It’s been almost 10 years since South Dundas residents connected to the Williamsburg municipal sewer have seen an increase to their sewer charges.

But that will change with their next tax bill.

South Dundas municipal staff told council at the water and wastewater budget meeting held April 22, at the South Dundas Municipal Centre, that sewer charges need to be increased right away.

It was decided that for 2015, the sewer charge, which appears on their property tax bill, will jump from $98 to $150. 

With recent upgrades to the electrical panel and the replacement of two primary pumps, the Williamsburg sewer reserve has been significantly depleted.

Even with the $52 increase, that will only bring in about $2,600 to add back into the reserve, according to South Dundas treasurer Shannon Geraghty.

“We need to address this and start building the reserve back up to a comfortable level,” warned Geraghty.

“It’s something that has to be done,” said South Dundas mayor Evonne Delegarde.

This increase will be implemented right away and staff will further review and assess the need for further increases in future years as they update the bylaw and mapping.

“For someone who’s just over three feet tall, and born with a rare bone disease, life is always a work in progress,” says Jaime A. Adams, the little girl who was born in 1977 and raised in Iroquois.

Jaime, remembered by so many as the subject of community support efforts throughout the 1980s when the small town rallied around the daughter of Glen and Lorraine Adams with Morquio Syndrome, has written a book about her life, from her perspective.

In “Mommy, when can we go to church?”, a 60 page autobiography, Jaime tells her story of how faith and determination have helped her reach milestones, no one ever thought possible.

Jaime’s parents were told that she had a short life expectancy, maybe 10 years.

This story is not one of lofty achievements, but rather the ability of someone, who despite the odds, continues to move forward, no matter how difficult.

“Writing my autobiography wasn’t all that easy,” Jaime tells The Leader. 

“I wanted to write a book to help people who are going through similar issues. Whether you are a little person or not, we all have difficulties, young or old.”

The book follows Jaime, from procedure to procedure, but shows the impact of these from the perspective of a young child.

“I wanted readers to feel like they were there with me. In order to do that I had to go back there in my mind and re-live those experiences. That was tough.”

“Writing this book has helped me to analyze my childhood emotions,” says Jaime. 

Through dealing with two emotional breakdowns, and coping with much anger, Jaime discovered, that through everything her faith in God had gotten stronger, not weaker.

“My health today is great,” says Jaime. “Stronger than ever.”

Jaime now lives in Brockville. She has degrees in business administration, marketing, medical terminology and is working on web design courses, but remains unemployed. 

Jaime hopes to find employment to help her afford a vehicle so she can continue working towards getting her driver’s licence.

She plans to write more books, but says that too takes money.

November 12th marked the official opening of Fred and Mattie Zandbergen’s new business.

Fred told those assembled for the event that he and wife Mattie had been thinking of starting this venture for a number of years and, finally, after selling Fred’s Farm Supplies, the time was right.

The Zandbergen’s hired Hosers Car Care for the project. Phil Johnston, site manager from the Belleville Hosers Car Care, was responsible for the project “from the site plan right through to the finished project. The whole bit.”

According to Johnston, who “just joined the company recently,” Hosers Car Care owns five car washes itself, but also deals in repairs, supplies to “entire turn key operations for other car washes.”

The Zandbergen’s car wash has three car bays, two of which are drive through with doors on both sides. There are also two vacuum stations, a change machine, and a vending machine for your convenience.

Each wash costs $3 for four minutes. It is also possible to purchase tokens. Each token gives four minutes of wash time. According to Fred, right now you can purchase tokens at a 20 per cent discount. So, instead of paying $12 for four tokens, you would only pay $10.

He mentioned that they’d make great stocking stuffers for Christmastime.

Fred told the Leader that in just two weeks the car wash has made “50 per cent of the targeted proceeds – what you can expect to make once things are running smoothly in like a year from now.”

During speeches at the grand opening, SD&G MP Guy Lauzon told the Zandbergens, “I want to wish you the most success. Thank you for South Dundas. It continues to grow, grow and grow.”

South Dundas Deputy-Mayor Jim Locke said, “all I can do is echo Guy’s words. This is a great addition to the village of Morrisburg.”
