Minor Pioneers rolling with six wins in a row

The Minor Pioneer Ones are still rolling!  They’ve now won six in a row with wins over Winchester, 12-8 and Prescott, 10-7.

The Pioneers travelled to Winchester, Tuesday, July 7th for the 12-8 win, which got started when Brayden Barrie and Stef Kronstal crossed home plate in the top of the first. Winchester replied in their half of the inning with the maximum five runs to go ahead, 5-2.

The Pioneers tied the game at five in the top of the second when Luke Byvelds, Aiden Hutt, and Logan Tait scored.

Cam Shaver took the mound in the bottom of the second, and got out of a bases loaded jam thanks to his fastball.

The game was tied at five until the Pioneers tacked on another four runs from Quinten Barrie, Hudson Fetterly, Byvelds, and Hutt in the third.  Rory Gilmour had a clutch double with two outs to score Byvelds and Hutt.

Winchester got to Shaver in their half of the third.  They led the inning with back to back singles before Shaver fanned the next two batters.

It looked as though the Pioneers would dodge another bullet, but the next batter slapped a single into the field cashing in two.

Shaver battled some control issues as that base runner would eventually score on a wild pitch.

Once again Winchester would load the bases.

Shaver was able to end the threat with his sixth strikeout of the night, and the Pioneers found themselves clinging to a 9-8 lead after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, Shaver doubled to cash in Kronstal and Quinten Barrie, and Fetterly knocked in Shaver to make it 12-8.

Gilmour, who pitched the fourth, fielded a ground ball for the first out, then struck out the next batter for a two up.  The next two The game was called in the fifth due to the rain, leaving the Pioneers with the 12-8 win.

Ben Radley got the Wednesday night start, when the Pioneers hosted Prescott, for the 10-7 win.

Radley struck out the leadoff hitter and Monty Dejong made a nice grab on a line drive for out number two.  Then second baseman Wyatt Barkley scooped up a grounder and fired a strike to Dejong at first for the third out.

Barkley then did some damage on offence, as he and Gilmour both scored to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead after one.

Once again Radley started the inning with a strikeout. However this time, he fell behind 3 and 0 before firing three straight strikes.  The next two batters grounded out.

Fetterly, Byvelds, and Hutt all scored in the second to give the Pioneers a 5-0 lead after two.

Shaver took the hill in the third and was roughed up for four runs to cut the lead to one, but the Pioneers got most of them back in their half of the third.

Kronstal drew a leadoff walk, followed by a screamer down to third by Quinten Barrie.  It was too hot for the third baseman to handle so both runners were safe. The Pioneers used some plate discipline to walk their way to another three runs before the end of the third.

They opened the fourth up 8-4.  With two outs and two on base, Prescott used an inside the park home run to pull within one at 8-7 but Brayden Barrie and Gilmour scored to increase the Pioneer lead to 10-7 heading to the fifth.

Gilmour was given the rock in the top of the fifth.  He walked the leadoff hitter before taking care of business.  He got the save by recording the final three outs on his own.  A strikeout, then Gilmour caught a popup before nailing it down with another strikeout.

The coaching staff felt that this was the Pioneers best game of the year.  Both teams had great pitching and defense, as well as some timely offence.

The boys have accepted coach Bob Fetterly’s challenge of not changing his “lucky” camo shorts until we lose. It’s a challenge that was issued way back on June 22.

The Pioneers were in Kemptville on Monday night and were at home for their season finale on Tuesday.

This Saturday they travel to Kemptville, for the one day playoff tourney.
