South Dundas Good Neighbour Awards

Four individuals were honoured on Saturday, October 17, with Good Neighbour awards at Dundas Country Good Neighbour Gala held at the Williamsburg Odd Fellows Hall.

From South Dundas, the winners were David Lapier and Mallory Trizisky, while Elva Patterson-Rutters and Eric Mikkonen were chosen from North Dundas.

The second annual gala, organized by Linking Hands, a project of the House of Lazarus Community Outreach Mission, drew more than 50 people to the Hall. The event recognized the efforts of 14 Dundas residents who have generously given their time, energy and efforts to many initiatives throughout their communities.

“The impetus of our organization (Linking Hands) is to find ways to connect the wealth of resources,” said MC Nancy Christie, “and to make sure that no one goes in need. The biggest part of this is neighbour to neighbour, everyone looking out for each other. We encourage that neighbourliness so common in rural areas. These 14 people were nominated for honours because they show that neighbourliness.”

On hand to join in the congratulations of the four winners were North Dundas mayor Eric Duncan, South Dundas mayor Evonne Delegarde and MP Guy Lauzon. Area young people provided the musical entertainment at the ceremony, and helped serve the refreshments.

“I really didn’t expect this award,” said South Dundas Youth winner, Mallory Trizisky. She is an active member of the Leos organization, sponsored by the Morrisburg and District Lions Club, and takes part in all of their community work. She is part of her St. Joseph’s High School Youth group, and makes a point of volunteering for as many community events as she can.

“I love helping others,” 14-year-old Trizisky, a grade 10 student, said. “It makes me feel I’m doing something good. I didn’t expect this award, but I am so excited to win it.”

David Lapier was nominated for the South Dundas adult award by Janet Carkner and Heather MacPherson.

“He does so much for South Dundas,” they said in their nomination letter. “David exemplifies the qualities of a good citizen, by his complete involvement in every kind of community event (like the Williamsburg Harvest Festival), and his participation in local sports teams.”

“We have a great community here,” Lapier said, after accepting his Good Neighbour award. “This is the best place in the world.”

The North Dundas Good Neighbour youth winner was Eric Mikkonen, who is a flight sergeant with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, 5 Cyclone, a volunteer with the Thrift Store and involved in many community events. Adult honouree Elva Patterson-Rutters has volunteered for years with service groups and fund raising organizations throughout North Dundas, also sitting on hospital boards and working with Gracefield Christian Camp.
