Motion to rescind school closure plan will be tabled tonight

Stormont Dundas South Glengarry Federal riding association President Del Jones today announced that National Liberal leadership candidate M.P. Justin Trudeau will visit Cornwall on Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

“We are pleased that Mr. Trudeau, the M.P. for Papineau has accepted our invitation to address, members, supporters and those interested in the federal Liberal leadership campaign,” said Jones.

The Stormont Dundas South Glengarry riding association will host a meet and greet for Trudeau at the Best Western Parkway Inn Cabaret Room at 1515 Vincent Massey Drive Cornwall from 4-5:30 p.m.

“This is an open event, anyone from the public that would like to hear Trudeau speak or meet him is welcome to attend, there is no admittance charge, everyone is welcome,” said Jones.

Trudeau was first elected to Parliament in the 2008 general election in the Montreal area riding of Papineau, he was re-elected in 2011.

“As the March 3rd cut off for signing up new members or supporters to be eligible to vote in the Liberal leadership contest Mr. Trudeau’s visit is welcome as an excellent opportunity for residents of this riding to see and hear first-hand why they might want to become involved in this process,” said Jones, “ all leadership candidates have been invited to visit our riding.”

Council, for a time, at the November 5, meeting got bogged down in the details of a plan to expand the Williamsburg recreation building to include library space. 

But in the end, regardless of the details, they all agreed to a motion that moves the Williamsburg libary project forward. 

Design work will be completed to get the project ready for tender. 

In that design work, the lowest cost option that will achieve the library board’s required minimum of 800 square feet for the library branch, will be the option pursued.

The consensus of council is that the job needs to get done and get done properly, but as inexpensively as possible.

CAO Steve McDonald, pointed out that normally, construction costs are estimated at about $150 per square foot, but added that the Dunbar recreation building cost about $118 a square foot.

The net revenue from the rental of the old municipal building to TR Leger School is about $25,000 annually and will be used to offset the cost of the addition.

It was pointed out that this project will bring a library back to Williamsburg, but also provide community space for the village.

At the end of council’s discussions on the matter, South Dundas mayor Steven Byvelds turned his attention to the audience, many of whom have been actively working towards bringing a library back to Williamsburg, and said, “We are trying to get you a library.” 

He pointed out that council is committed to making this happen and asked for patience in the process.

The DC Community Center celebrated its first birthday on Saturday the 27th with an open house.

Fun, food, games, and information were readily available to all.

The center has recently partnered with the Optimist Club, an organization that focuses on helping youth.

The center offers many activities. Some have already started while others will begin soon.

Different nights equal different activities with different leaders.  These programs include activities for youth of all ages up to 18 years.

Some of the activities already underway include game night, sports, and general fun.

Activities to come soon include movie night, paint ball, hobby club, and more sports.

In addition to the youth programs, the center also rents out its facilities.
