It is just what the “volleyball” doctor ordered for girls in grades 9-12 interested in taking up volleyball or who are looking to improve their skills.

Meant to complement the successful volleyball programs at Seaway District High School, an Ontario Volleyball “Spikes” eight-week program will start Thursday, November 8. It is open to girls in grades 9-12 in South Dundas and the surrounding area, but will be limited to the first 32 girls who register.

“It is meant to provide fitness, skills and scrimmages as well as a couple of exhibition matches to interested participants,” says organizer Andy Lee. “No previous experience is necessary.”

The Spikes program, developed by the Ontario Volleyball Association, is meant to develop and interest players in the game. The drills and games are designed so that everyone has lots of fun and learns volleyball skills like never before.

All participants receive a Spikes® t-shirt.

“I would hope that this girls program could be extended into a boys program next year, and also involve younger ages, if someone would want to lead them,” says Lee. “We are relying on the knowledge of local persons to assist in the program as well as the Spikes program direction.”

The Spikes program will run on designated Thursday nights from 7-8:30 p.m. for eight weeks from November 8 to January 10 at Seaway District High School. The cost is $50 per player.

CORNWALL & DISTRICT–Plans for local 55 plus winter games are under way, as the district prepares to send a team to the Ontario 55 plus Winter Games in Huntsville, February 26-28.

The local games will kick off with prediction skating, scheduled for Monday, November 12 and Friday, November 16 at the Benson Centre in Cornwall. Convener is Robert Peladeau (613-931-1641).

Glengarry Curling Club in Maxville will host a qualifying mixed bonspiel. The Stuart McKay rink from that club is the Ontario 55 plus Winter Games champions from 2011 in Haliburton. 

Dates are being finalized and information will be sent soon to local curling clubs.

Other qualifying events which will take place in the next couple of months are duplicate bridge and hockey, which has two age divisions (55 – 64 and 65+).

Alpine skiing and nordic skiing held their qualifying events in February 2012.  District 8’s Nordic Ski team won the Ontario team award in 2011 so will be defending that title in Huntsville.

After the Eastern Ontario Junior B Hockey League’s Fall Classic played in Arnprior on the weekend, the St. Lawrence Division numbers that saw the biggest increases, were those in the games played and games lost columns.

While the Morrisburg Lions lost both of their matches, 6-2 Friday night to the Renfrew Timberwolves and 6-1 to the Almonte Thunder on Saturday night, they weren’t alone in the St. Lawrence Division.

The only St. Lawrence Division team to claim a win in the annual fall classic was the Winchester Hawks and that came in overtime, 3-2 against Gatineau.

Coming close, but losing in overtime, were the Casselman Vikings to Metcalfe 3-2 and Akwesasne to Shawville 4-3.

In the 12 games played, involving the six St. Lawrence Division teams, the local league gave up nine losses to the Metro and Valley Division teams.

For the Lions, it was another tough weekend as they managed only three goals in the two games and gave up 12. In their last four outings, the Lions have counted just four goals and have given up 22.

Mikael Dion, in net for the Lions, Friday night against the Renfrew Timberwolves, gave up the six goals on 43 Timberwolves shots. At the other end of the ice Matt Gagne faced 36 Lions shots and stopped 34.

The Timberwolves hit early in the game going up 4-0 in the first period, two of the goals coming on their power play.

Curtis Pilon put the Lions on the scoreboard with a power-play goal early in the second period with help from Chris Rutley and Sylvester Bzdyl.

That fueled the Timberwolves for another two goals and a 6-1 advantage. 

Sylvester  Bzdyl got one more for the Lions late in the second period but that was it.

A scoreless third period, gave the Timberwolves the 6-2 win.

Saturday, Ryan Cooper was in net for the Lions who were out shot 37-24 by the Almonte Thunder.

The Thunder went up 1-0 in the first period and stretched it to 5-0 in the second.

They added one more in the third, before the Lions were able to spoil Dominic Plaschy’s shutout with a Brandon Chaffe goal late in the game.

After the weekend action, the Char-Lan Rebels continue to lead the St. Lawrence Division with 14 points. Casselman is in second place with 10 and the Winchester Hawks have closed the gap to now trail the Vikings by just one point. The Akwesasne Wolves are next with seven points and the Morrisburg Lions and Alexandria Glens are sharing the bottom spot, each with six points.

The Lions are at the Brockville Memorial Centre tonight (Wednesday, October 17) against the Brockville Tikis. 

