Mullin backstops Atom B Reps to shut out NGS

The South Dundas “Mudde Farms” Atom B Rep Lions opened against the NGS Braves in Maxville, Friday night, February 19, with a 4-1 victory, and then polished off the four-point series in front of their hometown fans on Saturday, with a 3-0 shutout win.

The Lions will now meet division leading Char-Lan in playoff round two.

The four-point series will open Friday night,  February 26 at 7 p.m. at Char-Lan. Game two will be back in Morrisburg this Sunday, February 28 at 1 p.m. Game three if necessary will see the Lions visit Char-Lan on Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m.

Atom B House forwards James Martens and Wyatt Barkley got the call to suit up for the two games against the Braves with the plan to use three lines to allow them to play “Lions Hockey” for three periods.

Friday night, the Lions bucked a recent trend of slow starts and controlled the play early.

They were rewarded 6:40 in when Martens opened the scoring from a tough angle with Cam Shaver drawing the assist.

They carried the 1-0 lead into the second which they opened in similar fashion to the first period, taking the play to NGS.  This time they scored just three minutes in, and it was a beauty!

Sam Connors worked the puck down low behind the net to Monty Dejong, who took a look and found Kloe Lewis open in the slot.  Dejong laid a perfect pass out to Lewis who used her quick hands to snap it past Braves goaltender Ethan Leroux.

The Lions two goal lead was cut in half with 3:35 left in the second period by the Braves Wyatt Amsing.

The final 1:15 of the second was the turning point of the game when  Dejong went bar down after he pounced on a loose puck. Just as the echo from the Dejong goal was ending, Martens entered the zone and fired a shot from the wing.

Leroux made the save, but couldn’t control the rebound that scooted through to the other side where Barkley was waiting.

Barkley wasted no time, firing the puck back towards the goal and over the goal line before Leroux could get across, enabling the Lions to skate into the third period up by three goals.

A scoreless third period resulted in the 4-1 Lions victory for two points in the four-point series with game two set for Saturday morning in Morrisburg.

Lions goaltender Quade Mullin was rarely tested in this one thanks to his stingy D-men…Austin Roy, Ben Radley, Terrence Mudde, Alek Larocque, and Devon Honders.

The Lions “Game Champ’ was Monty Dejong who played a great two-way game.  He also took the puck wide and down low into the NGS zone where he made some nice passes to his mates.

In game two on Saturday, the Lions again started strong.

They opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal 7:26 in when Dejong wristed one past Leroux on a pass from Barkley.

Mullin made a couple of key saves early to maintain the 1-0 lead and then with 5:31 left, Shaver broke in taking the puck to the right side of the NGS goal, and gaining the attention of goaltender Jane McManus as well as her two defencemen.

Meanwhile, Shaver slid the puck to Barkley who was waiting alone at the “back door” and Barkley quickly fired the puck to the back of the net before McManus could get across.

After Mullin made a huge save on a breakaway to keep the Lions ahead by a pair, Dejong used his head to increase the lead to 3-0, when a Barkley shot ricocheted off his helmet into the twine.

As the game clock ticked away, winger Nick Connors and defenceman Ben Radley did the “Little Things” that help win hockey games.  Connors skated the puck wide into the NGS zone while Radley gained the red line before dumping the puck in deep.  Both plays took valuable time off the clock.  Cooper McCooeye did his part by getting the puck out of his zone.

Then with three minutes remaining in the game, Mullin took the stage. After making an initial save, the rebound went to an NGS forward waiting on the doorstep for a tap in.  Or so everyone in the rink thought.

But Mullin never quit on the play and somehow snatched away a sure goal.  The crowd went wild.

NGS then won the ensuing face off back to the point for a shot on goal, which was tipped on the way through.

It too looked to be heading to the back of the net when Mullin calmly snared it with his glove.

It was a spectacular effort  and backstopped by Mullin, the Lions swept their first playoff round.

The Lions “Game Champ” for this one was easy.  Mullin made two highlight reel saves, stopped a couple of break-aways, and got his first playoff shutout.  All in a days work!
