Kickers U18 girls on track with big win

 

U13M Kickers run up four wins

NEPEAN–The U13M Kickers stretched their season record to 5-0 with success in four consecutive road games last week.

On June 13, Seaway visited the Nepean City M1 team at the Centrepointe East field in Nepean. Nepean City where they produced a solid 6-1 win.

Nepean City scored first at the 10 minute mark with a shot high in the left corner which foiled Seaway’s goalie Shawn Dowson. 

Ten minutes later, the game was tied on a goal by Seaway forward Aaron Tibbin, assisted by David Vreman. 

Late in the first half, Seaway went up 3-1 on back-to-back goals from Conner Dumoulin, assisted by Kendrew Byers, and Oakley Beavers with Tibben on the assist. 

With two minutes left in the first half, Seaway midfielder Daniel Swerdfeger made if 4-1 on a penalty kick. 

Early in the second half, Dumoulin netted his second goal, with Byers on the assist. 

Seaway dominated the second half keeping Nepean City to two shots the whole half.

At the whistle, John Coligan landed a goal to end it ar 6-1 for Seaway. 

Byers collected three assists with the helper on the final goal.

With the Southside Soccer League expanding the 2013 season from 12 to 15 games, the Seaway Kickers U13M team played three away games on June 15 at Hillcrest High School and at École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité in Ottawa.

Game one was against the Ottawa Royals M2 team on the turf at Hillcrest High School.

Seaway won the game 6-0 with goalie Travis McInnis getting his first shutout of the season. 

Goals were scored by John Coligan(two), Brayden Blacquiere-Rizk, Shawn Dowson, Jake Cutler and David Swerdfeger.

Seaway faced the Ottawa Internationals M2 team on the artificial turf of Franco-Cité for game two. 

Seaway won 4-1, with goalie Shawn Dowson stopping 12 shots. 

Seaway goals were scored by John Coligan, Conner Dumolin, David Swerdfeger and Oakley Beavers.

Game three was also played on the artificial turf of Franco-Cité, with Seaway claiming a 4-1 win over the Nepean City M4 team. The hard-fought game saw many scoring attempts by Seaway and Nepean City, but Seaway’s goaltending duo of Shawn Dowson and Travis McInnis stopped 12 shots. 

Kickers Conner Dumoulin, Oakley Beavers, Dawson Markell and Travis McInnis netted four through Nepean City’s defence. 

The Seaway Kickers U13M team begin a five-game home stand in Iroquois at the Merkley Soccer Fields against the Ottawa Internationals M1 squad, June 20th, 6:30 p.m. game start.

U13 Girls play to 1-1 tie

The Seaway Kickers U13G team visited the Ottawa Internationals G2 team June 11 at the Ottawa TLC field in Vanier where they settled for a 1-1 tie.

Poor weather impacted the field but not the team, with Kristyn VanHoof scoring on Ottawa’s goal early in the first half.

Seaway maintained the 1-0 lead throughout the remaining first half and most of the second half. 

However with five minutes remaining, Ottawa tied the game  and that is how it ended.

Cameron Broad and Alyssa Grant shared goaltending duties. 

Seaway hosts the Ottawa Royals G2 team June 18 in Iroquois. Game time is 6:30 p.m. 

U15 Girls win at home

The Seaway Kickers U15 Girls team defeated the Ottawa Internationals G2 team 2-0 at home, June 12. 

The Seaway goals were netted by Shayna Van Beilen and Lauren Snyder. 

The U15 Girls team will visit the Ottawa Royals G2 team in Ottawa, on June 19.

U18 Girls land decisive win

A hat-trick performance from Lesley-Ann Tupper led the U18 Seaway Girls team to a 7-2 victory over the Nepean City G1 team in Iroquois last Monday, June 10. 

Nadine VanDodewaard and Kaitlyn Geurkink netted a goal each and Alyssa MacMillian scored twice in the victory. 

A rematch is scheduled for June 17, in Nepean.

As they head into the new year, the Morrisburg Junior B Lions will be playing hard for a win in their remaining 11 games.

To date the Lions have just six wins against 24 losses. Their last win was on Sunday, November 16 against the Char-Lan Rebels.

December was an extremely tough month as the Lions were unable to put a mark in the win column and chalked up eight consecutive losses.

The final three were 5-0 to the visiting Westport Rideaus on Sunday, December 23, 6-3 to the Glens in Alexandria on Friday, December 28, and 2-1 to the Akwesasne Wolves on Cornwall Island on Saturday, December 29.

On Sunday afternoon, December 23 in Morrisburg, the Lions held the Rideau Division’s third place Rideaus to a scoreless first period.

