Jean Markell

A lifetime resident of the area, Jackouline MacNeil (nee Merkley) passed away suddenly at home on Monday, July 15, 2013.  She was 59.

Jackouline was born in Brockville on February 8, 1954 to her parents Ralph and Dora Merkley (nee Armstrong) and lived her entire life on Hutt Road.

On May 7, 1977 she married John MacNeil and together they had four children Cecil, Little John, Donald and Victoria.  

Jackouline was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and she enjoyed spending time with her family.  

She enjoyed baking and cooking for her family and making costumes celebrating special occasions such as Christmas and Halloween.  

Christmas was her favourite time of year and her favourite television shows were Heartland and Coronation Street.

Jackouline is survived by her husband John, her children Cecil (Ashley Pope) of R.R#  3 Williamsburg, Little John (Julie Edmonds) of  R.R.# 1 Iroquois, Donald (Jesse Hitsman) of Morrisburg and Victoria MacNeil at home and her siblings Edith (Duane) Gore of Glen Becker, Ralph Merkley of Ottawa and Roy (Sheila) Merkley of Riverside Heights.  

Jackouline will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Bryce, Samaraha, Mason, Zack, Alicia and Jake.  

She was predeceased by her sisters Flossie Royle and Muriel Bylow and her brothers Cyril, Alan, Albert, Ross, Oliver, Ivan, Robert, Garnet, Don, Earl, Hubert and Jack Merkley.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.    

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  

Funeral service was held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, July 18th at 11 a.m., with Pastor Marcel Charette officiating.  

Cremation followed.  Interment of cremated remains will be at Spruce Haven Cemetery, Brinston.

A lifetime resident of the area, Elva Baker passed away at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Monday, November 7, 2011. She was 91.

Elva was born in Winchester Township, on February 22, 1920, to her parents Samuel and Carrie De Clare (nee Jannack).  Because Elva’s mother was a live-in housekeeper for the Honorable George Challies, MPP, Elva lived north of Morrisburg with her aunt and uncle Elmer and Gladys Jannack during her public school days. During her  high school years, she lived with Maria Murdock in Morrisburg. 

On March 22, 1938, Elva married Merne Baker, and together they were blessed with the arrival of two sons, Ray and Dale.  Her husband, like many of the husbands back then, served his country as a member of the Canadian Army during World War 2.  

With her husband serving in the war, Elva was left to raise her two young sons.  She worked at the Tack Factory in Morrisburg to support her family until Merne returned.  

After the war, Merne returned home, and he and Elva were blessed with the birth of their daughter Debbie in 1946, and their son Dennis in 1952.  

Merne resumed his job as salesman for Wonder Bakeries and Elva began her retail career in the York store in the old town of Morrisburg. Then after the Seaway, she continued her sales career for many years in the Beamish store in the new shopping centre.  

She later worked for Mac Wilson at the Rexall Drug store until she stopped to care for her mother who had become ill. After her mother’s passing, she went to work at McGillis Hardware and remained there for many years until she retired in 1982.  

Elva was a very active member of the community.  She enjoyed playing darts, bowling and cards.  In the winter months she excelled at curling and shuffle board until her health problems forced her to retire from sporting activities.  She also enjoyed many bus trips to Florida with her family and friends.  

Elva was an active member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary of Branch 48, Morrisburg for many years, having held several different offices, including president.  She was also the catering coordinator for the Ladies Auxiliary for many years, until her health prevented her from fulfilling those duties.  

Following Merne’s death in 1979, Elva lived alone in her home at 54 Loyalist Street until moving to the Hartford Home in November of 2009. She lived for two years at the Hartford, until she moved to the Dundas Manor in Winchester, in August of 2011.   

Elva is survived by her children Ray (Charlene) Baker of Morrisburg, Dale (Sylvia) Baker of Gananoque, Debbie Helmer (Bill Renshaw) of  Morrisburg, and Dennis Baker (Fran Guindon) of Morrisburg. 

She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Joanne (Brian) Carolen, Sean (Beth) Baker, Angie (Dan) Hamilton, Laurie (Martin) Kuchirka, Jamie (Shelley) Helmer, Penny (Dave) Powell, Gerald (Donna) Baker, Kathy Fernetich (Dave Redmond), Larry Baker (Jamie Murry) and by her great-grandchildren Lexi, Ryan, Matthew, Zachary, Robin, Sierra, Kai, Stefanie, Bradley, Amanda, Taylor, Paige, Jade, Dawson, Jarred, Marissa and Ethan.

She is also survived by nieces and nephews.   

Elva was predeceased by her brother Arnold DeClare, her daughter-in-law Margaret Baker and her son-in-law Bill Helmer.   

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. A Legion Ladies Auxiliary Service was held on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.  

Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Friday, November 11th at 3 p.m., with Rev. Arlyce Schiebout officiating.  

Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery, Mariatown.  Pallbearers were grandchildren Sean Baker, Angie Hamilton, Laurie Kuchirka, Jamie Helmer, Penny Powers and Larry Baker.  

 Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

George Baker, a longtime resident of Morrisburg, passed away peacefully at Dundas Manor, Winchester on Wednesday, May 23, 2012. He was in his 96th year.  

George was born on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory outside Belleville and shared early life with a sister Mary and a brother Jack. On the death of their mother, they were adopted by separate families and were reunited later in life. 

George was adopted by William Samuel Baker and Ethel Mae (nee Browe) Baker in the Aultsville area.  

It was there he met and married Violet Shaver on April 8, 1948, in Williamsburg.  George and Violet loved each other dearly and spent little time apart.  They were very supportive parents to sons Ken and Garth and his family. 

Although tough times in the 30’s made it impossible for George to continue in school, he had the personal drive to become a self educated man.  He did well under the tutoring of Violet, first to get his license and later to take the examination to become a TV repairman.  George worked at RCA in Prescott and with hydro during the construction of the Seaway.  Even in retirement he pumped gas at the garage.  

George was an agile athletic person who loved to tell stories of how he played hockey with Sears catalogues for knee pads.  He enjoyed fishing, playing darts and bowling.  His trophy case was filled with recognition of these achievements.  

Remaining active in later years, he and Violet played shuffleboard and organized the competition for the Ontario Senior Games when they were held in Morrisburg.  

George was a member of Lakeshore Drive United Church.  Those who knew George would remark about his sense of humour, his light heartedness and that twinkle and wave.  He cared deeply for his family, worked hard and enjoyed the simple, most precious aspects of life.

George was predeceased by his wife Violet (Shaver) Baker (2010). He leaves to mourn his sons Ken of Cornwall and Garth (Faye) of Morrisburg, his grandchild Jennifer (Mark Elson) Baker of Pickering and his great-grandchild Benjamin Collins of Pickering.  He was predeceased by his sister Mary Wood and brother Jack Flewell. 

Friends were received at the Parker Funeral Home, in Morrisburg on Friday May 25, 2012. The funeral service was held in the chapel. 

Pallbearers were Wayne Hutt, Dale Hutt, Mark Elson, Ricky Shaver, Randy Shaver and Brad Shaver.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Mariatown.  Memorial donations to Winchester Hospital would be gratefully acknowledged.  Condolences and donations may be made at www.parkerofmorrisburg.com
