Antiquefest under the tents this weekend

Members of the Morrisburg & District Lions Club and the Iroquois-Matilda Lions Club are expressing their gratitude to MacEwen Petroleum of Morrisburg for their generosity in once again sponsoring the 7th South Dundas Senior Christmas Concert coming up at Matilda Hall in Dixon’s Corners on Saturday, November 24th. 

Karen Ouderkirk, Morrisburg MacEwen C Store owner, who has championed this event for several years, explains the South Dundas Seniors Concert is an opportunity to thank the community for their support in a meaningful and significant way. 

In lending her support and endorsement, Ouderkirk points out that the two Lions clubs have put together a comprehensive package for South Dundas seniors, by pooling their resources to decorate Matilda Hall, provide transportation, and ensure a joyful afternoon which includes festive Christmas music, exceptional refreshments and the fellowship of friends. And it is all free of charge to concert goers.  

The doors at Matilda Hall will open at 1:30 p.m. and the concert will run from 2-4 p.m. 

Back by popular demand are Ron Whitteker and his band, “Good Time Country” who will provide toe tapping and traditional Christmas tunes! Once the concert concludes, members of both Lions Clubs will serve refreshments while Santa Claus and friends make an appearance!  

This event is offered at no cost to the Seniors of south Dundas Township.

Dozens of area residents attended the TransCanada Energy East Pipeline Open House November 20, at Matilda Hall, Dixon’s Corners to learn more about the proposed multi-billion project.

“This is a $12 billion project – One of the biggest infrastructure projects in the history of the country,” said TransCanada spokesperson Tim Duboyce.

This open house which had a dozen TransCanada experts on hand to answer questions is part of the extensive consultative process that the company has undertaken.

October 30, TransCanada Corporation filed the formal application for the Energy East Pipeline Project with the Nation Energy Board of Canada.

The NEB has 15 months to process the application and hold their own consultative process before presenting their report to the federal government.

“Ultimately, this is a federal government decision,” said Duboyce.

If the government approves the project early (January-February) in  2016 and all goes as planned, the Energy East Pipeline will go into operation at the end of 2018, including the conversion and the new build. 

Energy East is a 4,600 km pipeline that will carry approximately 1.1 million of barrels of crude oil per day from Alberta and Saskatchewan to refineries in Eastern Canada.

Major components of the project include converting a section of an existing natural gas pipeline to an oil transportation pipeline. That conversion runs from North Bay to the existing station at Iroquois.

New pipeline will be built to link up with the converted pipe from Iroquois through Quebec to New Brunswick.

Along with that new pipeline construction will come the construction of the associated facilities, pump stations and tank terminals required to move crude oil from Alberta to Quebec and New Brunswick.

The project includes the construction of new terminals along the route, one in Saskatchewan, one in Cacouna, Quebec, and one in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Approximately 70 per cent of the pipeline is already in the ground and more than half of the new pipeline segments will run parallel to existing pipeline rights of way.

Converting one of the pipelines in the Canadian Mainline natural gas transmission system to crude oil service will make better use of the capacity of the Canadian Mainline that is no longer needed to export natural gas to the United States, explained Duboyce.

Along with the Energy East Pipeline project application, TransCanada also filed an application to build and operate the Eastern Mainline Pipeline Project in Southern Ontario. This proposed $1.5 billion, 600 mmcf/d project will provide an additional 250 km of natural gas pipeline in an area where the demand and need are strong – the Toronto to Montreal corridor – providing greater access to affordable new natural gas supplies from the northeastern United States.

A local open house for that Eastern Mainline natural gas pipeline project will take place December 3, 2014 at the Iroquois Civic Centre.

That proposed natural gas pipeline will primarily follow the existing route where TransCanada currently operates two natural gas pipelines.

On March 23, 2015, Susanne Donaldson of Morrisburg, Ontario, pleaded guilty to three counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act.

 The charges included: Causing distress to an animal; Permitting distress to an animal; Failing to provide veterinary medical attention

 On September 3, 2014, the Ontario SPCA received a call concerning a sick dog and very young puppies.  An Ontario SPCA Investigator arrived at the Morrisburg address and was met by the owner Ms. Donaldson, who explained she had just returned from an animal hospital where her female dog had been euthanized.

Ms. Donaldson explained that her 3-year-old Boxer had given birth to 11 puppies five days earlier, and had not been eating or drinking for the past several days.

 Ms. Donaldson stated that the veterinarian had explained that her dog had a retained placenta and was in very poor condition. Of the 11 puppies, only seven were still alive. Three were stillborn and one died on Sunday, according to Ms. Donaldson.

 The remaining seven puppies were foul smelling with open and swollen wounds on their tails from elastics Ms. Donaldson had put on them several days earlier in an attempt to amputate the tails.  

Ms. Donaldson voluntarily surrendered the puppies to the Ontario SPCA. 

The deceased female Boxer was found to be in poor physical condition and was emaciated.

 The puppies were taken to a veterinary hospital, examined and provided with the care they required. 

Over the next several days, the puppies received 24-hour care in a foster home, including frequent veterinary care, however the puppies failed to thrive and unfortunately died.

 Susanne Donaldson was sentenced with a $500 fine, placed on probation for two years, and was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $120.68. 

Ms. Donaldson was also prohibited from owning animals for five years. Ontario SPCA officers were granted access to her property to ensure compliance with the prohibition order.