The second period was the Lions undoing as the Rideaus nabbed goaltender John Gilmer for four counters which would not be answered.

The Rideaus goals were scored by Peter McGahey, Ryan Ward, Connor Merkley, Collin Tye and Caleb Rice.

The Rideaus had just three minor penalties and a game misconduct, while the Lions sat out seven minors, a five minute fighting major, a misconduct and a game misconduct.

Spencer Emery was in net for the Rideaus win.

On Friday night, December 28  the Lions jumped onto the Alexandria scoreboard with a first period, power-play goal by Sylvester Bzdyl assisted by Steven Savage and Chris Rutley.

They held onto their lead against the St. Lawrence Division’s fifth place Glens until 6:38 of the second period when the Glens got it rolling for three in a row.

At 6:38 the Glens, Bradley Massia tied it and at 13:38 TJ Burns gave them the lead. With just 1:50 left on the clock, and the Lions on their power play, the Glens Ryan Dunbar took possession of the puck to score, with his team short-handed, for a 3-1 lead.

The Lions power play, did recover, however, and just four seconds later Grant Cooper scored unassisted to get one back and keep the Glens to a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

Just over six minutes into the third period, Steven Savage scored for the Lions unassisted to even the playing field at three.

But the Glens came charging back with two counters for a 5-3 edge which they maintained until the final minute of play when they popped their sixth goal into the empty Lions net.

Brett Ayers was in net for the Glens win, while John Gilmer handled the Lions loss.

With Lions veteran goaltender, Mikael Dion serving a match suspension, Joey Lamarch has been providing the backup on the Lions bench.

The Lions out shot the Glens 44-26 and scored two of their goals on their power play. The Glens were assessed just five minor penalties and the Lions only two.

The Lions played their last game of 2012, on the road where they lost a close one to the Akwesasne Wolves, 2-1.

The Lions were first on the scoreboard with a Sylvester Bzdyl counter in the last minute of the first period. Michael Paquette and Chris Rutley provided the assists.

In the second period, neither Wolves goaltender Corey Garrow, nor the Lions John Gilmer could be beat, and the Lions held on to their one goal lead until well into the third.

At 6:07 of the final frame, the Wolves Oakley Thomas evened it with help from Vance Thompson and Dominick Coyle.

At 15:01, Thomas helped himself to seconds for what turned out to be the winner.

Again the Lions out shot their opponents 41-33. They were unsuccessful in 10 power-play opportunities while the Wolves were unsuccessful during their eight power-plays.

The Wolves were assessed 12 minor penalties and two misconducts while the Lions also sat out 12 minors and one misconduct.

Coming up this Saturday, January 5 is the annual Rideau-St. Lawrence Conference Showcase at the Gananoque Recreation Centre.

The Lions and the Westport Rideaus will open the action at 9:30 a.m. At noon it is Alexandria versus the Athens Aeros and at 2:30 p.m. the Casselman Vikings will take on the Gananoque Islanders. The 5 p.m. game will see Akwesasne and Brockville on the ice, while the Char-Lan Rebels and South Grenville will tangle at 7:30 p.m.

This Sunday, January 6, the Winchester Hawks will play their final game in Morrisburg this season. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

The coolest place in town these days is the arena in Morrisburg. That’s right. The ice is in, and a new season of skating and hockey is just a little more than a week away.

South Dundas manger of Recreation and Facilities, Donnie Lewis reports the ice plant was turned on Monday, August 25th, “but it was a slow start. It was really hot and muggy, so everything took longer.”

The suction valve was opened Wednesday, August 27 (removes air from the lines) and the ice making process began Thursday morning at 9 a.m. 

This past Saturday, the ice was painted and floods, using hoses, were put down until about 7 p.m. Saturday night and again on Sunday.

The first floods with the Zamboni were done Tuesday morning, and the ice-hockey lines were to be put down today, Wednesday, September 3.

“We have about a half inch of ice now,” said Lewis at lunchtime on Tuesday. “We are looking for about an inch of ice, and I expect we should be there by early next week.”

The first use of the 2014-15 ice will be by the Morrisburg and District Figure Skate Club at 9 a.m. Saturday morning, September 13.

Minor hockey will get its season start at 11:30 a.m. on that same day, and the Junior B Lions will have their first practice on home ice on Tuesday night, the 16th.

The Lions launched their camp on Sunday, August 24 in Brockville. Their main camp took place this past weekend.

The Jr. B Lions have an exhibition game set for Friday, September 12, in Finch against the Akwesasne Wolves. Game time is 7 p.m.
