South Dundas Novice B Lions back in the win column

IROQUOIS–The Iroquois Lawn Bowling Club opened its season with a big to thank the participants of the Garry Banford Memorial Fishing Derby for the $1,000 donation to the club. 

“This was a wonderful surprise and very timely because the Iroquois Lawn Bowling Club needed financial support,” said Ron Beaupre in a press release to The Leader.

“Our club membership has dwindled over the last few years, and we are looking for people in the area to get out and give our game a try.” 

Play at the Iroquois lawn bowling court located next to the trailer park on Carman Road at Elizabeth Drive is three evenings a week, Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays beginning at 7 p.m. 

This location, affords a beautiful view of the St. Lawrence, and often enjoys a beautiful summer-time breeze off the water, making it an idyllic spot for the sport.

This year the club has plans to buy a set of bowls for juniors that will enable families to come out together for a game. 

The club is also encouraging local businesses to consider family days for their employees that would include golf, swimming, tennis and lawn bowling with picnic lunches at the Iroquois Lawn Bowling clubhouse.

Coffee clubs, school groups, service clubs and sports teams should consider coming out for a game just to have a new experience.

The Iroquois Ladies Lawn Bowling Club was organized in the old village on June 30, 1934. After the Seaway moved the town back from the river, the new court was built and maintained by the Village of Iroquois and later the amalgamated township of South Dundas.

However, when the Iroquois Golf Club was privatized, the greens keepers, who also maintained the lawn bowling green were no longer available. 

Although the club was able to hire the golf club staff for one year thanks to a 50 percent subsidy from the Township Recreation Department, the next year that subsidy was reduced by 33 percent. As a result the lawn bowlers hired one man to cut the court regularly. 

This year there is no financial support from the township, even though the court is still their property,” says Beaupre. “We are now left alone to find a way to pay for maintaining the green, which will cost about $4,000 this year. There are only three lights left in service, which will restrict our playing time early and late in the season.”

Beaupre explains that club has purchased mowers and yearly expenses are for fertilization, aeration, top dressing and insect (ant) control on the court. In addition there are the costs to maintain the motorized equipment and the sharpening of the mower blades ($200).

Lawn bowling is much like curling on grass. You pitch the bowl off to one side or the other, giving it just the right weight to get it near the “jack,” a small white ball. 

The bowl will curl a few feet just as it slows down. 

“After a few games, you will find yourself enjoying this game and the company of a group of very friendly people,” says Beaupre. “We have lots of extra sets of bowls, and we enjoy helping new members learn the game. Our court is in excellent condition thanks to the hard work of our club members.”

South Dundas Lions Bantam Rep player, Nash Nesbitt drops the puck to officially open Saturday night’s festivities organized by the South Dundas Minor Hockey Association. In total the fund raising event raised $3,200 for the local association which included a very generous $1,500 donation made back by the Sens Alumni. The evening included a game between the Ottawa Senators Alumni and a heavily stacked local team made up of the coaches in the local organization.  Taking the face off for the coaches (left) is South Dundas Minor Hockey president Jeff Van Moorsel, and for the Sens Alumni is Dan Frawley a former Pittsburg Penguin player who now lives in the area. Thanks to the donation of an autographed Sidney Crosby helmet arranged by Frawley, the evening also raised $1,200 for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario where Nash received his recent cancer treatment. Joining Nash, l-r, are his dad Earl, Sylvie Corbin (Director, Major Gifts for the CHEO Foundation) and Nash’s mom, Tammy. Pictured at the top and right is action during an Initiation game played during the intermission. The young players were joined by several of the Ottawa Alumni players including goaltender Mark Cavellin and #19 Brian Richardson. Although Nash Nesbitt scored twice for the Coaches on penalty shots, and Randy ‘Tug’ Mullin (assisted by Bruce Mullin and Rob Casselman) and Mike Barclay (assisted by Jeff VanMoorsel and Joe Hummel) added singles, the coaches remained well behind their opponents. The coaches had great goaltending from Frank Waytowich and Ben Henry and several great scoring opportunities. Twice David Lapier was set up by little brother Shawn and twice he missed, Steve Martineau was stymied on a break-away, and Brian Shaver, Joe Hummel, George Menges, Jamie Smith, Shawn Hummel and Gary Hart all had their chances. Coach Claude Plamondon said after the game, he would have his squad much better prepared, next time.

Two big days of top-notch curling provided the action at the Morrisburg Curling Club on the weekend and when the last rock came to rest late Sunday afternoon, it was teams from Metcalfe and Winchester stealing the shows.

Both bonspiels involved two rinks each from the Russell, Winchester, Metcalfe and Morrisburg Curling Clubs.

In the ladies Broder Cup action on  Saturday, it was the two Winchester entries who claimed the wins.

The ‘A’ win went to the Winchester team skipped by Janet Lapier  The rink included Janet Levere, Janet Thompson and Rhonda Mark.

The Lapier rink kicked off the day by defeating Russell’s  Martha Stolk. In game two they defeated Morrisburg’s Susan McIntosh. 

Curling with McIntosh were Kathy Norg, Leanne McCooeye and Wendy Casselman. The McIntosh entry won their first game against Metcalfe’s Olivia Woods before being eliminated by Winchester.

For the final Winchester, met up with Greta McGann whose team members were Jenna Herrington, Cathy Hardy and Rachelle Eves.

The McGann team opened by knocking off Metcalfe’s Sue Stacey. They upended Russell’s Jill Miller in the semi-final to advance to the championship.

Lapier struck early in the final with a four point first end. Although McGann hung in, she was never able to recover from the deficit.

Winchester’s Tina Asselin skipped her rink to the B championship, by defeating Russell’s Martha Stolk. Team members were Mandy Peddle, Diane Spurr and Joyce Ouelette.   

In the Little Rocks ‘Big 4’ action, Sunday, it came down to the wire between the two Metcalfe teams, with the Ally Broadhurst team claiming the win. Curling for Broadhurst were Emma Lee, Kaitlyn Kennedy and Katie Broadhurst. They defeated their fellow Metcalfe rink of Jocelyn Taylor, Maren Cott, Caroline Taylor and Victoria Estrada

Representing Morrisburg were rinks skipped by Kaeghan Lowson and Calvin Scott. Curling for Lowson were Kendrew Byers, Ewan Wilson and Nolan Belanger. For Scott the curlers were Emily Poirier, Wyatt Jones and Jonathan Charette.

The B championship was won by Russell’s Allyson Harvey, William Manion, Sophie Denko and Martha Lewis. They defeated Winchester’s Kelsey Angel in the final.
