OPG Drops Off Gift to Figure Skaters and Minor Hockey

The South Dundas “River Rats Treasures” Novice B Lions capped off a winning weekend by downing the Kemptville Panthers 3-2 here Sunday, after winning the “B” Championship at a Gananoque tournament on Saturday.

The Lions participated in a 10 team, Novice tournament on Saturday, in Gananoque, and made it to the “B” final against their division rival Brockville #2 Braves. 

The Lions jumped on their opportunities in the first few minutes of the game grabbing a 3-0 lead on goals by Kayne McCadden and Ben Lapier.

 Kolby Latulippe sent McCadden away twice on right wing breakaways, and both times be beat the goalie over the glove to the top corner. 

Ben Lapier followed that up with a rush of his own and scored to give the Lions a 3-0 lead three minutes into the game.

In the second period, the Lions got into some penalty troubles and on back to back power plays, Brockville’s Rhys Gibbons was able to beat Lions goalie Brendan Shaver to cut the lead to 3-2.

After another Brockville rush, Lion’s defensemen Emytt Fetterly made a clearing pass to Joshua Broad who beat the Braves defensemen and made a short pass to Ben Lapier who broke in on the Braves goalie and netted his second of the game.

The Braves responded with another Gibbons goal to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Lions Kayne McCadden put the game away with 1:37 left netting his third to give the Lion’s the “B” Championship.

The Lion’s  missed out on making it to the “A” final by just three goals in round robin play. 

In their opening game, they came up against a really good team in Port Hope, and they needed outstanding goaltending from Brendan Shaver to give them a chance to squeak out a 2-2 tie.

With Shaver on the bench for an extra attacker, Kayne McCadden intercepted a Port Hope clearing pass and quickly moved the puck to Ben Lapier who scored the tying goal with 27 second left. Lapier had scored earlier off a scramble with Joshua Broad providing the assist.

In their other round robin game, the Lion defeated a Kingston Novice Select Team, 9-2. Early on it was a battle just to get a lead as Kingston grabbed a 2-1 advantage, but the Lions would not be denied, as they battled hard to the win. 

Scoring highlights: Nolan Henry with one goal and two assists and Joshua Broad with five assists; Kayne McCadden had two goals and assists went to all the defense crew-Spencer Barclay, Trent Rae, Cassidy Bilmer and Emytt Fetterly; Ben Lapier was the offensive machine with six goals.

In league play Sunday afternoon, the Lions battled the west Division Leading Kemptville #3 Panthers and needed a third period goal from Kolby Latulippe to break up the 2-2 tie for a 3-2 win. 

The Panthers pressed in the final minute with their goalie on the bench for an extra attacker and the Lion’s killing a penalty, but they were unable to get a shot through to the net.

The Lions had the lead twice at 1-0 and 2-1 on goals by Ben Lapier, the first assisted by Owen Fetterly.

In the second period, Broad who was fore checking on the left wing got the puck and made a pass to Lapier near the goal line. Lapier attempted a pass to Fetterly in the slot, but the puck deflected off two Panther players into their own net.

With the game tied at two, McCadden grabbed a loose puck near the Panthers blue line and circled into the slot where he let a wrist shot go that was saved. However, Kolby Latulippe was “johnny on the spot” to knock the rebound into the net.

The South Dundas “River Rats Treasures” Novice B Lions next home game is Sunday, November 27th at 1 p.m. Local hockey fans are invited to come out and cheer on the Lions.

Ten athletes from a team of 60 that represented District 8 at the Ontario Summer Senior Games in Brampton, August 15-16, returned home bearing medals and among them was Morrisburg golfer Monique Patenaude.

Patenaude collected a silver medal in the ladies A flight division with a 36 hole net score of 160.

On the opening day the 21 handicapper shot a 103 for an 82 net and on the second round she posted a 99 (78 net) on what she described as a “very beautiful, but very difficult Masters course at the Lion Head Golf and Country Club.

The Masters Course plays to 5,392 yards from the ladies red tees and its difficulty is indicated through its slope rating of 131.

“It was probably one of the nicest courses I have ever played,” said  Patenaude who, as an avid golfer, has played her share of courses, and “probably one of the hardest courses I have ever played.”

“There were a lot of bunkers and long rough. On most holes, from 130 yards in, you had to carry rough or sand traps. That’s why I found it so difficult. I am not a long ball hitter.”

Patenaude said that generally the scores were high for both the men’s and women’s field.

