Easter Seals big winner at annual Ball Hockey Tournament

Brian and Tracey Shaver, organizers of the 2015 Ball Hockey for Easter Seals Tournament are calling the event a “huge success.”

“We raised over $5,700 for Easter Seals,” said Brian Shaver, “the second largest total to date. This brings our 14 year total (for Easter Seals) to over $51,000.” Individuals and area businesses also donated generous prizes and financial support to the Tournament.

Eight mixed teams entered the tournament, held at the Jason Whitteker Park in Williamsburg on Saturday, October 24. Competition was fast and furious, with three games going into overtime. When it was all over, the A Champs were Team Morrell, while Team Francis took the B championship. The winners will have their names engraved on plaques.

However, the biggest winner at the 14 annual Tournament was Easter Seals.

All the funds raised by the Tournament go to support Easter Seals Ontario, which is pledged to help kids with physical disabilities succeed. Easter Seals ensures that children have the special medical, mobility and communication devices they need to lead independent and accomplished lives. The organization picks up where the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Assistive Devices program leave off. Easter Seals also operates summer camps with specially trained staff so that no child has to miss out on the fun.

Representing Easter Seals at the Williamsburg Ball Hockey Tournament was Sasha Hart, who suffers from Currarino Triad Syndrome.

“Easter Seals support is very important for our family,” said her parents, Bobby Jack and Tara Hart. “We receive a grant through Easter Seals for Sasha’s medical supplies. She is actively involved in dance and sports, and our entire family is here with the O’Neill’s Pub team to take part in the Tournament.”

Deanna McKillican, representing Easter Seals was on hand throughout the day to assist with the Williamsburg fund raiser.

“Easter Seals really relies on an event like this one,” she said. “The Ball Hockey and the annual Snowarama are the only local fund raisers left.” The top pledge getter of the day was Bobby Jack Hart who brought in $1200.

“Brian and I began this tournament 14 years ago,” said organizer Tracey Shaver. “By now, it practically runs itself. Both our dads have been out on the road (they’ve been doing this for years) finding sponsors, and once again, people have been very generous. O’Neill’s Pub is a new sponsor this year and they have donated a lot of prizes and funds. We are really delighted with all the support out there.”

“A lot of familiar faces return every year,” said Brian Shaver. “They go above and beyond by recruiting new players, raising money or by gathering prizes. It was encouraging to see some new faces this year along with an injection of youth.”