They have two home games this weekend starting Friday night when the Athens Aeros come to town for an 8:30 p.m. match.

Then on Sunday, October 21, they host the Winchester Hawks at 2:30 p.m.

The Brockville Tikis are in fourth place in the Rideau Division with four wins and two overtime losses for 10 points, while the Athens Aeros hold second place, behind Gananoque, with six wins and one tie in 10 starts

The South Dundas “Howitzer” Atom B Rep Lions grabbed three points out of a possible four last week with a 3-3 tie against the Char-lan Rebels and a 3-1 win over the Alexandria Glens.

Sunday morning the Lions travelled to Alexandria to take on the first place Glens who were sitting atop the East division standings. With the Lions opening the season last week with a loss, they were looking to get into the win column and Jaeden Phifer-Shaver made sure of that.

With Brody Fairbairn out of the line-up and Ben Lapier at centre with Duncan Hutt and Phifer-Shaver they struck only 18 seconds into the game. With the opening face-off scrambled and the puck inside the Lions blue line Emytt Fetterly passed the puck up the boards to Phifer-Shaver who made a move on a Glens forechecker. He then broke into the Glens end, faked a pass and shot a low wrister that hit the defensman’s stick for the 1-0 lead.

The Lions continued to press, and Phifer-Shaver struck again on his next shift when centreman Jack Connors moved the puck ahead to Duncan Hutt who in turn fed Phifer-Shaver for the Lions 2-0 lead. The Glens responded on a scramble in front of  Lions goaltender Brendan Shaver when a Glen’s forward picked up a loose puck that wasn’t cleared.

In the second period, the Lions continued to pressure as Nolan Henry and Jack Connors would go post to post on a play that had the Glens goaltender deked badly out of position. 

Nathan Verhey and Kieran Geurkink had a strong game on defence as they continued to push would be attackers off the puck.

They also moved the puck quickly up to the Lions forwards to start their breakout. 

Dana Domanko made several strong defensive plays on Glens forward Mathieu Laugne as he had several breaks.

 In the second period, the Lions extended their lead to 3-1 as Duncan Hutt dug out a loose puck off the left wing boards and centered to Ben Lapier who tipped the puck to Phifer-Shaver who registered his third goal of the game. 

 With the lead at 3-1, the Lions turned to defence and goaltender Brendan Shaver made several key saves down the stretch to seal the victory and improve the Lions record to 1-1-1 on the season.

 On Thursday night, the Lions hosted the Char-lan Rebels. With both teams looking for their first points of the season, the Lions needed a strong third to try and gain that point. 

With under four minutes left on the clock, Joshua Broad picked up a loose puck in the offensive zone and attempted to centre to Ben Lapier standing in the slot. Broad miscued and the defender shot the puck around the back of the net where he chased it down reversed momentum and backhanded a pass out front to Lapier who buried a backhand shot on the ice, into the net for the game tying goal.

 The Lions and Rebels exchanged chances in the last few minutes but the score remained 3-3.

 The Lions fell behind early in the contest 2-0, but they bounced back on a goal by Nolan Henry. 

The line of Brody Fairbairn, Jaeden Rowe and Duncan Hutt continued their strong offensive push but came away empty handed. 

 In the second, Ben Lapier cut the lead back to one again when he chased down a Rebel defenseman, took the puck away from him and shot for his first goal of the game to make the score 3-2. 

The South Dundas “Howitzer” Atom B Rep Lions will face the Cornwall Colts here, Saturday night, at 7 p.m. immediately following public skating.

The South Dundas Novice B Lions dropped their home opener 6-4 against the visiting South Grenville Rangers.  

The Rangers proved to be too much for the Lions again as they also lost to them in exhibition play.  

Holden Hildebrant found the back of the net four times for the Rangers, and Justin Van Luit and Keaton Urquhart each added one in the winning effort.  

Sean Nicolaassen had another offensive outburst for the Lions scoring all four goals for the home team. 

 On his first goal, Dryden Buter dug the puck out of the corner and passed to Spencer Barclay who made a nice touch pass across to Nicolaassen who one timed it into the back of the net.  

On his second goal, Nicolaassen took the draw at centre straight ahead, split the defence, made a quick head fake on the goalie and slid it home. 

 He completed his hat trick on a nice play from Owen Paterson who chipped the puck into the corner. That allowed Nicolaassen to pick it up and get a shot off, from a bad angle, that beat the Rangers goalie on the short side.  

