The South Dundas Midget B 1 House Lions gained the upper hand with a 4-1 victory over the North Dundas Demon 1s here Sunday night, which gives them three points to the Demons one as they head into game three in Winchester, later this week.
The four point series opened last Thursday, February 25, in Morrisburg, with a 2-2 tie, that had the fans on the edge of their seats right until the very end.
The Lions took a 1-0 first period lead on a Matt Backes goal assisted by Drew Minish and Ben Byvelds.
It wasn’t until late in the second period that the Demons, Owen Helmer evened it, 1-1.
The 1-1 tie held until Tyler Nelson took charge with 3:05 left in the game to put the Lions up 2-1. Helpers came from Backes and Byvelds.
Again the Lions couldn’t hold on, and Helmer collected his second counter off Lions goaltender Christian Francis with the clock showing 1:52.
There was plenty of action and opportunities at both ends of the ice in the final 1:51, but the 2-2 tie held giving each team a single point in the four-point series heading into game two played in Winchester, Sunday night, February 28.
In Winchester, it was the Lions all the way with Lauren Henry, unassisted, putting them ahead 1-0 late in the first period.
It stayed that way until late in the second period when an unassisted counter from Drew Minish pushed the Lions advantage to 2-0.
The Demons got one back at 9:33 of the third period from Brandon VanBruinessen assisted by Kyle Findlay to cut the gap to 2-1 but that lasted less than two minutes when Kody Arsenault (assisted by Tyler Nelson) collected his first of two goals to restore the two goal Lions lead.
Arsenault finished it off with 4:27 left on the clock for the 4-1 Lions victory.
The Lions who finished the season in the East Division’s fifth place will be looking to complete the series win this Thursday night in Winchester, with either a tie or a win.
The Demons finished the regular season in second place.
