Hydro is coming to Morrisburg’s Industrial Park.
Municipality of South Dundas council members approved the installation of eight kilovolt and 44 kilovolt hydro service along the north side of Campbell Street and eight kilovolt hydro service on the west side at a cost of roughly $93,397.
Armed with estimates from Rideau St. Lawrence Utilities, public works director Chris Bazinet presented council with four installation options during the August 16 council meeting, indicating the 44 kilovolt option would “provide South Dundas with a differentiator,” which could attract heavy industry to the park.
Bazinet assured council the installation would cause minimal disturbance to surrounding neighbours. He also confirmed economic development officer Rob Hunter had been consulted.
“Are there provisions for an off-sharing program,” councillor Marc St. Pierre asked. “Will we be receiving any benefit back from future purchasers percentage-wise based on usage?”
Bazinet said he believed that would probably fall under a condition of sale.
“That was in the original business case back with the prior council,” he said. “But we have no mechanism in place at this point.”
He assured council the cost of installing hydro is less than previous investments made to the lot.
In response to mayor Evonne Delegarde’s inquiry about available gas services, Bazinet said installing the service now would be a fairly hefty upfront cost to the municipality.
For prospective buyers, he said the service is already available close by, but they would have to get it themselves.
“We don’t want to distract future potential buyers in the area, but if costs keep rising every time, what is the payback,” St. Pierre asked. “What is the payback on taxation? What’s the payback on potential land use? There are a lot of unknowns.”
