Food costs negatively impact local Food Bank bottom line

Despite the fact that the Dundas County Food Bank usage numbers are staying about the same, the charity ended 2015 with a $17,378 deficit and they are projecting about the same size deficit for 2016.

“To put it quite simply, since 2014, we have expended more on food distribution than we have collected in donations,” said Terry Triskle, chair of the Dundas County Food Bank board of directors.

While the food bank has tried to cope with increasing numbers of clients over past years, the most recent statistics show that in 2015, the numbers seem to have levelled off. Having peaked in 2014 with 2,063 visits, the 2015 numbers show that food bank visits were down, just a bit, to 2,013 visits.

Of those visits, 44 per cent were to the Winchester location while 56 per cent were to the Morrisburg location.

Overall, donations of both food and money are staying about the same from year to year, but it’s the high cost of food that is hitting the food bank hard.

In 2014, food purchases cost the food bank $73,608 and in 2015 food purchases came in at $85,405. “That’s almost a $12,000 increase in just one year,” said treasurer Wendy Weagant.

With those purchases, they are still serving about the same number of people.

“Despite our efforts, our food expenses continue to increase,” said Ian McKelvie, administrator for the Dundas County Food Bank. “Over the next several weeks, I plan to meet with the managers of grocery stores in our area to see if they can help reduce our costs.”
