A lifetime resident of Morrisburg, Kathy Black passed away at the Central West Hospice in Ottawa, on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 56.
Her parents, Irene Elizabeth Sypes and Lyle Wilburn Black were married in June of 1957. Two years later on January 11, 1959, Katherine Elizabeth was born. Kathy was the first child and the only girl in the family. Kathy’s brother, Allan came along two years later, and four years after that was the arrival of the blonde haired twins (Donald and David), which surprised everyone.
The Black household was a busy place – for many years. Kathy spent countless nights sharing the television with her brothers, watching Hockey Night in Canada, eating popcorn, and joining in on family sing-alongs.
Hay Bay was the destination of many of Kathy’s weekends and many memories were built around this family time. As a child Kathy looked forward to heading out on cottage weekends with relatives and this passion continued into her teenage years when she spent her time there with boyfriends and girlfriends.
As an adolescent, Kathy was very social. She didn’t like to miss out on fun or a good time. Most of her life however was spent close to Morrisburg which is where her heart was – close to her long-time friends. Kathy’s two passions in life were Jenna, and her mother Irene. They were the world to her.
As Kathy got older it became more apparent that she simply appreciated the uncomplicated joys in life. Kathy liked to have fun however, the predominant side of Kathy was that of an unassuming, private woman, and someone you could trust. Kathy had strong principals that she believed in, and lived by.
“Content” is a word that describes Kathy well. She knew what was important to her, and that was her family, her daughter Jenna first and foremost. Luxury to her was having Jenna around her. Kathy looked forward to the simplicity of the two of them eating together at East Side Marios, or getting take-out Chinese food from Prescott.
Kathy loved nothing more than to sit and relax in the comfort of her living room, and watch both “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune”.
Kathy has always been known for her strong work ethic, following closely in both her mother and father’s footsteps. She worked hard all her life; whether at Black Lumber, The Plaza-Deli, McIntosh Inn, and lastly Tim Horton’s.
Her most cherished job however was raising her daughter Jenna, who just celebrated her 28th birthday on Friday.
Since Kathy’s diagnosis in June of 2014, she made a big impression on the nurses, doctors and home care personal that treated her, amazing them and her family with her strength and courage. Kathy never lost her positive outlook and she carried with her an unfaltering “I won’t back down” attitude.
Kathy is survived by her mother Irene Black, her daughter Jenna, her brothers Allan (Heather), Donald (Nancy) and David, all of Morrisburg and her niece and nephews Joshua, Riley, Oakley, Sam and Andi Black. She is also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her father Lyle Black.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on Sunday, July 12th from 1 p.m. until time of the Memorial Service at 4 p.m. which was conducted by Rev. Janet Evans. A luncheon followed at the Morrisburg Legion.
Interment of cremated remains was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Morrisburg. Pallbearers were Jenna Crump, Allan Black, Donald Black and David Black.
