Youth Symphony Comes to Morrisburg

“We hope that we will fill the church, because this will be a very uncommon event in Morrisburg,” said Isabelle Delage of Tilted Steeple Productions, which has organized and co-ordinated a special November 27th concert in Morrisburg by the West Island Youth Symphony Orchestra.

“Their orchestral performance in St. James Church (will) be breath-taking.”

Members of the St. James Anglican Church congregation, including Jill Dumaresq and Bob Ruddock, with the blessing of parish priest Jon Martin, and the help of several other volunteers, are sponsoring this one-of-a-kind concert in South Dundas. The Tilted Steeple committee is paying for the bus to bring the over 50 young musicians from Pointe-Claire, Quebec, to Morrisburg,  but the WIYSO is donating its entire performance, including the conductor’s fee, to causes in this community.

All funds raised at the November 27th concert, scheduled for 3 p.m., at St. James Anglican Church, High Street, will be split between the Tilted Steeple Refugee Sponsorship project and the Dundas County Food Bank.

And joining the West Island Orchestra at the Morrisburg performance will be extraordinary local singer/musician Margaret Whisselle.

“Margaret has an amazing voice,” said Isabelle. “When I asked her if she would lend her talent to our cause, she accepted right away. She’s been in contact with conductor Stewart Grant to discuss song selection and orchestral arrangements. It’s just going to be amazing.”

The West Island Youth Symphony Orchestra has been in existence since 1985. It is made up of the Symphony Orchestra and the String Orchestra. Participants are aged 9 to 25, and, following auditions, work with professional musicians under renowned conductors. The WISYO has travelled world wide from France to Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic, as well as across Canada.

Isabelle knows this Orchestra well.

Both her daughters were members of the senior Orchestra and she herself served as president of the board of directors for a time.

“This orchestra is dear to my heart,” Isabelle said. “But don’t be misled by the term “youth” in the Orchestra’s name. This is a dedicated and highly-skilled group of young musicians: they play very well.”

The concert will have enormous appeal to all ages.

Christmas music (and arias from Handel’s Messiah, with Margaret as soloist) will be part of the Morrisburg program, but so will “popular” classical works that people recognize and love.

St. James is ideally suited to a concert of this nature. “No matter where people sit in the church they will get an excellent view of the musicians.” And the acoustics are outstanding.

Tickets for the West Island Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stewart Grant, with special guest soloist Margaret Whisselle, in concert on Sunday, November 27,  3 p.m., at St. James Anglican Church, are $20 in advance, $25 at the door ($15 and $20 for students).

They are available at Seaway Valley PharmaChoice or by calling 613-543-3863 or 613-643-2090.
