Main Street Morrisburg gaining momentum

From May 2nd to 9th, food banks across Canada are coming together to participate in the Every Plate Full Food Drive. 

The goal of the campaign is to fill the empty plates of Canadians in need this summer.

As part of this campaign, the Dundas County Food Bank is organizing a county-wide community food drive.

“It’s always difficult for us at this time of year to keep up with demand for our services,” said Ian McKelvie, DCFB Administrator. 

“By participating in this national campaign, we’re hoping the community will come together to make a difference and help us stock our shelves so that none of our neighbours go hungry this summer.”

The Every Plate Full Food Drive will take place on Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Andy’s Foodland in Winchester, Giant Tiger in Morrisburg and Iroquois Foodland. 

Another food drive will take place on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riley’s Valu-mart in Morrisburg.

Every year at this time Curves offers up what Kelly Keeler, owner/manager of the Morrisburg location calls a win-win. 

New members can join for a $30 donation or a bag of groceries for the Dundas County Food Bank. 

The theme for this year’s food drive was feed the need. 

Curves gained several new members during the two-week promotion, and March 28 the money and grocery donations were handed over to the Dundas County Food Bank. 

“In addition to the new members, many of our other members, visitors, and staff donated too,” said Keeler. “People here are very supportive of this.” Monetary donations of $385 and 856.5 pounds of food were collected during this year’s effort. 

Rev. Sue McCollough, who accepted the donation on behalf of the food bank said that efforts like this mean everything to the food bank. “Without support from organizations like this one, our food bank would be in dire straits. It’s because of efforts like this that we can continue our programs to feed the hungry.”

“This year the township has decided or is unable to participate,” said councillor Evonne Delegarde at the April 3rd South Dundas council meeting.

The topic in question was the South Dundas Spring Home and Trade Show coming to the Morrisburg Arena this April 20th and 21st.

She told council that the South Dundas Chamber of Commerce “is wondering if there’s anything to be done to help the township participate.”

Chief administrative officer Stephen McDonald replied, “last year, the main purpose of going in was to promote the website. We certainly hadn’t planned for it to be a yearly ongoing thing.”

“We have numerous projects on the go and decided this was a project we couldn’t take on this year.”

“We’ve just gone through extensive public consultation.”

“Staff is also in the community. Staff works 35 plus hours per week. Whether we’re at the rink, the restaurant, the grocery store,” continued McDonald, “people don’t hesitate to bend our ear.”

He pointed out that “we have nothing against the Chamber.”

Delegarde made a final comment, pointing out that “the fire department is taking part in the trade show so…,” she paused, “maybe next year?”
