 23. The South Dundas Atom B Lions packed a powerful offensive punch here Saturday, November 29 when they connected for a 11-2 win over the hosting NGS Braves.

The Braves struck early, just 59 seconds into the first period with an unassisted goal by Mason Mekker. 

Cam Shaver evened the score at 7:58, when he took a pass from Quade Mullin, head faked a defender then fired a wrist shot past Braves goaltender Jane McManus.  

Just over a minute later, Spencer Barclay set up Sam Connors to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.  

Braden McRae tied the game 2-2, after taking a feed from Matthew Lalonde at 3:24, and it appeared that the period would likely end that way until Dryden Buter, from James Martens, put the Lions in front for good with 1:16 left on the clock.

The Lions didn’t look back from that point on and scored four more times in the second.  

Owen Patterson got it rolling when he finished off a pretty passing play by his linemates Buter and Martens and Monty Dejong got an unassisted marker to make it 5-2.  

Buter made it 6-2, assisted by Patterson and with just 37 seconds left in the period, D-man Nate Paulino got his second of the season, unassisted.

The third period was similar to the second period, with the Lions putting up another four goals.  

Dejong got his second of the game after taking a pass from Shaver to make it 8-2.  

The Lions got more offence from their defence when Stefan Kronstal got his first goal of the year, unassisted, and Patterson made it 10-2 with help from Dejong.  

Buter completed a three goal performance after being setup by his winger Martens to close out the scoring at 2:38 and give the Lions the 11-2 win.

Brayden Lalonde-Thomspon who was called up from the Atom C Lions to play goal, had a good effort in net.

This was the Lions fourth victory in a row.  

Lions next action will see them on the road this Saturday in Perth tournament.  

Sunday, the Lions will host South Grenville, and are hoping for a win to “leapfrog” them in the standings.  The Lions currently sit third in the East, a point behind South Grenville with two games in hand.

Once again it was Cheryl Lowe leading the way at the weekly Cedar Glen Ladies night last Wednesday. Lowe shot a 44 to claim the A flight low gross prize while close behind was Lynne Shaw with a 46. A flight net winners were Sheilia Bush and Pat Reaney.

In B flight it was Christina Yelle with the win thanks to a 45, while Barb Barkley zeroed in on the low net win. Sandra Julien posted a 55 for the win in C flight, and Jane Hess was the top D flight shooter with a 62. Cory Witteveen scored the low net in C flight. Closest to the pin shots were made by Gerry McEwan on the par three sixth hole and Sue McMillan on the par three ninth.

In men’s action on Thursday night, Kurtis Barkley led the field with a 36. Jeff Whitteker was the now shooter in B flight with a 41 and Liam Morrow shot a 44 to win C flight. The first low gross prize in D flight was claimed by Josh Freak. Net winners were Greg Vandellan in A flight, Mitch Hutt in B and Ron Rutley in C.

Other wins went to Kurtis Barkley and Mitch Hutt for their birdies on 10, Jim Boyd for a birdie on 12, Larry Barlow for a birdie on 15 and Byron Brutn and Liam Morrow for pars on 16 and 18 respectively. 

The week at Cedar Glen kicked off with the Tuesday night Scramble and Wing night. This week’s low net was won by Derek and Shelly Whitteker with second place claimed by Merle and Pat Rreany. The low gross (31) was shot by Kurtis Barkley and Duane Young.
