Doug Hodgson

A resident of 9 Grove Street in Iroquois, for the past 12 years, Doug Hodgson passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Saturday, July 18, 2015, following a brief battle with cancer.  He was 72.

Doug was born in Toronto on May 13, 1943, to his parents Stanley and Lily Hodgson (nee Duval).

Doug had an amazing wife in Carole Lawlor whom he married on November 30, 1968.

The mid 1980’s were an exciting time for Doug, as he became a self-employed business owner and a proud father of a little bundle of joy named Craig.  He now had a game plan!!  Few people truly have a long term game plan but Doug had one.

Doug grew his family and business over the next number of years in the Toronto area, and when it came time to retire he located his family to the Morrisburg/Iroquois area.

This area always had a soft spot for Doug.  There was a large dynamic family located here, friends, and most of all the ability to fish or hunt when he wanted to.

For many years one of the highlights for Doug was travelling to Morrisburg on the long weekend  in August to participate in the annual Tubie Race along with his friend Danny “Dutchy” Cassell.   Doug and Danny won the race for several years, and they became affectionately known as the “kings of the river”.

Doug had many victories in the years after his retirement while keeping the duck and fish population in check.

He also had the pride of watching his son Craig become a self-employed business owner when he purchased Iroquois Pizza on November 1, 2006. What better feeling could Doug have had but to watch his son follow in his footsteps.

Craig also gave Doug other victories… Craig’s fiancee Angel, two beautiful little girls named Ayva and Savanah and a little grandson named Hunter.

Doug was a great father and an amazing poppa. He always had kids climbing all over him and the patience and love for the kids that all poppas should have. A father’s job is to support, provide and protect your family.  Any other victories are a bonus and Doug achieved them all.

There was always a positive feel in the air when Doug was around and he was always fun to be around.

Doug was all about the outdoors…hunting, fishing, camping, boating, but his main goal was to catch big fish and he did that on several occasions.

He will be fondly remembered for his big smile, his pleasant demeanour and his love for his family and friends.

Doug is survived by his wife of 48 years Carole and his son Craig (Angel) of Iroquois.  He was proud grandfather of Hunter, Ayva and Savanah.  He is also survived by several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Saturday, July 25th from 11 a.m. until time of the Memorial Service at 1 p.m. which was conducted by Father Chisholm.

Interment of cremated remains followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Morrisburg.  Pallbearers were Craig Hodgson, Mike Lawlor, Chuck Lawlor and Arnold “Red” Lawlor.

Donations to the Humane Society or Dundas County Hospice would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.  Online condolences may be made at marsdenmclaughlin.com.
