Enhancing fish habitat at Port of Johnstown

South Nation Conservation is working with the Port of Johnstown to complete a fish habitat creation project along the St. Lawrence River. Work is underway to expand a wetland in Johnstown Bay into a larger, more beneficial area for fish.

“The Port is drawing on our expertise from similar fish habitat projects to ensure the project is successful and cost effective,” says Michelle Cavanagh, SNC Fish and Wildlife Resource Technician.

The 1 acre wetland will include a variety of shoreline structures to create diverse habitat. Two deep pools will support large, game fish species and shallow, weedy areas are suited for small fish.

“After months of planning, we’re excited to begin construction” says Cavanagh, adding SNC will monitor the wetland while work is being carried out and every spring and fall for the next three years to see which fish species are using the new habitat.

This spring, SNC is creating a buffer of trees, shrubs, and wildflowers around the wetland that extends along the warf. This will improve water quality and prevent erosion and surface runoff. Adding aquatic plants in the wetlands, including water lilies, pickerel weed, and wild rice, will oxygenate the water which improves habitat.

Installation of root wads and log clusters will also provide additional areas of cover and spawning habitat. These woody structures will help keep the vegetation from clogging up the wetland.

SNC, in partnership with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, developed a Fish Habitat Compensation Plan to satisfy the federal Fisheries Act requirements for the construction of the Port’s new wharf. This is the first of two compensation projects that SNC will complete under the Plan.

Excavation will begin this month with the entire project wrapping up in May.

Care Close to Home – Stop the Clot!

Welcome to Care Close to Home – an ‘inside view’ of Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH).  Learn about our services – as well as how to take care of your own health.  This month, we’re talking about VTE, including what you need to know before you travel.

Stop the Clot!

It’s called Venous Thromboembolism or VTE and it is a life-threatening condition.  At WDMH, the entire care team is working hard to prevent it.

VTE is essentially a blood clot that can travel through your bloodstream to your lungs. It is more likely to happen when you are unwell or less active than usual. Some surgeries or longer stays in the hospital can increase the risk of VTE.

A new program at WDMH ensures that every patient is assessed for VTE, and that those at risk receive special treatment and medication. Everyone has a role to play in keeping patients safe. If you are coming to the hospital, ask about VTE and tell your healthcare team if you have a history of blood clots or other risk factors such as:  recent surgeries, recent trauma or injury particularly to legs, cancer, age, chronic medical conditions, obesity, blood disorders, pregnancy and use of contraception or hormone replacement therapy.

Travel Safe

Another time to think about blood clots is when you travel and may be sitting for extended periods in a car, train or plane. If you are planning a long trip, speak with your doctor and follow these simple tips:

Take breaks often. If possible, get up out of your seat and walk around to get the blood moving.

Stretch/flex your calf muscles while sitting.

Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic beverages.

Avoid constrictive or tight clothing around your waist, legs and feet. Consider taking your shoes off or wearing compression stockings.

Local impact of gas tax

In an effort to provide support to local communities our Government has taken action through Canada’s Gas Tax Fund.

In recent years, the Gas Tax Fund has been extended, doubled, indexed and made permanent.

These improvements to Canada’s Gas Tax Fund provide predictable, long-term funding for Canadian municipalities to help them build and revitalize public infrastructure while creating jobs and long-term prosperity.

The Gas Tax Fund is providing Ontarians, including the constituents of SDSG, with stable funding that will have a tangible impact on their quality of life and the long-term sustainability of their communities.

Through the Gas Tax Fund, municipalities across Ontario have benefited from close to $4.7 billion in predictable and flexible funding for local priorities since the program began.

Municipalities have been able to distribute these funds into drinking water, wastewater infrastructure, public transit, community energy systems, solid waste management, and local roads. By investing these funds in important local infrastructure we are creating jobs, promoting growth and building strong, prosperous communities across Canada, and right here in SDSG.

As announced in Economic Action Plan 2013, the eligible categories for the Gas Tax Fund will be expanded and the Fund will be indexed at two per cent a year in $100-million increments, starting in 2014.

This represents $21.8 billion in flexible, long-term funding for municipal infrastructure.