Goal number four came on a backhander from the top of the slot that trickled its way through the goalie’s legs.  

Paterson contributed the assist on the play battling for the puck and getting it across to Nicolaassen.  

Defenceman Nathan Paulino took the Big Stick honours for the game with a couple of nice rushes, strong defensive play and some nice passes to move the puck up the ice.  

The Lions are back at it Sunday at 1 p.m. in Morrisburg.

Three games in just over a week and the Dundas Bantam House girls put up a one win-two loss record.

Dundas opened their week’s action on the road where they gave up a 6-1 loss to Carleton Place on Saturday, October 6.

Then on Saturday, October 13, they were on the road to Smiths Falls where they righted themselves with a big 7-0 victory.

For game three, on Sunday, October 14, Dundas recorded their second loss, when they hosted Clarence Rockland and came out on the wrong side of a 3-0 count.

Kalleigh Young, with help from Cassandra Young and Brynn Gilmour, counted the lone goal against Carleton Place late in the first period.

The Dundas lead held until well into the second frame when Carleton Place turned it up a notch for three unanswered counters. They added another three in the third for the 6-1 victory.

Then in Smith Falls on Saturday, it was a totally different story.

Taylor Casselman pointed the girls towards the 7-0 victory with the loan goal of the first period.

In the second period, Dundas went up 4-0. Brynn Gilmour kicked it off with help from Emma Barkley and Anna Gruich.

Barkley and Gruich then put it together to assist Emily Byers for goal number three. Barkley finished off the period scoring with help from Byers and Gilmour.

Early in the third period, Ally Weegar pushed it to 5-0 with help from Cassandra Young and Kalleigh Young.

The line struck again with 3:53 left on the clock this time with Kalleigh Young scoring and Cassandra Young and Weegar providing the help.

Weegar gave Dundas the 7-0 win with an unassisted counter in the last minute of the game.

Dundas was unable to get much of anything going against Clarence Rockland on Sunday, as the latter counted three unanswered first period goals for the 3-0 win.

The 30 members of the St. Lawrence Rowing Club (SLRC), that rows out of the Galop Canal in Iroquois, has put away their paddles for the season which was highlighted, Saturday 29, with personal best performances at the Head of the Trent Regatta in Peterborough.

At Peterborough, the local club entered two boats in the 4km regatta. 

The recreational 8 finished in second place out of 13 boats with a time of 13:22 and the recreational 4 finished fourth out of 10 boats with a time of 15:42.

One of the newest members of the St. Lawrence Rowing Club, Olivia Wouters, competed in a novice women’s boat for the University of McMaster.

Wouters completed the SLRC’s Learn to Row program that ran for four weeks in May and June, before rowing recreationally with the St. Lawrence Club for the rest of the summer.

The St. Lawrence Rowing Club is  looking back on a season that included participation in three regattas including one at Burnstown and the Head of the Rideau, along with the recent regatta in Peterborough.

The club also benefitted from a Trillium Grant which is being used to purchase a new boat. The new stern-coxed four will be a lighter boat than the ones currently in the club and will be in the club’s possession for the 2013 season.

The Dundas County Midget B Lions hung up their skates on a big weekend here Sunday, when they gave up a tough 2-1 loss to the Nepean Wildcats in the championship final of the 29th annual Cornwall Competitive Tournament.

The Lions had a great tournament record going undefeated in preliminary round action with a 2-2 tie against the Wildcats, a hard-fought 1-0 win against Smith Falls and a 5-2 victory over Rockland.

Their record put them into the tournament semi-final against Kitchener and once again they were successful, handing the Rangers a 5-2 loss to earn the right to advance to the championship against Nepean.

With the two holding out for the 2-2 tie in preliminary round action, the championship game was expected to be close and exciting and they didn’t disappoint.

Hope Klein-Swormink put the Lions on the scoreboard  in the first period with an unassisted goal at 3:04.

At  9:51 Nepean’s Neila Brenning answered to tie the game 1-1.

The game remained even throughout the second period and at 2:27 of the third Brenning counted her second to give Nepean a 2-1 edge.

The Lions were unable to count anything more and the Wildcats hung on for the 2-1 win and the tournament championship.

For her goal, Klein-Swormink was named the Lions game MVP.

The Lions opened in the tournament on Friday night, October 12, with the 2-2 tie against the Wildcats.

After a scoreless first period Nepean went up 2-0 in the second to force the Lions to turn it up a notch.

