One under par wins Iroquois Men’s Open

Prescott golfer, Bruce Perrin put up a one under par 71 on the Iroquois golf course, Saturday to easily win the 2014 Men’s Open Tournament in a field of 56 competitors.

For the tournament, the players played the back holes 10 through 18 first, and then moved over onto the course’s front nine holes to finish it off.

Perrin played the course’s front nine holes at one under par 36, and was even on the back nine with a 35 for his 71.

Next up was Kevin Duvall who plays out of the Morrisburg Golf Club. Duvall was right on Perrin’s heels with a 75 (38-37) which gave him the low net in A flight with a 64.

Despite the high wind of the day, some solid scores were turned in with nine of the 17 A flight players breaking the 80 barrier.

Iroquois club member, Les Gilmour carded a strong 76 to finish third overall, and then with 77s were Matt O’Neil  of Morrisburg, Shawn Lapier of Iroquois and Kevin`Byrd of Prescott.

Lance LePage of Morrisburg shot a 78, and Troy Gilmour of Grafton and Brent Mattice of Iroquois tied with 79s.

Rob Kimmerly, the defending 2013 champion, came in with an 81.

In B flight, it was Jamie Pederson who took charge with a very solid 78. He posted a 40 on the front nine and added a 38 on the back for his winning B flight total.

Next up were Bill Blad of Greely and Bob Mann of Morrisburg with 81s. David Cassell of Prescott, Pete Zeran of Upper Canada and Liam Morrow of Cedar Glen in Williamsburg  all posted 82s. Cassell’s 82 gave him the low net score with a 68.

Finishing off the top B flight players were Richard Guthro from Upper Canada with an 83, and  Chris Barkley of  Iroquois and Jordi MacDonald of Upper Canada tied with 84s. 

Upper Canada’s Sam Laurin and Iroquois’ Kent Smith finished the day tied with 82s. With Smith not available for a playoff, Laurin got the nod for the flight’s top spot and Smith had C flight low net with a 66.

Eldon Horner (no club affiliation) and Mike Hlurchuk were next up with 88s and Mike Laurin of Upper Canada was carded an 89.

Lorey Blad of Prescott and Don Poland of Iroquois tied with 90s.

Rain cuts Valley League play to nine holes, Summer Heights wins

Hurricane Irene was the big winner at the annual Men's Valley League hosted by the Summer Heights Golf Links here on Sunday.

Play was halted when the rain became too much, and this year's Valley League championship was decided using nine hole rounds.

At the end of nine holes, it was the hosting Summer Heights team that claimed the D. MacLennan Championship trophy with 641 strokes.

Cedar Glen was second with 649 and Morrisburg third with 660. Iroquois posted 680 strokes and Sandy Row had 723.

The Morrisburg team won the tournament on its home turf in 2010.

Successfully defending his title was Cedar Glen golfer Kurtis Barkley who claimed the Millard Trophy for low gross in A flight with a 37. Barkley won the trophy in Morrisburg last year.

The B flight win and the Sports Unlimited Trophy was went to Morrisburg's Kirk Barkley, while Frank Miller of Summer Heights successfully defended his 2010 low gross C flight win with a 47. The win allowed Miller to hang onto the S.H. Fun Night Trophy for another year.

Stepping to the front of the senior category was Morrisburg's Bob Mann who claimed the T. Parker Trophy with a 42 (retro tie-breaker).

The low gross 'junior' Highlands trophy was won by Bradley MacKay of Summer Heights with a 43.

Mike Deschamps of Morrisburg won the A net Julien Trophy, and Darrell Shelp picked up the B net Cedar Glen Trophy. The C net Lorne Barkley Memorial Trophy went to Rob Robinson of Cedar Glen.

The team low net Comrie-Blakely Trophy was won by Morrisburg.

Terry Barkley of Cedar Glen won the Russ Fader Net Trophy in the president's position and Rick Cauvier of Sandy Row picked up the Hugh Hutchinson Memorial Trophy for low net among the club captains.

Bantam B Reps claim east division crown

MORRISBURG–It was a battle to the end, but Monday night, in front of their hometown fans, the South Dundas Bantam B Rep Lions claimed the 2011/12 Upper Canada Minor Hockey League’s East Division championship.

