A $1.2 million government investment in the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario, in Morrisburg, will allow for the purchase of six pieces of heavy equipment, meaning 18 more apprentices can graduate each year.
Jeff Leal, MPP for Peterborough, was in Morrisburg Monday to announce the provincial funding to local media and a new group of pre-apprentice students gathered on site at the Morrisburg campus for the occasion.
“The funding announced today to purchase additional equipment will allow the facility to train more apprentices and ensure students have the hands-on experience they require to thrive in the skilled trades sector,” said Leal.
The OEITO is also receiving funds to help train youth, new Canadians, and Aboriginal people to become heavy equipment operators of backhoes, excavators, heavy trucks and dozers.
“I am proud that we are supporting so many projects that will bring new equipment and high demand training programs to the local markets that need it,” noted Reza Moridi, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.
“As a not-for-profit, the cost of replacing ageing equipment is always a challenge,” said Scott Hodgson, OEITO CFO. “We rely heavily on this funding to grow our fleet in order to keep up with the demands of the industry.”