Shannon Van Moorsel answered with an unassisted counter at 9:51 of the second to tighten the gap to 2-1 heading into the third.

Midway into the third, Jenna Warren and Taylor Cummins set it up for a Vicki Van Hoof goal which tied the game at two.

For her efforts in the Lions net, Megan Van Allen was named the Dundas County game MVP.

The Lions kicked off Saturday’s action with a 1-0 squeaker against the Smiths Falls Cubs with Van Allen in net for the shutout.

It wasn’t until the third period that Van Moorsel, with help from Casey McNairn, was able to light the scoreboard in the Lions favour, and that was it.

The Lions claimed their second win of the tournament against Clarence Rockland 5-2 on Saturday.

Again Van Moorsel kicked it off with an unassisted first period goal.

Clarence Rockland came charging back in the second period with a pair of Melissa Bergeron counters to go ahead 2-1, but they couldn’t hold on.

With help from Christyn Veinotte and Paige Morris, Casey McNairn tied the game 2-2 and 46 second later, Vicki Van Hoof, scored unassisted to push the Lions ahead 3-2.

At 8:50 of the second, Veinotte counted to give the Lions a 4-2 advantage heading into the third.

Van Hoof made it 5-2 in the third period with help from Brittaney Dean.

Semi-final action on Sunday, October 14 saw no scoring in the first period.

In the second, the Lions went up 3-0 against the Kitchener Rangers on goals by Veinotte (from Morris), Taylor Cummins (from Klein-Swormink and Van Hoof) and Morris (from Van Moorsel and Jenna Warren.).

The Rangers fought back in the third to make a game of it with a pair of early goals to cut the Lions lead to 3-2.

But that was it.

Veinotte counted her second of the game, unassisted, and Madison McLeod made it 5-2 with help from Veinotte and Geena Rose.

The Dundas County Midget B girls competitive team plays in the Ottawa District Women’s Hockey Association against teams from Kanata, Nepean, Smiths Falls, Ottawa, Carleton Place, Russell and Rockland.

They lost their first regular season game on September 25 to the Ottawa Ice 1-0 in Winchester.

In game two, in Smiths Falls, they were held to a scoreless tie by the Cubs.

They picked up their first win of the season in game three against the Russell Coyotes 3-0 in Morrisburg.

Shannon Van Moorsel scored in the second period and Vicki Van Hoof and Christyn Veinotte counted goals two and three early in the third period.

Megan Van Allen was in net for the shutout.

Back-to-back losses and very quickly the Morrisburg Junior B Lions find themselves in the bottom mix of the St. Lawrence Division hockey pack.

With three wins to date, the Lions are now in the division basement, tied at six points, with the Akwesasne Wolves and the Alexandria Glens.

Friday night on home ice they lost to the Akwesasne Wolves, and Saturday night, they were handed a 5-1 road loss by the Char-Lan Rebels.

 For the first place Rebels, it marked their second win of the week. Thursday night, they defeated Casselman in their home barn, 4-3, to put themselves five points ahead of the second place Vikings.

The Winchester Hawks climbed out of the division basement and landed in third place thanks to a 4-1 win against Akwesasne. They opened their weekend action in Winchester, Friday night with a 7-5 loss to the Alexandria Glens. 

Friday night in Morrisburg, the Lions were unable to get on the scoreboard. They were, however, able to find the penalty box, opening the door to four consecutive Wolves power-play goals.

Jayden Lemire gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the first period. That was followed by another three power-play goals in the second period from the sticks of Hiio Herne, Jack Nardiello, and Dillon Barr.

Barr finished if off for the 5-0 Wolves win with his second goal in the final minute of the second period.

The Wolves were assessed 26 minutes in penalties, which included eight minors and a checking from behind misconduct.

The Lions were assessed 46 minutes in penalties which included 13 minors,  and a pair of misconducts for checking from behind and checking to the head.

Mikael Dion, who was in net for the Lions, gave up the five goals on 44 Wolves shots. Cam Turcotte in the Wolves net, had a light time of it, but stopped all 16 of the Lions shots.

In Williamstown on Saturday night, the Lions Sylvester Bzdyl, with help from Chris Rutley and Clarke Veenstra, put the Lions on the scoreboard with a power-play goal at 5:36 of the first period.

But that was it.

The first place Rebels, pulled ahead 2-1 in the first period and never looked back as they added two more in the second and polished off the 5-1 victory with a Blain MacKay goal at 8:08 of the third period.

