Earl Hummell

A resident of Morrisburg, Earl Starr Hummell, passed away on September 18, 2015, with his loving family at his side, at the Cornwall Hospice, following an illness of four years. He was in his 83rd year.

He was born on September 22, 1932, in Morrisburg, to his parents, Frank Nicholas Hummell and Mabel Beatrice Hummell (nee Eamon). He was the youngest of 10 children.

As a young boy, he learned how to swim. His father taught him both how to catch and clean fish: fishing would become one of his lifetime pleasures.

Following graduation from high school, he worked for one year for the Department of Highways, then joined Ontario Hydro where he was employed for the next 39 years, until his retirement.

He remained a carefree bachelor for 32 years, fishing, hunting and enjoying football games. Then he met Sheila Kay Muxfeldt. Their marriage was held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Brockville on February 19, 1966. They were married for 49 years, and together raised a daughter, Kimberley Anne  Hummell (David Gravelle) of Ottawa.

After their marriage, Earl and Sheila built a house on the Madawaska River near Arnprior where they lived for 34 years before moving back to Morrisburg. During his time in Arnprior, Earl worked for the Forestry crew of Ontario Hydro.

Earl and Sheila did a lot of camping and travelling. They went to garage sales and auctions, finding lots of antiques and treasures. Earl was good at restoring antiques and loved collecting. He and Sheila also enjoyed playing cards at the Legion.

Earl was a proud member of the Indian River Hunt Camp. The Camp has been in existence for 63 years, and Earl was the last of the  six original members. He was in charge of the grocery shopping and preparing the evening suppers at the camp.

He also belonged to the Friendly Brothers Lodge 143, and had been a mason since 1960. He was an associate of the Seaway Legion  branch 48 in Morrisburg, for many years.

Earl was the loving grandfather of Cheyenne and Caleb. He enjoyed his family, and his grandchildren were his delight. He could often be seen reading or playing games with them.

The last few years, Earl’s heath declined and Sheila nursed him day and night. Earl will be sorely missed by his friends and family.

He was the  loving husband of Sheila Hummell, and the dear father of Kimberley Anne. Beloved grandfather of Cheyenne and Caleb, he was also dear brother of Mabel (Richard) Justus, and brother-in-law of Audrey Hummell and Leroy Wallace. He will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Mary Wallace, Jean Vaughan and Ruth Gibbons, and by his brothers Glenn, Ralph, John, Frank and Ross.

He was  also predeceased by his sister-in-law Eva and brothers-in-law Frank Vaughan and William Gibbons.

Friends were received at the Parker Funeral Home, Morrisburg, on Sunday, September 20.

The funeral service was held at Lakeshore Drive United Church on September 21 at 1 p.m., with the reverend Janet Evans officiating. Internment was at the Fairview Cemetery, Mariatown.

Pallbearers were Richard Vaughan, Gordon Vaughan, John Vaughan, Donald Gibbons, John Bell and Robert Barclay.

Honourary pallbearers were William Vaughan, Gerald Crowder, Stephen Crowder, Ronald Latimer, Peter Penner and Michael Barclay.

Memorial donations to the Cornwall Hospice or to Winchester District Memorial Hospital would be gratefully acknowledged by  Earl’s family.
