Commemorations planned, public attendance being discouraged

SOUTH DUNDAS – Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout South Dundas are going ahead with COVID-19 related precautions put in place. While ceremonies will move ahead, the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command is discouraging public attendance to ceremonies due to limited outdoor space and physical distancing requirements.

In South Dundas there will be four ceremonies to commemorate Remembrance Day beginning with the Iroquois ceremony on November 8th at 2:30 p.m. That ceremony will take place at the Iroquois cenotaph on Elizabeth Drive.

Morrisburg’s ceremony will be held at the cenotaph in front of the South Dundas Justice Building (pictured below) on November 11th at 11 a.m. The Matilda cenotaph ceremony will also take place at the same time in front of Matilda Hall in Dixon’s Corners.

Prior to the 11 a.m. ceremonies, the Friends of the Battle of Crysler Farm will hold a ceremony at the battle monument near Upper Canada Village around 9 a.m.

Ceremonies will be limited to a small commemoration and wreaths will be placed in advance of each cermony. All local ceremonies will be held outdoors and public attendance is discouraged to help prevent further spread of COVID-19.

While many ceremonies will be streamed online this year, none of the South Dundas ceremonies are.

RCLs are encouraging watching online events or private reflections of remembrance.

The National Remembrance Day Ceremony will begin just before 11 a.m. in Ottawa and will be available on television networks and streamed online for internet viewers.
