The Seaway Kickers girls U18 soccer team scored a big 4-1 victory Monday night (June 4) when they travelled to D.A. Moodie Park, to take on Nepean City. 

After a slow start the girls really started to move the ball and stretch the field.  

Mid-fielder, Kaitlyn Merkley made a nice pass to Kelsey Douglas who crossed the ball to Lesley-Ann Tupper for the Kickers’ first goal of the season.  

Tupper struck again with a nice feed from Kaitlyn Geurkink after a great clearing pass from Emile Vanveen.  

Nepean rallied and pushed back hard but the defence of Abby Fawcett, Tracey Blokland, Leah Wells, Jennifer Smith, Vanveen and Megan Hines, along with Keeper Jade Millward, held strong. 

The second half saw the Kickers come out really strong.

Michaela Morrow fed a nice pass to Ashley Smith who, after beating a couple of Nepean defenders, crossed the ball to Sara Gudlaugsson for an easy goal.   

Jessica Hartle started a nice play up the sidelines which finished with the final goal by Alyssa MacMillan.  

Kailyn Douglas was in the net for the second half and did a great job. Nepean’s only goal came from a penalty kick. 

The Kickers made their season debut on Monday, May 28, in Nepean, where they were handed a 1-0 loss by the Hotspurs despite out-shooting the Hotspurs 15 – 7.  

The Kickers came out hard and fast and dominated the game with Kelsey Douglas hitting a couple of crossbars on nice feeds from Tupper and Kaitlyn Geurkink.  

Ashley Smith was a force down the middle and had a nice try on a cross by Alyssa MacMillan but just couldn’t finish.  

The defence kept the Hotspurs away from Keepers Jade Millward and Jessica Hartle with some timely defensive coverage and great plays.  

The Kickers next game is June 11th, 6:30 p.m. at Seaway High School in Iroquois.

A pair of shutouts marked the start of the 2012 season for the Seaway Kickers in recent Southside Soccer League play.

Casper Furo led the U13 Kickers to a 4-0 win over the visiting Nepean Hotspurs in Iroquois, Thursday night with two goals. He was backed by John Coligan and Curt Cutler who added a goal a piece. Goalkeeper Shawn Dowson recorded the shutout. 

While the U13 Kickers were working on their shutout in Iroquois, the U18 Mixed Kickers were in Ottawa where they too were working on a shutout against a Nepean Hotspurs team. 

Dan Davidson scored a hat trick to lead the Mixed Kickers to a 5-0 shutout and Liam Bush and Jeff McLaughlin backed him with one goal each. 

John Gilmer recorded the shutout for the Mixed Kickers. 

The 15 Girls Seaway Kickers hosted Nepean City in Iroquois, Wednesday. After two quick goals by Nepean, the Kickers Kennedy Douma and Sophia Currier answered in the second half, to tie the game 2-2.

The U13 Girls Kickers beat the Ottawa Internationals 2-1 in Ottawa on Tuesday night.

Two local golfers, Kurtis Barkley of Williamsburg and Prescott’s Bill Minkhorst, were just one stroke off the pace set by Ottawa playing professional Jeremiah Shields at the first of six “Chase the Dream”  qualifying events played on the rain-soaked Upper Canada Golf Course, Sunday.

A heavy rain fell throughout the first nine holes of this competition hosted by Evolution Golf and Event Management. 

Although the rain did stop on the back nine, the already-long Upper Canada Golf Course layout (it plays 3,375 yards from the pro tees) was soaked and made for challenging conditions.

Jeremiah Shields, a playing professional from Ottawa became the first-ever Medallist for the “Chase the Dream” series when he posted a steady two over par, 74. 

Next up were Minkhorst and Barkley who tied with 75s.

Minkhorst, a club professional from the Prescott Golf Club, carded his 75, despite an eight on Upper Canada’s signature hole, the 630 yard, par five 14th hole. 

Amateur Kurtis Barkley, a longtime member of the Cedar Glen Golf Club east of Williamsburg who is also playing out of Upper Canada this year, also carded a 75 and Andy Rajhathy, a golf professional from Ottawa was the fourth and final qualifier at 79.

All four golfers now move on to the final “Chase the Dream” qualifier that will be played at Smuggler’s Glen on Sunday, August 26th. There they will join an elite field of 28 golfers who will play for three exemptions into The Great Waterway Classic.

