Waterfront progress stalled

The Morrisburg Waterfront Committee is ready to break ground on  a major project, but the group of volunteer members of this committee of council have not yet been able to line up the support it needs to get the project moving forward.

Waterfront committee chair, Brian Veinotte spoke about the committee’s intention to start with the commemoration square project, which would relocate the existing war memorial and artillery gun from the waterfront location near the snack stand, to a proper place of honour and respect nearer the Seaway Legion Branch #48 in Morrisburg.

“We need your endorsement,” said Veinotte asking for council’s in principle support of the plan and project.

“As it stands now, we’re stuck,” he said explaining that about 30 members of the local Legion got together and held a vote, not to allow the monument and gun to be moved.

“That’s a problem that throws a wrench in the project,” said Veinotte.

He explained that although the gun and the monument belong to the Legion, they are located on municipal property, giving the municipality the ultimate authority.

Although some Legion executive members and the waterfront committee have met already, councillor Marc St. Pierre wants to have Legion representatives at the next waterfront committee meeting to become part of the solution.
