CARDINAL – The Canada Steamship Lines vessel, Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin, has run aground on the St. Lawrence River. The vessel, loaded with iron ore bound for Quebec City, ran aground Sunday evening just outside of the shipping channel west of Cardinal.

According to river watcher Michael Folsom, the area along Galop Island is known for numerous high spots with rocks. He says the water depth is just 20 feet where the ship presently sits.

Shipping traffic between Cape Vincent and Massena was halted until late Monday morning while an investigation into the grounding occurred. Traffic has resumed ships to-and-from the Iroquois locks allowed to pass.

No further details are available at this time.