“We had a great start to our “Chase the Dream” series on a very challenging day weather-wise at Upper Canada,” said David Dargie, tournament director of The Great Waterway Classic. “Despite the rainy weather, the course was in great condition and our players were able to finish their rounds. Three golfers finished only two shots out of qualifying for the August 26th event at Smuggler’s Glen showing the strong fight that they all put up yesterday in trying conditions.”

“Overall, it was what we wanted when we set up these ‘grass roots’ qualifying events – a group of golfers trying their level best to make it to the next level and hopefully get a chance to play with the Canadian Tour Pros.”

The next “Chase the Dream” event will be held at eQuinelle Golf Club in North Grenville on July 8th. 

Registrations are still open for anyone who wants to “Chase the Dream” and try to qualify for The Great Waterway Classic, the Canadian Tour event which is coming to Smuggler’s Glen,  this September 3-9 and to the Upper Canada Golf Course in 2013.

IROQUOIS–It has been a bit of a slow start to the 2012 season for Luke Whitteker and the Whitteker Motorsports team.  They have been hard at work in their Iroquois, Ontario shop, and are fighting to find some consistency and gain some momentum as the season heats up.  This past weekend, the team had events planned at Mohawk International Raceway, Brockville Speedway and Cornwall Speedway, but Mother Nature would play a pivotal role in the schedule.

The first stop on the schedule was Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York.  Despite a forecast of rain, the area stayed relatively dry until late afternoon when track officials were forced to cancel the evening’s events.

Rain was again in the forecast for Saturday, and while it did rain in the area most of the morning, the Speedway avoided the worst of it, and their racing program was on as scheduled. 

In his qualifying heat race, Luke started from third place, but struggled early, and finished the race in fourth.  

After making some adjustments to the car, Whitteker lined up for the 30 lap main event from inside of row three in fifth place.  

In the early stages of the race, Whitteker had moved up to third, but settled into fourth place after a series of cautions and a red flag for a major crash in turn three and four.  

At the checkered flag, Whitteker crossed the finish line with a fifth place finish.

Just before noon on Sunday, the wet weather again prevailed  and the Cornwall Speedway made their decision to cancel their racing program.

This coming weekend, Whitteker will be back at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night, Brockville Speedway on Saturday and Cornwall Speedway on Sunday night.  

Early in the season, Whitteker sits eighth in points at Mohawk, 12th at Brockville Speedway and at Cornwall, after just one regular event, he is 12th in points.

Week two of the Men’s Roller Hockey League is completed and taking the early lead is the New Blue entry.

The New Blue collected their second consecutive victory Thursday night, 12-5 over the Red Rockets, while White Lightning picked up win number one, in a 12-7 encounter with the Morewood Monkeys.

Justin Elliott was the man to stop in the New Blue’s 12-7 win over the Red Rockets, but the Rockets failed to do so.

Elliott struck for six of the New Blue goals and added a pair of assists against Rockets’ goaltender Chris Sloan.

Tommy Keyes backed Elliott with a pair and singles were scored by Jamie McIntosh, Randy Markell, Connor Hodgson and Colton Robinson.

Answering for the Rockets were Chris Phifer and Dean Moore with two goals apiece and Chad McMillan  with a single.

Will McIntire was in net for the New Blue win.

Brandon Buma led the Lightning to their 12-7 win against the Monkeys with six goals, including the last four of the game.

The game remained close, 4-3 for Lightning after one, and 6-4 after two, but in the third they turned it up a notch with Buma’s performance to coast to the win.

Dave Summers backed Buma with three goals and singles were scored by Billy Henderson, Steve Mattice and Kyle Sob-   ering.

Chris Embury answered three times for the Monkeys, while Cody Carruthers added a pair and Mike Thompson and Ryan Hay scored singles.

Barret Brundige was in the Lightning net for the win and Kyle Shane gave up the Monkeys loss.

The New Blue leads the league with four points, while Lightning and the Red Rockets are tied with two points each. The Monkeys are still looking for their first win.

Not once, not twice, but seven times. That’s the number of holes-in-one, that Morrisburg golfer, Brian McNairn has achieved.

His latest was the par three fifth hole at the Morrisburg Golf Course on Saturday, May 19.

The hole was playing to 145 yards, and McNairn was golfing with buddies Mike Laurin, Lee Beaupre and Dave Myers.

