Advance polls open today

With spring well underway and summer just around the corner, it is finally time for farmers’ markets.

According to South Dundas clerk, Brenda Brunt, there is a by-law permitting two markets in the township: “one in Morrisburg across from the Pinkus Plaza and one in Iroquois by the Information Booth.”

She reported that “we sell six permits for each site. We have filled Iroquois but a couple of spots are left in Morrisburg.”

Brunt explained that the booths are filled when permit-holders have something to sell and, due to its unpredictable nature, the township does not advertise the farmers’ markets.

Predictability aside, according to Farmers’ Markets Ontario’s website, “shoppers love them because they can buy top-quality farm-fresh products directly from the person who produced them – and can often find products they won’t find anywhere else.”

“Communities love them because they bring people together and can turn once-deserted areas into hives of activity, attracting extra business for stores and restaurants nearby.”

Spring has definitely arrived because the Seaway Valley Singers are holding their spring concert at the Williamsburg Christian Reformed Church on Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. Their programme of beautiful and exciting music will help set the mood for sunny days and blue skies. 

Margaret Whisselle, an accomplished soprano and pianist, will accompany the 44 voice choir, which is under the  talented direction of conductor Robert Jones.  The Singers will be presenting a concert entitled The Best of Broadway & More. Wendy Gibb will act as the MC for the evening.

The Seaway Valley Singers present two concerts annually, one just before Christmas, and one in the early spring. Months of preparation and practice go into their shows, which are led by noted conductor, arranger and musician, Robert Jones. Over the years, the Singers have presented selections from all genres, folk to sacred, jazz and gospel to the great songs of Broadway.

A concert by the Seaway Valley Singers is a “must” on the calendars of audiences in the community.

The selections for The Best of Broadway & More are wide-ranging. From a medley taken from the great Rogers and Hammerstein’s The King and I, to the drama of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and Evita, there will be much to look forward to on May 1.

And for those who loved the Vicar of Dibley, the choir is performing Howard Goodall’s arrangement of The Lord’s Prayer with sensational young singer, Benjamin Vreman soloing. Look for additional pieces during the evening which will showcase the talents of this outstanding community choir.

Advance tickets are $10, available at PharmaChoice in Morrisburg, Chesterville and Winchester. Tickets at the door are $12.

Iroquois holds its Remembrance Day ceremony

It was cold, almost bitter, and the skies were grey in Iroquois on Sunday, November 4, as Iroquois held its Remembrance Day ceremony.

That did not stop people, all ages, from coming out to honour and remember the young men who laid down their lives for Canada in the great World Wars. Also remembered at the ceremony were the veterans of Korea, of many Canadian peace keeping missions and of Afghanistan.

The Iroquois Fire Department joined the Legion Colour Party and members of Branch #370 in the parade to the cenotaph, as did the scouts and many others.

During the services at the Legion and at the monument, the pipes and drums of the Kemptville Legion Branch #212 Pipe Band, directed by Pipe Major Mike Durant, played hymns and airs that would have been very familiar to the soldiers who served Canada’s colours. Everyone sang “O Canada” before the memorial.

Wreaths were presented on behalf of local organizations, businesses, churches, families and individuals. The young people of the community were also part of the service. MP Guy Lauzon laid a wreath on behalf of the federal government while MPP Jim McDonell placed one for the government of Ontario. Councillor Evonne Delegarde represented the Township of South Dundas. Two minutes of silence was observed.

Legion chaplain the Reverend Janet Evans led those present in prayer, finishing with the words, “We give You thanks for all who served their nation in time of trial, and for those who made the supreme sacrifice.”