The women’s A flight win went in a 36 hole net score of 150 (a pair of 75 nets) to Loretta Czernis.

While Patenaude was working her way to the A flight silver medal, Cedar Glen golfer, Elise Muir of Long Sault claimed a gold medal in B flight.

With that win Muir qualified for the Summer Nationals coming up in 2014.

Patenaude and Muir began their journey to the provincial championship  in a qualifier organized by Ann Cook at Cedar Glen.

“We had about 50 or so players for the District 8 qualifier,” said Patenaude who with husband Andy, has now joined the Senior Games board of directors for this area. District 8 covers Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Prescott-Russell and Akwesasne. 

The qualifier included A and B flights and a Calloway scored division.

In A flight, Patenaude won gold with a 90, Lynn Shaw was second and Susan McIntosh scored a Bronze Medal. Shaw and McIntosh are both  Cedar Glen members.

Muir won B flight and Lise Steinburg (Morrisburg) was the Callaway winner.

The winners in each category advanced to the provincial although Steinburg was unable to attend and was replaced by silver medallist Pam McTear.

Patenaude has been competing in the seniors games (golf) for several years and says it is a wonderful experience.  The games are always well run and you meet a lot of people.

“I recommend getting involved in the games to anybody,” says Patenaude.

In order to participate athletes must pay a $12 yearly membership fee and that covers both summer and winter events.

In addition to golf, summer events include bid euchre, bocce, bowling, contract bridge, cribbage, cycling, darts, shuffleboard, lawn bowling, pickleball, slo-pitch, swimming, tennis and walking. Some events use prediction times.

Other District 8 medallists were Beverley Ray and Jackie Merpaw of Cornwall-gold in Cribbage; Susan Kersley (65 plus) and Donna Magher (55 plus) both of Williamstown-bronze medals in swimming; Murray MacLeod and Michel Cadieux of Cornwall -bronze in men’s 55 plus pickleball doubles; and Linda and Graham Vickers of Alexandria who won silver and bronze respectively in 55 plus prediction cycling.

With the summer games now over, the local executive of the Ontario Senior Games Association is busy making plans for the upcoming winter games. Gold medal winners in the local games will qualify to go to Huntsville in February for the Ontario 55 plus Winter Games (previously Winterfest).

The local senior games committee is also planning to host the Eastern Ontario Regional Games next August when over 600 competitors from Eastern Ontario will take part in 15 different events.

Prescott golfer, Bruce Perrin put up a one under par 71 on the Iroquois golf course, Saturday to easily win the 2014 Men’s Open Tournament in a field of 56 competitors.

For the tournament, the players played the back holes 10 through 18 first, and then moved over onto the course’s front nine holes to finish it off.

Perrin played the course’s front nine holes at one under par 36, and was even on the back nine with a 35 for his 71.

Next up was Kevin Duvall who plays out of the Morrisburg Golf Club. Duvall was right on Perrin’s heels with a 75 (38-37) which gave him the low net in A flight with a 64.

Despite the high wind of the day, some solid scores were turned in with nine of the 17 A flight players breaking the 80 barrier.

Iroquois club member, Les Gilmour carded a strong 76 to finish third overall, and then with 77s were Matt O’Neil  of Morrisburg, Shawn Lapier of Iroquois and Kevin`Byrd of Prescott.

Lance LePage of Morrisburg shot a 78, and Troy Gilmour of Grafton and Brent Mattice of Iroquois tied with 79s.

Rob Kimmerly, the defending 2013 champion, came in with an 81.

In B flight, it was Jamie Pederson who took charge with a very solid 78. He posted a 40 on the front nine and added a 38 on the back for his winning B flight total.

Next up were Bill Blad of Greely and Bob Mann of Morrisburg with 81s. David Cassell of Prescott, Pete Zeran of Upper Canada and Liam Morrow of Cedar Glen in Williamsburg  all posted 82s. Cassell’s 82 gave him the low net score with a 68.

Finishing off the top B flight players were Richard Guthro from Upper Canada with an 83, and  Chris Barkley of  Iroquois and Jordi MacDonald of Upper Canada tied with 84s. 

Upper Canada’s Sam Laurin and Iroquois’ Kent Smith finished the day tied with 82s. With Smith not available for a playoff, Laurin got the nod for the flight’s top spot and Smith had C flight low net with a 66.

Eldon Horner (no club affiliation) and Mike Hlurchuk were next up with 88s and Mike Laurin of Upper Canada was carded an 89.

Lorey Blad of Prescott and Don Poland of Iroquois tied with 90s.
