Terrific Santa Parade in Morrisburg

It wasn’t just parade organizer and marshall George Davies who was beaming from ear to ear on Saturday, December 5, 2015.

The hundreds who turned out to enjoy the annual Santa Claus Parade through the streets of Morrisburg were also having a wonderful time. Many proclaimed that this was the “best parade ever.”

“The weather was just perfect,” Davies said. “Ideal. As far as I’m concerned, this was just a fantastic parade.”

George was a visible and busy presence all along the parade route, chauffered by his grandson, Gareth Cochrane. At the end of the hour long production, he was out on the street directing the traffic near the Hartford Retirement Centre, giving and receiving a lot of thanks and good wishes for Christmas.

He later joined Santa and the volunteers at the Morrisburg Fire Hall for a lunch (the food was largely donated) and some hot drinks.

“A lot of work and hours of effort by volunteers go into the floats and the other parts of the parade,” said Lori Davies, who also helped organize and run the big parade. “I think the day has gone very well.”

There were some spectacular, beautifully decorated and lit  floats in this year’s parade, including, to name just a few, the Snow Princess created by the Iroquois-Matilda Lions and the Operating Engineers’ Santa Train.

It was evident to everyone watching that companies, churches, service organizations, schools and families had put a lot of thought and effort into making this annual Santa Claus parade ‘one for the books.’

Cadets, 1812 re-enactors, marching bands, horses, decked out dogs, even some jaunty mules, and many, many colourful, costumed characters walked the parade route, passing out candy and good cheer to the eager crowds.

The high light of the parade was, of course, the arrival, direct from the North Pole, of Santa and Mrs. Claus. While they couldn’t stay long (things are very busy at the Elf Workshops), they certainly brightened everyone’s day.

“Dad is already busy planning next year’s parade,” laughed Lori Davies. “He lives to do this. Dad is just never going to get old.”