After a tough challenge from the Char-Lan Rebels in semi-final action, the Lions met head on with the Cornwall Colts who finished the regular season in first place, five points ahead of the second place Lions.

Game one of the four point championship series was played in Cornwall on Sunday (March 4), and the Lions skated away with a 3-1 victory to claim the first two points.

That set the stage for the championship, 3-2 victory, on home ice Monday night.

The Colts were first on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 first period lead on a Brandon Denault goal.

The Lions got lucky in the second when, in a scramble in front of the Cornwall goaltender the puck ended up going in off a Colts defenceman.

Drew Minish was credited with the tying goal and Lions captain Andrew Jarvis got the assist.

Just over the halfway mark of the third period, Jarvis took charge when he picked off a  Colts cross-ice pass at their blue line

The Lions were killing off a penalty when Jarvis made the interception, beat the Colts defenceman and then made a great move on their goaltender to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.

The 2-1 Lions advantage held until the Colts pulled their goalender and Quinn Bennis fed Josh Black a pass that he deposited into the empty net with 1:16 left on the clock.

However, the game wasn’t over yet. The Colts returned their goaltender to the crease and then launched an attack which resulted in a Kristian Palmer tally with 26 seconds left in the game.

That would be it, and the Lions held on for the 3-2 championship win.

Zach Frawley, in the Lions net, made some huge saves in the dying minutes of the game to allow the Lions to hold on, and the Colts goalie was called upon several times to stop the Lions from stretching their lead.

In Cornwall on Sunday, the Lions went up 1-0 in the first period when defenceman Josh Black moved in front of the Colts net to put a rebound shot past Leroux. Quinn Bennis and Toby Mullin earned the assists.

In the second, Drew Minish, from  Randy Fawcett, sent Jarvis in all alone to beat Leroux on a back hand shot.

Connor Lapointe got one back for the Colts to end the second period with the Lions in the lead 2-1.

Midway into the third period, Quinn Bennis, with help from Josh Black and Toby Mullin on the Lions power play, iced the cake with the Lions third goal and that was it.

In semi-final action, the Lions had their hands full against the Char-Lan Rebels. 

After opening the series with a  slim 1-0 victory, the Lions were unable to shut the Rebels down, as they came back with a strong 4-0 victory.

That forced a game three, back in Morrisburg last Thursday, March 1. This time out, the Lions didn’t underestimate their opponents, and with an unbeatable Frawley in net, they went to work for a 6-0 victory.

Aaron Smith led the Lions’ scoring charge with two goals, while singles came from the sticks of Evan Mullin, Ben Michels, Andrew Jarvis and Josh Black.

The South Dundas Lions will now meet the winners of the West Division series currently underway between Perth and Smiths Falls for the league championship.

The series will be played following next week’s March break.

Lightning strikes New Blue

MORRISBURG–The New Blue were struck by Lightning in Men’s Roller Hockey League action on Thursday, June 28.
A storm was brewing as the two went into the evening action and then played to a 2-2 first period draw. At the end of two, the league’s so far undefeated New Blue were holding a 5-3 lead.
That’s when White Lightning struck, not once but five consecutive times to move into a commanding 8-5 lead.
The New Blue got one more against winning goaltender Barret Brundige in the 8-6 Lightning win.
Dave Summers led Lightning to their fourth win of the season with four goals, while Rob Thurler added a pair and Steve Mattice and Tyler Brown counted singles.
Answering for the New Blue were Connor Hodgson with three and Garreth Cochrane, Randy Markell and Tommy Keyes all with singles.
The New Blue continue to hold the league’s top spot with 10 points, while Lightning is close behind with eight.
In other action the Red Rockets downed the Morewood Monkeys 15-11.
The Monkeys enjoyed a third period rally that saw them out score the Rockets 6-3 but it was too little too late.
Chad McMillan had a big night for the Rockets with five goals, while Chris Phifer contributed four. Darrel Moore, Dean Moore and Justin Heuff had two goals apiece.
Answering for the Monkeys were Tyler Jones and Cody Carruthers with three apiece, Mike Thompson with a pair and Brad Johnston, Chris Embury and Jake Byers with singles.