This expansion will now allow municipalities to invest in projects supporting culture, tourism, sport and recreation; disaster mitigation; broadband communication systems; highways; short-line rail; short-sea shipping; brownfield redevelopment; and local and regional airports.

In 2013 to 2014, SDSG municipalities have received the following funding to support its local infrastructure priorities: Cornwall – $2,819,953; South Glengarry – $395,094; South Stormont – $384,051; North Stormont – $207,639; South Dundas -$323,621; North Dundas – $340,339.

I am confident that Canada’s Gas Tax Fund provides long-term funding to help SDSG communities build and revitalize their local infrastructures.

Smile cookies for WDMH

Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign has been supporting local communities since 1996.

Fast forward ten years, and the Winchester location made its first gift benefitting the WDMH Foundation in support of the Winchester District Memorial Hospital.

Since then, a total of $55,267 has been given to the WDMH Foundation, as a result of the Smile Cookie Campaigns at Tim Hortons locations in Long Sault, Morrisburg and Winchester.

This year, $8,304 was raised, and the cookies were so popular that they sold out before the campaign was over.

Owners Denise and Robert St. Denis, along with their nephew, Corey Adams, and all of the staff at the three locations, have worked tirelessly every year during the Smile Cookie Campaign in the last week of September.

They believe in supporting WDMH, and they want to see the campaign succeed for the Hospital.

Troy Cross, Executive Director of the WDMH Foundation shared his gratitude, “many thanks to all of the customers who purchased a Smile Cookie this past fall, and to the hard-working staff at every location for helping to put smiles on patients’ faces with every sale”.

John Grant

John Grant, lifetime owner of Auto Trac, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on January 17, 2014. He was 73.

John will be missed by his best friend and devoted wife of 53 years Ann and by his four adoring strong willed children, Ian (Myrla), Susan (Gary), Colin (Sue), and Joann (Gord).

John was blessed to have three beautiful granddaughters, Miranda (Danny), Marcie (Matt), and Amber (Geoff) and four handsome great grandsons, Conlan, Owen, Hudson and Levi who loved him dearly and will miss their grandpa very much. He is remembered also by Melanie, Shelby, Holly and Joel.

John was predeceased by his parents William (Bill) and Marion (Brown). He is survived by his only sister Elizabeth and nieces Julie and Lisa, his Aunt Agnes in Toronto, cousin Linda in Ottawa along with several family members Scotland.

John was born in Bo’ness Scotland, on December 7, 1940, and immigrated to Montreal in 1950, with his family. He grew up in Montreal, never missing out on fun (good and bad).

John worked at Henry Birks & Sons in Montreal, where he learned the Silver Spinning trade. This enabled him to make beautiful candlesticks for his family in recent years.

On September 15, 1961, in Longueuil, Quebec, John married Anne, the love of his life. They lived in St. Hubert, until they moved to Spencerville in 1967.

John became a licensed mechanic and worked for the Canadian Tire Company. He opened his own business in Spencerville, in the late 1970’s until moving it close to home in Crystal Rock in 1988. He became a Belarus tractor dealer and served farmers throughout Eastern Ontario and Quebec.

John survived various injuries and illnesses from the early age of 14 when he was hit by a car, to breaking his back and various other bones later, to tonsil cancer in 2005.

John’s health caught up to him. In later years he needed an artificial knee and hip and enteral feeds, but he took everything in stride. In his words he lived a lot longer than he had expected, and was able to see his children and grandchildren married and have great-grandchildren.

John’s passion was cars, speed and singing. He enjoyed it all, from drag racing with his friend Bill to his obsession with Formula 1 and Indy car racing, to Cub Kars, and singing with the Spencerville Community Choir.

John lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed by many friends and business associates, especially life-time friends Bill (Diane) Jones and Molly Faessen and her children Nancy (Vasko) and Adam who were always thought of as family.

A special thank you to Papa Larry for all his friendship, support and special meals over the years.

At John’s request there will be no visitation. A private service will be held and interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The business will continue to operate and John would be honoured for any donations in his memory to the Spencerville Community Choir.

Arrangements were entrusted to MacKay Funeral Home at www.mackayfuneralhome.com
