Canadian Club season is here

There is nothing that prepares us for how quickly the summer will pass. This year was no exception. Where did it go?

All I know is what a wonderful season the Canadian Club had last year – and the local speakers rated very high on the chart.  The largest crowd  in  recent years, came to hear Dr. Wayne Domanko speak on his involvement in our medical system over the last 40 or so years.

It is, once again, the pleasure of the Canadian Club membership committee to inform the public of the upcoming season.

Membership costs remain the same as last year at $95 per person, and that includes six meetings (dinner and speaker).  

The executive invites member to come early and enjoy the pre-dinner  reception – cheese,  crackers, and juice – beginning  around 6:30 p.m.

Our first speaker of the season – after a roast beef dinner – on September 18, will be Pamela MacDonald, who has been with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency since 2001. Pamela will provide a presentation on Canadian Food Safety.

On October 16, (roast pork dinner), Chris MacDonald, will speak on “Unions and Their Role in Canada”.

The final speaker of the fall season will be Tony Glen scheduled for just after Remembrance Day. 

Tony, the Director of Collection at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, will provide insight into ‘Ensuring a Future for the Past: the Challenges of Museums.”

After the winter break, the Canadian Club will meet on March 19, when roast pork will be on the menu and the speaker will be Rev. Daniel Hayward –Pastor of the United Churches of South Stormont. Rev Hayward will provide a light-hearted look at life. 

Roast turkey is on the menu for April, when Ron Bonnet, a local farmer, will speak about  the “Canadian Agriculture’s Contribution to our Economy and the World”.

The final meeting will be on May 21, 2014, at which time the speaker will be the “Area Crime Prevention” officer from Long Sault, who will speak on what is happening in the real world and how people can protect ourselves.

The Canadian Club membership committee hopes everyone will them – either by way of membership – or as a visitor.

Hi. I am a beautiful female, shepherd mix (4-5 years old) and was rescued in the Dundela area. I am very calm, very friendly and house-trained. I don’t understand what has happened, but I am looking forward to a new forever home.

Bulldog with Special Needs

Hi. I am a purebred female American Bull Dog. I am about four years old and house trained. I am very protective. Little Lass Needs a Home (Adopted)

Hi. I’m a bit of a mystery, but Kevin thinks I am a lab-shepherd mix because of my tri-colours, black white and tan. The ladies who took my picture think I am adorable with my spotted front feet and big white patch. I am still a puppy, (female about five months old) and I was very excited to see them…just as friendly as could be. I was rescued in the Moose Creek area.

MPP responds to bed cuts with petition

Local MPP Jim McDonell was quick to react to Winchester District Memorial Hospital’s announced bed closure last week.

Within a few hours of the announcement McDonell issued a press release from Queen’s Park.

“Winchester District Memorial Hospital announced the permanent closure of 14 beds earlier today, which equates to more than 22 per cent of their total capacity,” reads the release. 

The MPP is concerned with the impact this will have on the community. 

“At a time when the senior population of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry has increased and requires access to acute and chronic healthcare, the Government’s funding approach is causing local beds to close,” said MPP McDonell. 

“We have seen the present government slowly and silently eroding the provision of health services. While they may claim to be encouraging home care and other alternative health provisions, they focus more on creating expensive levels of administration and agencies such as Local Health Integration Networks, rather than actually delivering patient services. WDMH provides an essential service in an area that does not have easy access to either the Cornwall area or Ottawa hospitals – their ability to respond to any health situation that may arise is dependent on their capacity.”

 “WDMH is an essential service for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, providing excellent care and stable, local skilled jobs. Enough is enough. The funding cuts that led to this closure are unacceptable and the Minister of Health must be held to account. I have created a petition against the closure of the 14 beds at WDMH, I encourage the community to sign in so that I can present it in the Legislature and show the Minister the terrific support for our highly recognized hospital.  It is available on my website and at my office.”