Counting the other Rebels goals were Dean Derouchie, Kevin Veilleux, Lawson MacDougall and Tyler Filion.

The Lions were assessed 65 minutes in penalties which included 10 minors, a five minute fighting major to goaltender Ryan Cooper, three misconducts, and a game misconduct.

The Rebels were assessed 37 minutes in penalties which included 11 minors, a fighting major to Quinlin MacDonell and a game misconduct. 

Cooper who was in net for just over 55 minutes gave up five goals in 37 Rebels shots. Rebels goaltender Alex Boileau stopped 32 Lions shots.

Coming up this weekend is the annual Fall Classic Event at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior. The weekend of Junior Hockey begins Friday night, runs throughout much of the day on Saturday and again on Sunday.

The Lions are scheduled to play the Valley Division’s Renfrew Timberwolves at 9 p.m. Friday night, October 12. Also on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. on  rink A ice, the Winchester Hawks will play the Metro Division’s Ottawa West Golden Knights.

Game two for the Lions is set for Saturday night, October 13 at 8:30 p.m. against the Valley Division’s Almonte Thunder.

Four games will be played Friday night, 10 Saturday and another eight on Sunday.

The Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey league is once again very proud to have the Ottawa Senators as its presenting sponsor. The Senators have generously provided 88 home game tickets for the MVPs on both team in each of the 22 games as well as Senators’ ball caps.

In addition the Senators have provided four autographed Sens jersey which will be used for a silent auction to support the league which is one of the largest Junior B leagues across Canada.

Last Tuesday October 2, the Novice B Lions traveled to Kemptville to kick off the regular season with a 3-3 tie against the Panthers.

The home team caught the Lions on their heels early, but Lions goalie Brayden Lalonde-Thompson came up big with several key saves to keep the opponents off the board.  Rallied by Brayden’s strong play, the Lions woke up and began to skate with the Panthers.

The play was back and forth with equal chances at each end until 5:31 left in the first period when the Panthers struck for a l-0 lead. 

The Lions answered three minutes later when Montgomery Dejong pinched at the opponents blue line keeping the puck in the zone and the play alive with a strong battle along the boards. 

Spencer Barclay picked up the loose puck, and  passed to his winger Dryden Buter who fired a quick shot on net. 

The Kemptville goalie made the save but was unable to control the rebound allowing left winger Quade Mullin to bury it to tie for the Lions first goal. 

Thirty seconds later on the next shift, Sean Nicolaassen jumped on a Panther turnover in the neutral zone, broke in on net, deked the goalie and backhanded it into the open side making it 2-1. 

The Panthers answered late in the first period to tie it 2-2 and then took a 3-2 lead midway through the second period. 

With three minutes left in the second, strong back checking from Sam Connors pressured the Panthers forward to cough up the puck. 

Nicolaassen grabbed it and passed up to Owen Paterson who took it the rest of the way and found the back of the net to knot the game at 3-3. 

Strong defensive play from defencemen Cameron Shaver, Nathan Paulino, Montgomery Dejong, Jackson McCann and Stefan Kronstal limited the Panthers chances in the third period.  Lalonde-Thompson took care of any chances that did come with save after save. 

With the Panthers pressing late in the game, the Lions were called on a tripping penalty, gave the home team a power play with only 10 seconds to go. 

The Lions, however, were equal to the task, getting the puck into the corner off the draw and keeping it from the net until time ran out. 

Lions goalie Brayden Lalonde-Thompson won the “Big Stick” as player of the game. 

In exhibition play, Saturday, Nicolaassen led the way against Char-Lan with three goals and an assist as the Lions collected a 4-3 victory. Patterson added a goal and assist and Dejong had two assists. 

Dryden Buter played a strong game in net filling in for the Lions absent regular goalie.  Patterson started the scoring in the first period on a nice passing play from Nicolaassen and Dejong. 

Char-Lan scored in the second to tie it 1-1. 

In the third period, Dejong picked up the puck and made a cross ice pass to Patterson who chipped the puck past the defense to send Nicolaassen on a breakaway mission to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. 

The Rebels answered before Nicolaassen added two more to complete his hat trick and stake the Lions to a 4-2 lead. 

A goal late in the game brought Char-Lan to within one, but the Lions were able to hold them off for the 4-3 victory. Nicolaassen took the “Big Stick” honours for the game. 

The Novice B Lions next home game is Sunday, October 14th.
