MORRISBURG – The Williamsburg Sr. Pioneers continued to move up the District 2 Senior Canadian standings with an 11-2 win over the Orleans Red Sox August 5th at the Legion ball diamonds in Morrisburg.
Williamsburg built a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, putting three runs across the plate. Kolby Latulippe’s RBI single with the bases loaded started off the runs.
The Pioneers added one run in the second inning and two runs in the third. Orleans got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Pioneers led the Red Sox 6-1 after three innings.
Williamsburg added three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth inning. Ben Lapier’s two RBI triple in the middle of the fourth sent Lucas Menard and Brendan Shaver home.
Orleans tried to counter back in the top of the fifth inning, sending one runner across the plate, but they were unable to get more done thanks to the efforts of the Williamsburg infielders, who picked off Orleans runners, committing only one error in the game.
Nolan Henry, Latulippe, and Ethan Cummings each had a pair of singles in the game, while the team averaged two stolen bases per inning for five innings.
The Pioneers bullpen of Lapier, Van Hoof, and Fetterly combined for 113 pitches, struck out nine batters, walked five batters, and allowed two runs in six innings.
In the team’s other game for the week, the Pioneers’ comeback attempt fell short against the Glebe Canadians July 31st, losing 8-6.
The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead but fell behind 5-1 after the second inning. Down 7-1 after four innings, the Pioneers rallied scoring one run in the fifth and four in the sixth inning.
Spencer Barclay and Latulippe each had doubles in the game, while Henry had a triple in the third inning. Lapier threw 92 pitches in the effort.
The Pioneers sit in fourth place in the league with three games remaining this season. They play the Red Sox again August 7th, and return home to Legion Park Morrisburg August 8th against the Glebe Canadians. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