He used a seven iron.

We knew it was going in from the time it landed said Laurin. “It hit on the front of the green, ran straight up the hill and dropped into the cup.”

Although McNairn has been playing golf for some 40 plus years, it wasn’t until 2000 that he recorded his first ace.

That was at the Upper Canada Golf Course on the tough par three 13th. It was full steam ahead after that.

He has now aced the par three fifth and 14th holes on the Morrisburg course twice and the par three second and eighth holes once each.

An A flight player, McNairn says it is “fun to see a shot go in like that. If only the game was that easy all of the time.”

For fans who love good baseball and exciting games, there was no where better to be the weekend of May 25-27, 2012, than at the Williamsburg Ball Diamond taking in the Casey At Bat Memorial Fastpitch Tournament. 

Organized by Lyle Schell and the Schell family, this was the 9th tournament held at Williamsburg.The Tournament (named for Casey Schell) this year honoured the memory of Lyle’s mother, Joanie Schell. The home team, the Williamsburg Cigars, wore shirts which proclaimed on the back, Joanie’s Way: All or Nothing. 

The proceeds from the tournament, $1,000, are all going to Hospice Care.

The Cigars fielded 10 players. “I made the calls about two months ago,” Schell said, “and we basically all got together here on Friday night. Pretty great results for a team that didn’t actually practice,” he said of his team which made it to the championship final.

Eight teams entered this year. They included, in the Casey Division, the Barrhaven Blues, Quebec Midgets, Donnacona Bluesox,  and the Napanee Midget Express, and in the Sib division  the Cigars, the Cornwall Pickmeups, the Quebec Juniors and the Cree Nation Fireballs (who travelled for 17 hours from northern Quebec).

The Cigars’ Friday night opener turned out to be a nail biter. 

The team was down 6-3 against the Cornwall Pickmeups in the bottom of the 7th inning. When Jamie Smith came up to bat for the Cigars, the bases were loaded with two out. 

He hit a beautiful grand slam, and brought in four runs. The Cigars took their opener 7-6.

“Boy, was I excited,” Smith said. “It was just a great moment.”

“Never in our lives, in all the tournaments, have we seen a game end that way with a grand slam,” said team-mate and catcher Bobby Hart.

On Saturday afternoon, the Cigars dominated, handing the Cree Nation Fireballs a 7-0 loss. The outstanding pitching of Neil “Cookie” Cook was blisteringly effective, backed up by great fielding and hitting by the rest of the team.

Unfortunately the Cigars went down to defeat on Sunday morning against the Quebec Juniors, 8-4, which put them in second place in the Sib division and pitted them against Barrhaven, first in the Casey division, in the Sunday afternoon semi-final.

This was a hard fought game, with the teams remaining scoreless for several innings. There was consistently fine pitching by Cook. Then, at the top of the fourth inning, Hart belted a two base hit and brought Curtis Summers home putting the Cigars ahead 1-0. 

At the top of the seventh,  Cory Alkerton bunted, getting two runners on base. Dan Loney batted them home, and the Cigars took the game from the Barrhaven Blues, 3-0.

In the final and deciding game of the tournament, the Cigars were pitted against the Donnacona Bluesox, who had defeated the Quebec Juniors in their semi final game to advance to the finals.

Luck ran out in this game for the Cigars, and they were defeated by the Bluesox 6-1. They took home the 2012 Casey at Bat trophy.

Named the Tournament’s MVP was Mathieu Roy, Donnacona Bluesox. Steve Savard, also of the Bluesox, was named top hitter. Neil Cook of the Williamsburg Cigars was named top pitcher.

“It was a great turn out and great weather for Casey at Bat,” said Lyle Schell. “We received lots of compliments on the event, including the barbecue (run by the Morrisburg Pentecostal Church Women’s Ministry with proceeds going to the Food Bank) and the band, Reckless. And we met our fund raising goal. Thanks to all involved for making the Memorial Tournament another  great success.”

The Cedar Glen Golf Club activities officially got underway on Saturday, when members participated in the annual opening day tournament to pick up the first awards of the season.

Pat Reaney and Kurtis Barkley were the A low gross winners in their respective categories with Reaney shooting a 94 for the A flight ladies’ win and Barkley carding a 79 to lead the men’s field.

Gary Lafave posted an 83 for low gross in B flight to narrowly edge out Steve Plummer who was just tone stroke back at 84. 

