Season ending sweep for local curlers

It was a packed house at the Morrisburg Curling Club on Saturday, as 12 teams slid onto the ice to wrap up the 2015/16 season with a closing “fun” bonspiel.

The day began with the bonspiel that produced winning teams in two draws, and ended with the championship play of the mixed competitive league and the senior men in the evening.

Winning this year’s Morrisburg Curling Club Championship was the team skipped by Larry Cooper. Playing lead was Daryl McDonnell, second was Chris Barkley and third was Nancy Barkley.

The Coopers defeated Ian Wilson, 8-5 in nine ends for the championship.

The 10-end game started off with a blank first end, and Cooper added single points in each of the second and third ends.

The Wilson rink put together three points in the fourth to go up 3-2, and Cooper, with the hammer, blanked the fifth end.

In the sixth, Cooper threw a huge shot for two points to go up 4-3. He increased it to 5-3, when he stole the seventh.

Wilson got two points back in the eighth to tie it 5-5, but Cooper’s three in the ninth ended it.

Playing for the Wilson team were Ewan Wilson (lead), Mike Staebler (second) and Scott Lane (vice).

In the senior men’s action, it was Peter Zeran versus the Sid Morrell team skipped by Donnie MacMillan.

McMillan shut out Zeran until the fifth end, when the latter got on board with a single point to bring the score to 7-1.

Zeran continued to chip away at the MacMillan lead. He added two in the sixth and another two in the seventh to get it to 7-5, but that was it. MacMillan took the win, 8-5, in the eighth (and final) end.

Playing for the Morrell team were lead Rick Astley, second Earl Jeacle and third Neil Williams. MacMillan has been subbing for an injured Morrell for the past few weeks.

Playing on the Zeran team were lead Larry Ware, second Peter Byvelds and vice Len Bellamy.

Winners of the closing bonspiel were Al Harriman in the early draw, and Pete Zeran in the second draw.

Playing for Harriman were Paul Gunther, Sharon Van Allen and Linda Murphy.

For Zeran, the players were Eric Johnson, Paula Locke and Carolyn Beckstead.

The closing bonspiel play consisted of two, six-end games and the early draw featured both the Harriman and Kathy Norg team going undefeated.

Norg, with Carol Dawley, Heather Black and Maurice Kolff, finished a close second behind Harriman on points.
