Canada’s 148th birthday party was a little belated here in Morrisburg, nonetheless the Morrisburg Canada Day Committee was happy with the celebration.
“We were so upset we had to cancel the celebrations on Wednesday, but we had no choice,” said committee member Jim Martin, of the decision to postpone the July 1 event due to heavy rain.
“It was just too wet to bring in the stage, and the fireworks people told us it was too wet for them too,” said Martin. “It was a hard decision, but I think we did the right thing.”
The Morrisburg event was postponed until Saturday, July 4.
“The turnout Saturday was terrific,” said Martin. Organizers estimated attendance at 2,000.
The ever popular fireworks display did not disappoint, although it experienced an additional delay.
“They were delayed about 45 minutes because there were boaters too close to the area where the fireworks were being ignited,” explained Martin. So, those letting off the fireworks had to wait until the boaters were at a safe distance for the show to start.
The Canada Day Committee, which is stand alone committee, comprised of about a dozen volunteers, received a lot of positive feedback from the event and are thankful for the donations received from sponsors and from those who contributed by the day of the event. Martin said that people came from all over to enjoy the festivities here.
The committee is looking forward to 2017 which will be Canada’s 150th birthday.
“We are planning to go bigger and better for that year,” said Martin. “And, I’m not just talking about fireworks. Our hope is to make it a two day event and to add more activities for adults,” said Martin, suggesting dinner and entertainment the evening before Canada Day.
The Canada Day Committee is always looking for volunteers, and especially for some people with fresh ideas. “We’re looking forward to future celebrations, and especially 2017.”
The hope is, in future years, the weather is a little more cooperative.
