Mustard’s Helps Out Area SPCAs

“All this money comes directly from the jars I have sitting out on my counter,” said Jim Mustard, owner of Mustard’s Variety in Iroquois. “People want to help out by donating.”

Mustard collected $1,000 in change and bills in his counter jars over the last year or so.

On Tuesday, April 26, he was able to present two cheques, each for $500, to the SD&G  and the Leeds & Grenville SPCAs.

Marianne Carlyle of Leeds  & Grenville and Carol Link of SD&G were the grateful recipients of the generosity shown by the customers at Mustard’s Variety.

“It’s all customer  relations,” Mustard explained. “People buying something see the jars and often say to keep the change, or they toss their change into the jars. It takes about 12 months to raise $1,000, and then I present the funds to a local charity.”

In the past, Mustard’s counter fundraiser has seen donations go to Naomi House, Calen Laberge, the Dundas County Hospice, Make A Wish Eastern Ontario, the Brody Froats fundraiser, the Canadian Mental Health Association and now the SPCA.

Mustard has been doing his fundraising for about eight years. “I just felt that I could help several causes in the community and offer customers a chance to support worthy causes too.”

“It was a great surprise to hear from Jim,” said Marianne Carlyle. “The cheque is a huge help to us and we are very grateful.”

“It was a surprize to us as well to get the call,” said Carol Link. “We could not do what we do to help animals without community support like this.”

Both say the funds raised at Mustard’s will go to local animal centres. They welcome people to come to the shelters, help with events, perhaps adopt a new friend.

Currently Jim’s collection jars are back on his counter in support of the Seaway Valley Crime Stoppers.

“Their major fundraising golf tournament is taking place in two months,” Mustard said, “and we hope to help them.”