Bunny Warner was the top shooter in the C/D combined flight with a 91.

Flight winners for the ladies were Tabatha Casselman with a 104 in B flight, and Muriel Whitteker with a 90 for the win in C flight.

For the net wins, Rob Casselman shot an 85 which gave him the low net 73 in A flight. 

Dave Levere got the nod for the win in B Flight using retrogression to settle a tie. Levere shot an 86 which gave him a 69 net.

Retrogression was also needed to decided the men’s net winner in C/D flight. Called to the prize table was Peter Elliot with a winning 75 net from his round of 107.

The lone net prize awarded in the ladies field went to Sandy Julien who shot a 116 for a 74 net win in C/D flight.

The husband and wife duo of Larry and Diane Gallinger got together at the golf club here Saturday to claim the local club’s first two-ball victory of the new season.

The Gallinger’s posted an 82 to win the annual Spring Fling Two-ball event beating out Lindsay and Carolyn Weegar who were two strokes back at 84.

Claiming the B flight win was the team of Lawrence and Joan Larocque who shot an 86. Finishing in second place in B flight, with an 89, were Mick and Yvonne Mabo.

The Callaway winners (for participants who do not have handicaps) the low gross was shot by Garry and Carolyn Beckstead who finished the 18 hole play with an 84. Second low in the Callaway division went to Brenda and Robbie Stitt with a 96.

The highlight of the day was the winning combination of Lillian Noon and Gareth Cochrane when they picked up first low net in B flight. 

Cochrane, aged 19, and Noon 91 proved that age is not a dividing factor as they teamed for a gross score of 96 for their 68.4 winning B flight net.

Low net in A flight went to Charlie and Kittie Moore who posted an 87 for a 69.4 winning net.

Low net in the Callaway field went to Jamie and Kasha Foley.

Second low net in A flight was won by Jerry Tsaferis and Berneice Whitteker (85 for a 72.5 net) and in B flight to Mike and Wendy Hoogeveen (93 for a 72.8 net. Danny and Sheila Youmelle won second low net in Callaway.

With just three exceptions, the executive of the South Dundas Minor Hockey Association remains unchanged with president Jeff van Moorsel returning for another term.

The annual general meeting of the association was held last Tuesday, April 24 with the various reports given for the year.

President Jeff van Moorsel said it was a great year for the association with two teams winning championships, the Novice B Lions and the Bantam Rep Lions. van Moorsel expressed his thanks to all the coaches and the executive for a job well done.

He mentioned too, that fees for the South Dundas Minor Hockey Association have been increased for next year by $50 at all levels, save Initiation, due largely to the increasing cost of ice, which is the association’s biggest expense.

Ice rental costs for the 2011-12 season were $83,035.24, up from $76,577.55 the season before.

With registrations totalling $79,245, the association counted heavily on fund raising which brought in $35,400 and donations which accounted for another $4,000.

After ice rental, the biggest expense was refereeing at a cost of $17,304. Insurance (coaches and players) cost $7,236 and another $6,375 was spent on equipment. 

Other costs were for instruction, league fees, trophies and banners and general and administrative expenses. 

With a total revenue of $120,169.13 and total expenses at $122,921.44, the association dipped into its reserves for the second consecutive season. Last year the association reported a small loss of $2,300.

Although experiencing back to back years with small losses, the association remains healthy, financially. In addition to the fee increase, plans are in the works to recruit more children into the Initiation program.

Referee in Chief, David Lapier reported the South Dundas referees had a great year, claiming the local association has the best referees in the league.

The association’s web master, Jason Broad, shared some of the stats regarding hits on the website.

Joining the executive of the South Dundas Minor Hockey Association for the 2012/13 season are Mike Domanko in the 1st vice-president position and Jamie Smith as 2nd vice president and Risk Management rep.

Also new to the executive is Tanya Domanko who will be Co-registrar with Cassandra Barry who has handled the position for a number of years.

Past-president Gary Hart returns as fund raising coordinator. 

Also returning are Secretary Andrea Cartier, Treasurer Pam Mullin, Rules and Discipline Chair and Referee-in-Chief David Lapier, Coaching/Development Coordinator Bruce Mullin, Equipment Manager Rob Perry, Ice Scheduler Steve Martineau, Referee Assignor Lisa Schwerdtfeger and Web Master Jason Broad.
