Minor Pioneer 1’s end season in third spot

 

The Minor Pioneer 1’s winning streak ended at six on Monday, July 13th in Kemptville, with a 14-9 loss to the first place Kemptville 1 team.  

The Pioneers came out flat in the opening four innings and never really got going until they scored five runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game 9-9.  

Unfortunately, Kemptville 1 put their last bat to good use and returned the favour for their 14-9 win.

Scoring for the Pioneers were Wyatt Barkley (3), Brayden Barrie (2), Stef Kronstal, Quinten Barrie, Ben Radley, and Monty Dejong.

The Pioneers got right back to work at home Tuesday night as they hosted Kemptville 3 and came up with a 10-7 victory. Right from the warm up, the Pioneers had more “jump” in this one.  

The top of the first was highlighted by an amazing catch in right field by Aiden Hutt who used his goaltending skills to make the “save”.  

Kemptville brought one run to the plate then Dejong took over with 2 strike outs.  

The Pioneers scored four runners in their half of the first inning to jump ahead 4-1 with runs counted by Barkley, Rory Gilmour, Brayden Barrie and Kronstal.

Ben Radley, who took the mound for the next two innings, scattered five strikeouts and surrendered just 1 run.  

Barkley, Gilmour, and Hutt helped tack on another three runs to give the Pioneers a 7-2 lead after three but Kemptville counted the maximum 5 runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game 7-7.  

Quinten Barrie had a highlight catch in the fourth when he snagged a fly in left and the Pioneers rose to the challenge in with runs from Gilmour, Brayden Barrie, and Kronstal for the 10-3 lead.  

Cam Shaver then nailed it down with 3 straight strikeouts to get the save.

This was the last game of the season and it left the Pioneers with an impressive record of 8 wins and 6 losses, put together after they lost the first four games of the season. for third place.  Their record put them third in the standings.

The Pioneers returned to the diamond in Williamsburg on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t for a game as they held their Allstar Competition.  

It was a great night with everyone having fun while competing hard.  The events were two different home run derbies, base race (fastest runner), pitching accuracy, and cutoff man relay.  

Kronstal and Dejong were crowned Derby champs.  Barkley sped his way to victory in the base race.  The Barrie boys and Shaver teamed up to win the relay while Shaver won the pitching accuracy event.
