Monday, the South Dundas Sparks Brownies and Guides were busy assembling cookie boxes, but at this time of year, it wasn’t for cookies.
The group of 37 girls packed up 40 birthday boxes, to donate to the Dundas County Food Bank in Morrisburg.
A birthday box is a self-contained package with everything needed to have a child’s birthday party.
This birthday box project is the club’s service project.
The project has been so well received that they do it every year – this being the fifth annual.
The leaders explain to the girls that every person deserves some recognition on their birthday. However, certain circumstances occur that might not make that possible.
With that in mind, the girls are asked to bring in items to help someone celebrate a birthday.
It includes a cake and cake pan, icing, candles, balloons, streamers, paper plates/cups/napkins and a novelty item.
All involved love this project. “It’s a way to provide material items to help facilitate a happy birthday party,” say the leaders.
“It’s nice to help them, so they can celebrate,” Olivia MacDonald, a 10 year old Guide. “It’s fun to get all these things and to do this with all your friends,” said Allie Eamon, an 8 year old Brownie.
“The girls look forward to this all year,” said Allie’s mom Jenn. “They love to go and pick out all the things for the boxes.”
